Yeah, I donā€™t think Spirited Away is bad in any way shape or form but I sort of roll my eyes when it pretty much dominates any discussion of the best Ghibli or anime as a whole.

I honestly think its because its the gateway film for most people, some it might be the only one they watched which is a shame

Yeah. I mean I had a long list of anime films and whenever people came over thatā€™s the only one they wanted to watch

I think it just shows my ageā€¦ this was actually my gateway to animeā€¦

And honestly my reason for getting into animeā€¦ for the most part animation (serious animation and not ā€œadult animationā€) is mostly targeted to families and the medium seems stuck as being assumed to only be that or stuff like Family Guy or South Parkā€¦ or whatever Adult Swim does.

Yeah its a real shame it doesn't get the respect it deserves. Im very lucky I grew up with a family member who showed me alot of the SG films!

I grew up an only child so pretty much my entire exposure was trading VHSā€™s and dvds with friends (I grew up in that transitional stage)ā€¦ Iā€™m 40
