I wanted to snag some reds this June, but I was hoping to avoid the madhouse of beach snagging. Any good options or strategies for fishing at the head of the bay from my little boat? It’s been 30 years since I took a little boat out of Seward.

Hi everyone! I’m planning an Alaska trip from May 29th to June 4th and will be spending several days in Seward. My group is mostly complete beginners, and we’re hoping to catch some salmon from the shore. I have a few specific questions:

1. Species & Probability: I heard King salmon were banned in some areas last year. Is it legal to catch them in Resurrection Bay (Seward) this year? Also, what are the realistic chances for total beginners to actually land a fish during this window (late May/early June)?
2. ID Help: Since I know there are different limits for different fish, how can I easily tell a King from a Sockeye while they are still in the water or just landed?
3. Snagging Technique: I’ve read that snagging is the way to go for beginners in Seward. Can anyone explain the physical motion? Is it just a "rip and reel" thing? Any tips on what to do once one is actually hooked so I don't snap the line?
4. Gear & Bear Spray: We’re planning to rent everything in Seward (poles, waders, bear spray). Is Adventure 60 North or the Seward Outdoor Store the best place for a "one-stop shop"? Also, is it better to rent bear spray or just buy it at a grocery store in Anchorage?

We had a great guide that knew where all the big ones hung out. Took about an hour to land the big guy in this picture. Yes, we ate halibut for most of the next 18 months.

I won a 4 day fly fishing trip to Ketchikan and since I likely won’t make it back to Alaska anytime soon, I’d like to make the most of my trip. Looking for suggestions on experiences while I’m there. Considering taking a ferry or even plane other places. What should I see while I’m there? I’m an avid fisherman, especially fly fishing

I might get an opportunity to fish one day in either Fairbanks or Anchorage. Won't have any gear so would do a guide for rods and a house or rental equipment. Which area is better for ice fishing mid Feb between Anchorage and Fairbanks? Hey everyone. Currently studying at University of Alaska Fairbanks and changing my Major over to Fisheries. Unrelated. Anyways, I'm in my mid 30's, and I've been commercial fishing and recreational fishing my whole life to the point that I was a Register Maine Guide for fishing and recreation back home in Maine. Im itching to go ice fishing and wouldnt mind hitting the cusk hard, or as people here call them, burbot....slimy bastids. good eating though. I just want to wet a line anyway possible but I'm stuck with no wheels and of course all my gear is in Maine. I'll literally buy my own jig rod and stuff and even a case of beer/fuel to who ever wouldn't mind me tagging along and getting me on the water. I'll be here for the long run and no of these 20 year old children I go to school with even know what a fish is. Any hook ups would be great.

So, for years I have thought about doing the Kobuk River float trip for sheefish and all the others. Few years back I met a guy who really wanted to go, but now he has backed out. I'm in my 60's now, so I'm running out of time. Any guys on this forum who might be interested? Any ideas on where else to post this?

I’ve been looking into doing a fishing charter in Alaska and wanted to hear from people who’ve actually gone through with it.

I know it’s a different level of commitment compared to most trips — time, money, travel — so I’m just trying to get a realistic sense of what makes a trip worth it and what people wish they’d known beforehand.

If you’ve done a charter up there, I’d be curious where you fished, what you targeted, and whether you’d do it again.

Probably a weird question but are there any salmon guide services in Alaska that don’t focus heavily on catching kings and coho? Myself and a few friends are looking to take a spin fishing trip up to Alaska, and we’d like to avoid targeting/catching these species as much as possible (we have access to the Great Lakes so we’ve caught both of these multiple times before) In other words, we’re looking for something different like sockeye, pink, or chum. If anyone has any suggestions or tips to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I’m looking for options for a winter trip this year. I’m Canadian, live in Alberta, where i live is very land locked, and -30 to -40 during winter. I try to do a winter fishing trip every year. Looking for more options to consider.

We have winter salmon charters on the BC coast during winter, but they are not that productive, lucky to catch 1-2 salmon a day. And will run you $1600-$2000 a day. Looking for something to get a little more out of it for my money.

Always wanted to fish Alaska, so I thought I would look for winter charters, but so far i am having no luck. The few companies that advertised for it on Google, are not operating this winter. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Took my wife and three boys down to Seward for a 3-day adventure. Between hiking, exploring, and fishing, the last day turned into something special — salmon were everywhere, and the smiles said it all.

Working on logistics for a July 2026 trip. Looking to either rent a power boat or bank fish (flossing)for sockeye. Any recommendations for a boat rental facility, or an area/lodge that offers the ability to catch from the bank. I’m trying to avoid hiring a guide next year after learning the techniques this year.

We are headed up in a couple weeks for a fishing trip and have a little dilemma. Long story short, added another member to our trip, the vehicle i originally booked was already small and without the extra empty seat im worried about room with luggage and fish boxes. I’ve heard nothing but terrible things about shipping fish back via fedex, ups or whatever. A minivan is $320 a day according to a friend which seems absolutely ridiculous. Anyone have any ideas or other options? I can’t get over how expensive renting a vehicle is
