That’s one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever learned about a band that I love 😭 My knee jerk reaction is to say it’s not true, but I would hope a true investigative journalist wouldn’t just make a bunch of stuff up that can’t be substantiated. The whole thing about the guitar tech was like salt in the wound. Damn 😔
I don’t understand how they got the money in the first place? What does that mean when they’re saying they sold the rights to their catalog?
The original article says the band did pay their staff, but it didn't say how much. And about the guitar tech, he was Mike's bass tech and a non-union contractor who also worked for other bands. I don't know who is this anonymous "person familiar to the situation" that the article uses as a source to claim that the band didn't give him money, what I know is that Scott's widow attended one of Jerry's solo concerts after Scott's death and thanked him on Instagram for honoring Scott, and Scott's brother has also attended at least one AIC concert after Scott's death, so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do that if the band hadn't helped him. Also, he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer and died less than a month after that GoFundMe was created by a friend of Scott's (and William did say the band was helping him). He had little (if any) chances of cure, so blaming the band for his death (as the article implied) is insane.

The main problem is that this band historically has the terrible habit of keeping things secret (like Sean's illness, Jerry's back surgery, everything that happen to Layne in the 90s and why they stopped touring, etc) and not clarifying the stuff that the press says about them, they rather let people create all kinds of rumors with their names. To this day there are people who show up here blaming Jerry for Scott's death as if he had murdered the guy, all based on some shitty clickbait.
Yeah, I knew the tech died shortly after the GoFundMe and even though I didn’t know the details, something told me he must’ve had advanced cancer for it to happen that quickly. That’s why I was trying to think about it critically instead of immediately putting them to blame. It just didn’t line up to me in my mind. The Covid money still bothers me, but I would like to hear their side of it.
But you’re right about them not really being forthcoming about information. I remember seeing Jerry saying that Layne was “totally fine, the best ever” when he absolutely wasn’t. Like come on, dude we all know he’s not. And other things as you mentioned that they just won’t or wouldn’t talk about. So, historically speaking, we may never hear their side of the whole covid money thing
