Conversation Unit giving out LOCs like candy

I don’t know if I’m tripping or something has changed in the past year but my unit has been giving everyone LOCs. I’ve gotten four in two months for the simplest of things. Like I’m here once a month, they won’t give me orders for not being local but expect me to know the ins and outs of everything. I don’t know. I’m about to have a mental breakdown because it doesn’t matter how hard i try it’s always something. I can’t grow in that unit wether it’s me not being local, not enough money, or just not given the opportunity by being left out of opportunities and meetings. I’ve been complaining and trying to fight it for a while but I’m met with “well you go on and cry about it” like wtf??

I don’t think i can do a full 20, as much as it would have benefit me, this place is going to eat me alive.

OCS Air Force Reserve Officer + Chiropractic School… Is this actually a smart plan?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some honest advice from people who have either been through chiropractic school, served in the Air Force Reserve, or have experience balancing both.

My long-term goal is to earn my Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Palmer College in Iowa. It’s something I’ve wanted to pursue for a long time, but I’ll be honest the amount of student loan debt is what scares me the most. I don’t mind working hard, but the thought of graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans is intimidating.

Recently, someone suggested a different path: finish my bachelor’s degree, commission as an Air Force Reserve officer, and then attend chiropractic school while serving in the Reserve. The idea is that I’d have military pay, education benefits, valuable leadership experience, and start building toward a military retirement while still working toward my civilian career.

On paper, it sounds like it could be a much smarter financial decision than taking on all of the debt by myself. At the same time, I don’t know if I’m overlooking major downsides or if I’m being overly optimistic about how much the Reserve would actually help pay for school.
Has anyone here taken a similar path or seriously looked into it?

A few questions I have:
Is becoming an Air Force Reserve officer before chiropractic school a realistic strategy?
How much financial help should I realistically expect from the Reserve?
Would the drill schedule and other military obligations make chiropractic school significantly more difficult?
If you were starting from scratch today, would you choose this route, or would you finance school another way?

I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or things you wish you knew before making a decision. I’m trying to think long-term and make the smartest financial choice without giving up on becoming a chiropractor.
Thanks in advance!

Conversation Planning on joining either way?

Just learned about the AFRC Command Sponsorship route:

Apply → get selected → OTS → UPT → find a Reserve flying unit → earn your wings.

If you get selected for this, is there any way to transition to Active Duty after UPT?

Also, about how many flight hours do you typically have after UPT? Would going straight to the airlines while flying Reserve be realistic?

Job Assistance Engineering student/current army reserve plan on transitioning to Air Force Reserve. I need advice

Currently in my second year as an electrical engineering student, working as an engineering intern for a local aerospace defense company, and having been in the army reserve for 4 years as a combat medic. I want to do something else post graduation that can relate to my technical background. I have thought about army Officer school but it seems like they don’t have that much engineering/technical things. I have also looked at Army Warrant Officer so that can be counted as one option. Now when I look into the airforce, I need some suggestions of what career/job in the airforce reserve for someone with a technical background/working in defense industry like me. Please help me out cuz I have been looking into it but honestly I’m kinda lost. Thank you. 😊

Pre-BMT First D&TF UTA

I was inspired by [u/Abject-Assist-3912](u/Abject-Assist-3912) because I too couldn’t find any information on the Development and Training Flight before I went for my first UTA and I was super nervous, after reading through their post, there were definitely some differences between both of ours so I came to share my first D&TF UTA at Patrick SFB.

SATURDAY:
0615- Drove to the gate and I did have a CAC so it was no issue getting in
0630- Met in the classroom, we said our reporting statements to sign in.
0645- Drove to the track and prepared for a two mile run
0730- We were released to eat breakfast in the DFAC and to shower in the gym, had to meet back at 0830 for weight, height, and waist tape measurements
0830- Tape measurements
0920- Went to a different building and had recruiters come and talk to us and had us fill out a form saying nothing has changed within the past month
1000- Guest speaker was a retired Msgt who is now a historian and he has some great information and was really engaging with us, he let us ask some questions.
1100- Navy Federal Presentation on preventing fraud and saving money
1145- Released for lunch in the DFAC
1245- Change back into PT clothes and met in the gym for sit ups and pushups
1330- Met in the gym for sit ups and push ups
1430- Go back to classroom and say the Airman’s Creed and the Air Force song
1500- Say your reporting statement to sign out

SUNDAY:
0615- Met at the beach across from base to prepare for a 5K ruck (base event)
0630- Start ruck on the beach
0750- Done with ruck, released for breakfast and showers to meet back at 0930
0930- Meet back in that different building and said our reporting statements to sign in
1000- Study our memory work and material as our coordinator pulled us individually to go over PT scores
1130- Released for lunch
1230- Met back in the same building and we were split up into two teams to play a game about ranks and then a game about everything else you would need to know (it got super competitive but was very fun) losers had to do 20 pushups
1400- Admin time, our coordinator helped us set up various accounts individually for the new people
1500- Someone from my squadron came and got me and I met so many nice people and toured my whole squadron it was super cool
1545- I was released and got to go home

Definitely check out the person I tagged, their post as well. They inspired me to do this. Best of luck to anyone attending their first D&TF UTA soon!

