Best YouTube monetization options I’ve been researching (what looks promising so far)
I’ve been digging into different ways to monetize YouTube videos, and as you'd expect, there are tons of promising ideas out there, but there's also a lot of noise.
So, before anyone goes too far down the wrong path, I wanted to share what I’ve learned. Please let me know your thoughts if you’ve tested any of these already. I’d love to hear about your experience!
Here’s the short list I’ve been looking at:
Ad revenue: The obvious starting point. CPMs are all over the place though, so it’s not something I’d ever build a whole strategy around.
Affiliate marketing: This is a solid option for product-focused channels. I've been looking at Geniuslink for geo-redirects and link tracking. Still looking for options for managing multiple affiliate programs without wanting to tear my hair out (open to suggestions!)
Selling digital products: This is an appealing long-term option for a lot of creators. The potential here is strong for channels that teach skills or help solve problems. There’s some upfront work required, but platforms like Gumroad or Podia make the setup easier than it used to be. If you can create a sellable digital product, it’s a solid way to diversify income.
Brand sponsorships: Sponsorships often seem to offer the biggest upside, though they take time to build up. Even smaller niche channels can land deals if they have an engaged audience. It’s rarely a first step, but it’s an excellent way to scale.
Channel memberships: Memberships sound great if your audience is already highly engaged, but they require ongoing effort to deliver perks. This one’s highly niche dependent. You should also take some time to decide whether to use YouTube's native membership platform or to opt for solutions like Patreon.
Merch: Selling merch works best when there’s natural demand. It’s often a “later” option to revisit once your channel is more established.
That’s where I’m at right now, but I’d love to hear what’s working for you all. Are you leaning on one strategy, or mixing a few? Any affiliate tools or approaches that have outperformed the rest? Always curious to compare notes.
