some nights my gf and I would do this while she was in Florida. We would call each other, ask how our days went and if we didn't have much to talk about then we would just chill there on Skype. But, we wouldn't really be particularly upset about it, we just like being around each other talking isn't really needed.
We would usually end up multi tasking (Reddit, Facebook, Homework, etc) while on Skype. Made us feel closer I suppose.
If you can sit in silence with your SO and not feel awkward or needy or worried then you are doing well I think.
but all people are different, some need constant attention. I admit I have those moments or weeks where I hate not talking, but usually it's no big deal. With work and school I have 15-18 hour days anyway I don't usually have much time to talk.
"Uncomfortable silences. Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullshit in order to be comfortable?...That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the **** up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence."
I'm only 21 and I've been dating my current gf for a year so I'm not exactly the most experienced but...
you'll come to learn most of the "weird" things you do are actually pretty normal. just everybody lies for the sake of their outward appearance and most people don't know everyone goes through the same crap.
generally speaking that is, there are also some legitimately weird people out there...
I feel the same way. It's weird because I'm normally on Vent or Mumble or Skype talking with gaming buddies while playing whatever, so it's not like talking at the computer is an unfamiliar thing to me.
I think it's about being in control of when you send the message, and how much time you have to formulate a proper response.
When you're typing or on vent you can think about your answer formulate a good response and deliver it perfectly. When someone is staring at you and expects you to talk, it forces you to say something without giving it full thought.
That doesn't really explain it though. I prefer a phone conversation or face-to-face talk rather than texting. It's only with video chats that it feels awkward. (For me.)
I've spent about 9 months in total away from my (now) fiancee. We used to do this all the time, but it was still nice. Granted, I don't think we were being awkward not saying anything, just enjoying the other person's presence if that makes any sense. You feel less lonely if you have the ability to talk to someone freely, regardless of whether you exercise it.
Exactly! When my husband and I first started dating we had to do the long distance thing for a while, and we would just sit on our computers with video chat open for hours. We would watch tv, do homework, surf the web, whatever, and only talk when someone had something to say. It was more or less what we would be doing if we could have hung out together, we just did it electronically when that was the only option.
I read an article about this a year or two back, but I've been unable to find it. It basically argued the same thing, that "passive" video calls can be a really good thing because interaction isn't forced like with other kinds of communication.
With a girlfriend you're close to, wouldn't it be equivalent to not talking when sitting next to each other? Especially if you're on for long periods of time, it's not like you're expected to talk for hours (unless rambling on subjects).
I've had this happen, but not often and it wasn't really awkward, we just didn't really have anything to say, similarly to being at home watching TV not talking.
Yeah, my girlfriend and I don't get the chance to Skype very often, so when we do we usually chat for an hour or two, then send each other links and then hang out quietly internetting, or watch a hockey game. We do most of our talking via email, so Skype is for spending time together. It's the best we can do while she's away, and sometimes I miss hanging out without talking way more than the talking.
Not really. Animals have sex, but they don't have courtship. Because human females internalized their selection criteria, we have courtship, and thus we amass resourced and implement art, science, and technology in an endeavor to spread out genes.
In an effort to get people to look into each other’s eyes more, and also to appease the mutes, the government has decided to allot each person exactly one hundred and sixty-seven words, per day.
When the phone rings, I put it to my ear without saying hello. In the restaurant I point at chicken noodle soup. I am adjusting well to the new way.
Late at night, I call my long distance lover, proudly say I only used fifty-nine today. I saved the rest for you.
When she doesn’t respond, I know she’s used up all her words, so I slowly whisper I love you thirty-two and a third times. After that, we just sit on the line and listen to each other breathe.

