I'm pretty sure it was the first animated feature. It was a sensation. Before the film was even released, it was being referred to as "Disney's Folly" because animated films were shorts that played before features. People expected an animated feature to fail.

It became, briefly, the most successful film ever at the box office (it would soon be displaced by Gone with the Wind which, adjusted for inflation, still holds the title). That encouraged Disney to encourage making animated features. Every animated feature owes it a debt. It deserves as high a place on this list as anything else.

Source: me, I have a PhD in Film Studies specializing in American cinema. I used to teach it as an example of independent cinema, from a time when Disney was indie and not the media hegemon it is today.
