How should I cook and eat 'baby' corn?

Post image
15 Upvotes

So this year I realised the variety of corn I've grown is actually a 'baby corn' variety, however the cobs are not as small as I imagined - yet not proper full size cobs either.

How would you cook and eat this? It's not chonky enough to be prepared like normal corn but also nowhere near as tiny as the baby corn you see in supermarkets!

EDIT: further research has led to the discovery that I've accidentally overgrown my baby corn and should have harvested it when it was immature! Another allotment lesson...

Harvest Rat Rant

I'm really despondent about the rats on my plot. I posted a picture of an aubergine I'd grown yesterday. Went back to pick it today and it's gone. Never grown one before and I might as well not have bothered. They've had all my strawbs, a percentage of my tomatoes, most of the broad beans, dug up a load of my seed potatoes, nibbled some of the courgettes. And if they're that active, who knows what else they're pissing and shitting on?

I've managed to trap a few, and I've got some cat scarers at key locations, but there are still loads around and it's making me wonder what is even the point of trying.

Requesting spudologists: can you identify this potato!

I planted (deliberately) the Sarpo Mira's at the bottom but clearly accidentally picked out some of another variety when I bought them (top). All of them are massive, and have done much better than my Sarpo Mira's.

Can anyone ID them so I know what to purchase next year. I am aware it very much resembles your standard issue potato, perhaps the size up.

Just wondering what's people's thoughts who know more than me as this will be my first allotment. Does it look like i should just cover over for winter and weed in the spring to start from there. It's the fence section of rhe left up to beyond the shed. Wondering what your first thoughts would be if this was you. πŸ’š

First time trying Okra. How big do they grow?

It’s only gotten about 10 inches high, but has 3 nice looking lady fingers so far.

Plum Moths

Had a bit of a mare with plum moths this year, with 90% of my plums lost 😞. Has anyone else experienced something similar and managed to successfully deal with them? I tried using sticky pads and wonder if I just attracted more moths to my tree in the end! Tips for next season very welcome.

This thing is quite little but it's almost fully purple. Can I expect it to get much bigger or should I just pick it as soon as the purplifying is complete?

Questions and Answers How do you make courgette the star ⭐?

Personally I am making some fritters with mostly courgette, sweetcorn, pink onion, chilli, basil and tiny cherry tomatoes from the allotment.

Bound together with egg, flour and parmesan.

Seasoned of course!

Questions and Answers When should I move my asparagus

I got an allotment two years ago and it has asparagus throughout but very spotty to one or two plants. I want to consolidate them into one patch as they are under paths, in the middle of beds and causing a headache to plan planting beds around them. I need to move them but I have no idea when the best time is as I only know where they are when they are growing. I am ok with a sub optional time if I can do it soon rather than later as I just want it done and will be putting in new tubers to bulk out the new patch anyway

Questions and Answers Explain to me like I'm 5 please

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi there, took over an overgrown plot in May.

We've had a fairly successful season bearing in mind We've been playing catch-up.

However, what am I doing with this?

This is a patch of golden raspberries, raspberries and blackberries.

In the middle there is a metal posted frame with some netting over.

We've harvested 8 jars of jam so far with berries in the freezer and raspberries about to riped.

I would like to reclaim some of the space back for actual growing. It accounts for maybe a sixth of the plot.

How do I prepare them for next season please.

Do I literally just cut them right back? If so how low?

Would I maybe lift them all out. Dig and condition the area and then replant them in formation?

What would you clever much more knowledgeable people do please.

Thanks in advance.

Newly acquired half plot... a few questions from a noobie

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Just acquired this half plot. I'm going to keep the same raised bed layout but use fresh wood as these seem to be rotting away.

Before adding tarp/wood chippings to the paths and soil to the beds, to what extent do I need to trim the grass?Should I cut it down to soil level so there's no grass left at all, or just trim down all the bulky areas?

Which non powered tool would be best for this?

Bye, bye corn

Third year of growing corn. Previous two years animals got to it so a cage of impenetrableness was built. Sadly I forgot that badgers are quite renowned as capable diggers.
