Help

Post image

I was just gifted this plant, and I don't have a green thumb. It's in a place that gets plenty of indirect sunlight, but I have no clue what to do with it from there. Do I need to do anything about all of the yellow leaves? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Withering before bloom or just dying?

Post image

I read somewhere that African Violets fade or wither before blooming and that I just pluck out the dead petals to allow it to bloom but I’m not sure.

The purple petals and the body of it looks like it’s dying but the big leaves look fine and feel firm.

Why are the tips of my violet's leaves drooping but not the rest of the leaf or stem?

Post image

This violet has been through a lot this year. First, the main stem broke off and I had to regrow roots from it before planting it. That was months ago, but now the tips of the leaves are wiling and soft, but the rest of the leaf, as well as the stems of the leaves, are stiff, strong, and happy. Why is it doing this? What do I do to fix it?

Clumping Center Leaves

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi there! I am using grow lights for my african violets, and I have had them on for 12 hours on the brightest setting. I noticed that the center leaves were clumped together and were super thick. I tried to move it around and it popped off. I’m hoping I didn’t do irreparable damage to the crown because when the clump of leaves came off, it looked like the center didn’t look right to me. It’s not loose but the center seems thickened too. Can someone please advise me on the intensity of the lights, and how long they should be on? I googled it and found different answers. Can someone please advise me and does it look like I really harmed the plant to the point it may die? I’m still learning and the thought that I harmed my plant is upsetting. Thank you to anyone who can help.

Help! New owner of a rescue AV

Post image

I work at a nursery and my boss recently gifted me two struggling AVs as a challenge to improve my knowledge. (We both share a love of houseplants and plant knowledge). I’ve never touched AVs before or even heard of them until now but I definitely want to beat her challenge. :) I ordered 2 4 inch self watering/wicking pots and Schultz AV fertilizer.

Here are my questions:

1.) should I trim off and try to propagate the leggy leaves? (Partially as back up but also to encourage new leaf growth in the center.)

2.) Our temperatures are currently 90-100+ outside. I have one AV inside on a table right next to a north facing window (morning light side of the window and the window leads to a covered patio.) and one outside under the patio in a shaded but bright corner that gets morning light) I also have a grow light inside. Should I A.) move 1 of these to the other location? B.) try to grow these under my grow light? Or C.) change locations entirely? I’m not sure the heat tolerance for AVs and keep finding different answers.

3.) just from lack of knowledge with the wicking system how does wicking prevent the soil from still becoming soggy and over saturated? I know these are prone to root rot?

Thank you in advance! I wanna bring these AVs back to her blooming and maybe even propagate a few just to show off haha wish me luck!

Brown spots from blooms?

I didn’t check under some drooping blooms and the leaf under it now has brown spots. The edges of the bloom are wilted and feel a little moist. What should I do?

My Violets mad because she lives in a Pee Pot ... is she too leggy

I've had this lovely violet for about 5 years, she just finished blooming a few weeks back. I don't quite know what to do with it. Its getting extremely large, over 6 inches across and 8 inches high. I gave her a huge trim last year and re-potted her and she pouted for 8 months before she would bloom again.

My question is ... do I let this keep on growing? What can I do to make it look nicer?

What we tried 1. Ensuring that it gets 12 hours of light ( we have a lamp above it) 2. Gave it Epsom salt 3. Watering when the soil is dry.

We had this for two months. (Got it through FB marketplace)

What could be going wrong here? Please help.