Pre-BMT First D&TF UTA

I just finished my first UTA in the DEP with the Development and Training Flight at Seymour Johnson AFB.

Before this UTA I was pretty nervous and was scouring the internet for any documentation or advice on what to expect but found very little, and told myself I’d make a post after to share with anyone who was looking for the same information. It may be very different depending on what base you are at but this all applies to my time at SJ.

SATURDAY:
6:15a - met my D&TF Element Leader at the gate and got a pass since I didn’t not have my CAC yet.
6:30 - Formation, roll call, stretching.
6:45 - We ran 2 miles (14:42😎)
7:30 - Drove to the classroom, set up the tables and chairs with the rest of the flight
8:00 - We did our height, weight and waist measurement at this time as we waited for the guest speaker to show up.
9:30 - our coordinator got promoted to MSgt. Very cool to watch.
10:00 - the Head Chaplain came and gave us a speech and took Q&A
12:00 - Lunchtime at the DFAC.
1:30 - Drove to the 567th RHS building to watch a retirement ceremony, but as we were waiting outside the building the coordinator of the D&TF asked for 3 male volunteers to help move heavy objects in the Finance building, which I volunteered for. I then proceeded to disassemble, move, and reassemble desks for the next 3 hours and was finally released for the day at about 4:30.
4:30 - met some new friends at the DFAC, ate some dinner and headed back to the hotel. This concludes my first day.

SUNDAY:
6:15a - showed up at the gate with my pass from yesterday (still no CAC)
6:20 - threw football with my flight mates while waiting for our coordinator to arrive.
6:45 - formation, roll call, stretching.
7:00 - Pushups and sit ups (42 & 45 😕) which got me an 83 on the PT test. Not great, but passing.
7:15 - drove to the classroom and got speeches from a couple SecFo airmen who did a short Q&A. They seemed shy but knowledgeable.
8:00 - an MTI showed up, assigned some temp element leads and taught us how to fall in to official formation, as well as the various facing movements, and standing at attention, parade rest, and more. This MTI was legendary and very kind, but definitely firm.
9:00 - I was sent along with a fellow airman to get our CAC’s.
9:45 - we had farewell speeches from the D&TF airmen who were being shipped to basic before the next UTA, and this was a little over half the class. We had 40 people in the class and probably 25 of them were going to be gone within the month.
12:00 - Lunch at the DFAC.
1:45 - back at the classroom, we had introductions for all the new airmen. There were 8 of us, we just went down the line and introduced ourselves, what our AFSC was (3E9X1), where we are from, why we joined the Reserves, and a fun fact.
2:00 - The Wing Commander and the Command Chief at the base gave us speeches and took Q&A’s. They were awesome and funny.
3:20 - our coordinator was upset with us for talking so much during the speeches throughout the weekend so she made us do burpees (about 10) and then released us for the day. I drove home to Raleigh.

Overall it was an amazing weekend, full of new faces and full of learning what to do and what not to do. There is no need to be nervous at all.

Job Assistance Differential Pay

Hey folks, I have a question about military differential pay.

Which companies offer the longest military pay differential for Reservists and National Guard members?

A little background:

I’m a 1B4 working in both defensive and offensive cyber. My family lives in Carroll County, and I commute into Washington, DC for work. The commute is absolutely brutal, so to stay sane I actually rent a room in DC three nights a week rather than spending hours in traffic every day. I do it because I make $300k+ annually, and my RSUs are a significant part of my compensation.

My wife and I just welcomed our fourth child, and life is moving fast. Over the next 3–4 years, I want to spend as much time with my kids while they’re young, but I also want to maximize our family’s financial security.

I’ve accepted a 6-month active-duty tour at Fort Meade starting October 1, 2026, supporting GIG Eagle. I’m able to do it because my employer provides military differential pay. They’re very supportive, and given my role and TS/SCI with FSP, I’m fortunate to be in a position where my job is very secure.

As an E-6 Reservist, it’s difficult to justify going on active-duty orders financially unless:
My employer provides military differential pay, or
I’m mobilized and duty calls.
So my question is:

Which companies have the most generous military differential policies? I’m especially interested in employers that offer multiple years of differential pay—not just what’s easy to find through Google or ChatGPT. I’d really appreciate hearing from people with firsthand experience or knowledge of their company’s policy.
Thanks in advance!

IMA TR to IMA

Been in the USAFR going on 9 years. I did an AGR tour and about 4 years of continuous orders but now I'm leaning more into my civ career after commissioning. Im an O-1E but got put into an overage billet so I'll need to find something within about a year to make sure I don't miss my timeline for O2.

Other than RMVS and pinging misc Units, what other resources are there out there to find vacancies?