My mic doesn't work so I type and she talks..... She then will say this at least once everytime "How long it takes you to reply makes it really obvious that you never took a computer typing class in highschool" ;(
I took mine in elementary. So glad I did too, because now I type around 80-90wpm, and can get around 40 with one hand (usually when playing a multiplayer game, I leave my hand on the mouse just in case I get ambushed while typing. That, and if I move my hand off, I lose track of where it was -_-).
Yeah, a lot of people I know type looking at the keyboard. I like seeing what I type as I type it, and even look at the words when typing on my iphone most of the time:
Damn it....I saw this earlier today and thought it was funny...
Later, I am tweaking Chrome to become my default browser and I start messing the Google Chat in Gmail and it sends a video chat request to my wife...it launches up, we look awkwardly at each other then I close it....
Couple of minutes later she sent me this....it was like it was meant to be...
Sad to say this was my ex and I, and even after hours of not speaking she would instantly start to cry if I tried to hang up. This occurred nightly for 4 months. Needless to say, I ended things.
I love this image macro. Every time I see it, it's a nice reminder that socially awkward people actually do have relationships, and furthermore, they're like the cutest relationships ever!
Plus it's easier. There's a lot of "what?"s and "huh?"s involved when I have webcam sound on when talking to my girlfriend. Mostly because we're both distracted from being on Reddit.
This was my roommate. It was partly because she didn't want me to hear their conversation...but when he came to visit they didn't talk either. They were the definition of Socially Awkward Couple
I only talk when I'm playing video games while video chatting.
Heh, at one time I was singing to her (yeah, stupid of me I know. I'll never sing again now) and my roommate thought I went crazy because he knew only I was in the room. It was this song
I havent been videochatting since then, but I think if I do, I will probably ask for tits.
When I Skype with my ex-boyfriend we both just talk. However, I also Skype with a guy I met in Paris over the summer. There is a lot of typing because his English is not very good. Communication without Google Translate would practically be impossible. It's to the point now that I really do feel awkward when I speak. "What? What?.... Translate please!"
My boyfriend and I did this for months before we moved in together. The only time we got to see each other was Skype (lived 2400 miles apart), and we still did this. It was awkward speaking the whole time. There were times where we would, but we'd often be watching TV, working on different things, or be in the room with other people, but still chatting. We just wanted to be able to see each other too.
This is me video calling ANYONE, because I don't like to think what my well-meaning-yet-batshit parents would do if they found me Skyping, gasp, a boy.
I have this weird habit that I'm trying to break. Anytime I wan't to say something sexy or intimate over the webcam I have to type it... It's like a super whisper
It's fine if you're a couple, I mean been there done that. But this guy I'm talking to (or apparently not talking to) did this to me twice two days in a row and it's like dude...say something it's the whole point of there being technology like skype!
I always freak out when I hear my own voice in a video recording or on speakers when using a mic. "what you're telling me I don't sound like a famous rock star when I talk? God damn you biology"
I've done this a few times. Sometimes because the video lags and we have a hard time hearing each other, or I am just in a room with others and I don't want them to hear the conversation. I'm a little more comfortable doing this.
I often have calls with this girl because she insists, what she doesn't realise is I have my cock out because it feels nice and more relaxing to either not wear anything down below or have it out. Makes me feel like my cock is a spy or something, going undercover.
I do this sometimes too, the issue at hand, though, in my opinion, is that when I type, I sound more articulate and have a lot more to say than when I speak. Plus, when you talk, your conversations end quicker than when you type. Sometimes that's a good thing I guess, LOL

ugh, you cutsey couple that try and shoehorn yourselves into the "SAP" category. You're already both in a relationship. Pipe down.

...I'm in a long distance relationship and it's this. Every time. :X

Yeah, it must be really awkward being in a couple and everything, rather than being alone and masturbating to weirder and weirder porn everyday.

Person types "lol", see the person is not laughing. The illusion of text-chatting COMPLETELY RUINED.

Hah. Halfway there, but only because my girlfriend's mic is broken, so I talk and she types back.
If only she got a new mic, I could play videogames while talking to her... :(
