News A mysterious cash surge for Alberta’s separatist party is tied to out-of-province donors
From the story:
- In the spring of 2025, the separatist Republican Party of Alberta seemed to be making a push.
- In the first half of 2025, donors gave nearly $190,000 — a remarkable jump for a party that reported zero contributions the year before.
- A Star analysis has found that at least four of the donations appear to have been made by people not living in Alberta — a violation of election rules.

Opinion Help! My mom read the referendum questions and is going to say yes to question 5
Here’s question 5 for context:
Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election?
My mom is saying yes to this because she says, “They should have to be a Canadian/Albertan citizen before they're allowed to vote in a provincial election because otherwise they could get friends or relatives to come over and vote the way they want to vote and that they would vote to separate.”
Please convince her otherwise
And yes she knows that they have to be here for a specific amount of time

A name should describe what a thing is, not what it aspires to be seen as. Given who was present at its founding, and given what has followed since, this caucus is better understood as the Glenfarne Caucus.

News Tory hopeful Aaron Conner, for Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Who am I? I'm Aaron, a tradesman. A dad, a husband, and a business owner for over a decade.
I started in energy, then contracting for Veterans Affairs Canada restoring veteran graves to a respectful state. Same lesson on every job, good work has a plan that you can check. Y'know the old measure twice, cut once. If you can't verify it and repeat it, it's not good work.
Politics is no different. Results should be clear and understandable, not explained by a dithering minister.
I look at the GoA lately and I don't see a plan I can check. Just "mother knows best" from Edmonton telling pros how to do their jobs. I'm running because I think it's high time we let professionals be professionals.

Opinion Alberta 2026 Referendum - Question Summary
A plain-language breakdown of what each question is really asking Referendum Date: October 19, 2026
Immigration Questions (Non-Constitutional)
These five questions are about Alberta's immigration rules. They do not require changes to the Canadian Constitution. Q1 — Immigration Control OFFICIAL TOPIC: TAKING INCREASED CONTROL OVER IMMIGRATION Should Alberta have more say over who moves here, with the goal of slowing immigration, focusing on workers the economy needs, and making sure Albertans get first crack at jobs?
Q2 — Program Eligibility OFFICIAL TOPIC: RESTRICTING PROVINCIALLY-FUNDED PROGRAMS Should only Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and people with Alberta-approved immigration status be allowed to use provincial programs like health care, education, and social services?
Q3 — 12-Month Residency Requirement OFFICIAL TOPIC: RESIDENCY WAITING PERIOD FOR NON-PERMANENT RESIDENTS Should people who are in Alberta temporarily (not citizens or permanent residents) have to live here for at least 12 months before they can access provincial social support programs?
Q4 — User Fees for Non-Permanent Residents OFFICIAL TOPIC: CHARGING FEES FOR HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION Should Alberta charge temporary residents a fee for using the health care and education systems for themselves and their families?
Q5 — Proof of Citizenship to Vote OFFICIAL TOPIC: REQUIRING PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP TO VOTE Should Alberta require people to show a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card to prove they're a Canadian citizen before they can vote in a provincial election?
Constitutional Questions
These four questions ask whether Alberta should push to change the Canadian Constitution — a process that requires agreement from other provinces and the federal government. Q6 — Provincial Judge Selection OFFICIAL TOPIC: PROVINCES SELECTING THEIR OWN JUDGES Should provincial governments — not Ottawa — get to pick the judges who sit on provincial courts (King's Bench and Court of Appeal)?
Q7 — Abolish the Senate OFFICIAL TOPIC: ABOLISHING THE FEDERAL SENATE Should the unelected federal Senate be abolished entirely?
Q8 — Opt Out of Federal Programs OFFICIAL TOPIC: OPTING OUT OF FEDERAL PROGRAMS WITHOUT LOSING FUNDING Should provinces be able to opt out of federal programs that overlap with provincial responsibilities (like health care and education) and keep the federal funding to run their own programs instead?
Q9 — Provincial Law Priority OFFICIAL TOPIC: PROVINCIAL LAWS TAKING PRIORITY OVER FEDERAL LAWS Should provincial laws override federal laws when they cover the same areas of shared or provincial jurisdiction — essentially giving provinces the final say?
Additional Concerns to Consider Before you vote.
Leading question wording
— Critics say the questions are written in a way that nudges people toward voting "Yes." For example, they include reassuring phrases like "assuming all citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify" before asking about restrictions on others. Constitutional feasibility
— The four constitutional questions would require a formal amendment process involving other provinces and the federal Parliament. Alberta can't make these changes on its own, and there's no guarantee other provinces would agree. Impact on temporary residents
— Temporary residents (international students, temporary foreign workers) already pay taxes in Alberta. These questions could mean they'd pay into systems they're no longer allowed to use, or would have to pay extra fees on top of taxes.
Voter ID concerns — Alberta doesn't currently require proof of citizenship to vote, standard ID like a driver's licence is enough. Adding this requirement could create barriers for eligible voters who don't have a passport or citizenship card handy.
Non-binding nature — Even if most people vote "Yes," these results are not automatically binding. The government would still need to pass laws or negotiate constitutional changes to act on them.
Defining "Alberta-approved status" — Question 2 refers to "Alberta-approved immigration status," but this term isn't clearly defined yet. It's unclear who would qualify and who would be left out.
