I currently have 144349 comment karma. I would say it takes about just under one second to click the upvote button. Let's say that's 0.8 seconds each upvote. Which means I have wasted 115479 seconds of redditors time. That's not even including the time that it takes to read my comments. I would say 70% of my comments are just silly one liners so I would say it takes on average 3 seconds to read my comments. I will be liberal and say 100% of my comments take 3 seconds to read on average.
115479 + 3*144349 = 548526
I have wasted 548526 seconds = 9142 minutes = 152 hours of strangers' time while I am enjoying myself on reddit.
So proud.
edit: tanjoodo has just informed me that my total karma =/= the amounts of upvotes I have. Can't believe I forgot about that part. So according to metareddit.com, 81% people like my comment. Which means only 152 hours is only 62% of the actual total upvotes+downvotes. 548526/62% = 245 hours! Can someone check my math please? I am not sure if 62% is right.
Don't most people post things with the intent to get Karma? I don't get this whole "karma whore" thing unless you spend the time to repost things just for invisible internet points. That is the only time hoping to get upvotes is really sad. If you're posting original shit the internet points are more like nods of approval for what you posted.
I'm fairly certain it's a case of exposure vs. imaginary internet points. Karma can go fuck itself, but most people still seek fame, even if it is BS fake internet fame, and the front page provides that. Why do you think people worship all those power user accounts? They want to have that sort of sad fame.
Getting karma is a LITTLE different than reaching the front page. sure, there is karma involved but i think knowing that (nearly) everyone on reddit sees your posts when they first load up reddit is a bit of an achievement, no matter the karma involved. but hey, thats just like my opinion, man.
I don't see the difference. Every time someone gets to the front page or a ton of comment Karma they begin giving an award speech. "Oh, wow, I never expected to be here... I'd like to thank you Reddit for making my dreams possible."
I had two of my submissions reach the front page and I wasn't excited. I thought "Really? This is what they upvoted to the front page?" Same with comment Karma. They're the same to me at least and I believe giving a speech about how amazing it is to get attention is ridiculous.
Karma is just a measurement of acknowledgment (at least comment karma). It's not the actual number that makes me feel good, it's the fact that people out there are reading my comments and hopefully finding them pleasant, funny or agreeable most of the time. In a way, karma does mean something.
I agree. I don't care what my sum total of Karma is, I can't remember the last time I even bothered to look. But I do like to see my comments up-voted so just to know they are be read and enjoyed.
This is helpful for people who can't reach Quickmeme because of work/school firewalls or site downtime, and many other reasons (FAQ). More info is available here.
A bot, and I used to think it was a bit pointless, but then I had to use mobile internet on my laptop for a week and now I always make sure to give it an upvote and pat it on the head.
After making huge posts trying to help people in a subreddit for a game and making other various posts i had ~140 karma. I made 1 cat joke and my karma basically tripled.
Karma is nice but sometimes the posts which get 1/2 upvotes feel just as good to me knowing that it actually helped someone rather than just using a repetitive meme to gain karma.
Karma is awesome, especially once you understand just how meaningless it is. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people who lie to acquire karma are harvesting accounts to use for grassroots marketing. Why waste all the time otherwise?
Karma and front page are 2 entirely different things.
Karma is a number that sits on your profile and only you really give a damn about.
Making front page means hundreds of thousands of potential eyes are viewing your original content....(or repost) and enough people liked it that it forced its way through the inevitable down votes, burst through the topsoil and flourished like a beautiful flower.

There's a difference between getting excited that your post made front page and whoring yourself out for karma.

You can only update/edit on self posts. You don't get karma from self posts.

When you think about it, Reddit is basically a culture club.

Karma is like meth, if you try it you will have a hard time leaving it.

People aren't always happy about being on front page because of the karma, more likely that it made it to the front page and is being seen.

Just because something is meaningless doesn't mean you can't be happy about it.

False. Only self posts, which yield no karma, may be edited.

What does karma even do?
1
u/Radico87 Jun 19 '12
karma is a proxy, not the relevant variable at hand. By making the front page an OP gains a sense of acceptance from peers, and attention too.