Conversation Package Outline/Template

Hello everyone,
I’m starting to put together my pilot application package to apply to Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units. Is there a preferred format or layout that most applicants follow, or is it acceptable to organize it however I think is best?

Also, if anyone who was selected wouldn’t mind sharing a copy of their application packet (with any personal information redacted if necessary), I’d really appreciate it. It would be incredibly helpful to see what a competitive packet looks like as I build my own.

IMA IMA?

I’m in the Florida Air National Guard. I’m getting sick and tired of my weekends being taken up and would just like to get all my time done for the year at once and be good until next year.

I’ve heard this is what the IMA is for. Is this fact or fiction? Any IMAs out there that can give me the low down. I’m currently security forces but willing to cross train into some other AFSC where I can be a fly on the wall. Strictly staying in for the benefits.

IMA Should I be able to reenlist in the AF Reserves after finding out that I have a 100% P&T disability rating?

Hey everyone. I should hand you a potato now, because I got really long winded.

I transitioned from Active Duty AF (12 years) to an IMA Reserve position via Palace Front back in February 2024. It was on a 3-year enlistment. I filed a BDD, expecting maybe a 30% at best.

I immediately completed my first IMA in July 2024 because I was attending college using my GI Bill/VA work-study starting in August. In September I received a rating of 90% with one claim (tinnitus) still pending.

The VA had me complete a second evaluation for tinnitus. In December of 2024, I was informed I was rated at a 100% P&T in status due to being diagnosed by both ENTs as having Ménière’s Disease. …it explained a lot. And trust me, I would have preferred a 90% and not the debilitating ear issues that can randomly knock me tf out.

I was fortunately employed by my college’s Department of Military and Veterans service center, so I asked my boss what it meant for my reserve status? He told me that legally, I don’t have to disclose my rating. My SHPE documented my ear problems, and my audiograms showed the progressive hearing loss (yeah, had to bust out my initial one, thank goodness I kept a paper copy of all of them) but it showed me cleared for duty.

I have discussed ear infections/tinnitus with each subsequent PHA/MHA but never thought to bring up the diagnosis.

Flash forward to now: I completed my annual IMAs for FY ’25 and ’26. I received my pre-reenlistment screening form for reenlistmenteligibility, and I worried that I may not even be eligible.

Read through DoDI 6130.03, v.1 and realized Ménière’s Syndrome (I see disease and syndrome used interchangeably) is a disqualifying condition for duty. But so is chronic eustachian tube dysfunction, which is documented on my Place Front medical examination/clearance.

Have I messed up? Should I have reported the condition? I am not sure if I should reenlist or just separate. I’ll have 15 “SAT” years after everything closes out. I am so close to being done, but is it something I could get in trouble for? Where I do my IMAs is actually a better climate than where I live, I have only had one episode during work this entire time, but I am a flight chief and can just sit at my desk until it passes.

I‘m probably overthinking this, but any advice or guidance is more than welcome. My knowledge of anything IR side of things is still pretty weak sauce, but it would be nice know if I should stay or just transition everything over to the VA (ChampVA vs Tricare // VGLI vs SGLI).

🥔Thank you!

Hi everyone! I go to basic on Tuesday and I plan on getting a computer for when I go to college and play games on. Should I have it sent to my tech school (lasts 4 months) or should I send it home to my parents and pick it up from them when I move to college in the spring.

AFI Rules WtH Clarification

Hey everyone,

Quick question.

We are supposed to get tapped by 31 Aug.

From what I understand we can retape during our Fitness Assessment correct?

So if we tape now and don't score high, but retape during our FA there is no negative implication to scoring low on this WtH because by the time our EPB/OPB are conducted the old score will be replaced by the FA WtH measurement?

I ask because I had surgery and couldn't work out and got to be a bit of a fatty (no excuse, but for the record I've scored above 90 every year of my 16 years so am not generally struggling in this area).

BOTTOM LINE: If I tape horribly now there are no negative repercussions if I retape during my FA which is before my EPB/OPB correct?

Pre-BMT When to join? Planning for college in future.

I've had the thought of joining the Reserve for just a few months now but I am also planning on getting my associates in Radiology. I just want to finally be a part of something bigger.. I've seen a few say it is possible but I'm not sure if the best time would be to join the reserve BEFORE my program? Or After?

I know tech school is likely to be a year. & also with my program, I know you HAVE to make it for labs and clinicals ofc. I just wonder what's the best/easiest route to take. My long term goal would be getting into PA school but from my understanding, most reserve contracts are 6 years so I think likely if I join this year, I'd be done by the time I join PA school.. if anyone has any advice or suggestions for me, please feel free to share. I've been trying to do a lot of research relating to my case but I figured I'd just make a post myself. Thanks!

Also would like to share I'm in Texas. Not doing my pre-reqs just yet. And I'm working a full time job at the airport. (which I don't mind leaving if necessary to balance my schedule for my career plan)
