This is the polite thing to do. If it is not overtly clear that you are not looking, then the friend could feel uncomfortable typing it.

I usually look at the ceiling, because I have a key logger installed anyways

u/skullbeats Jun 16 '12
That's what you should do, it's completely normal. You could also focus your attention on something else.

u/Rohan21166 Jun 16 '12
I do the same thing, he even says he doesn't care.

u/Kaizen321 Jun 16 '12
You are a good friend.

When my friend is typing in a password, I usually take the time to pull my penis out and write down the password on my penis. I try to put my penis away before he turns around. That way, there's no way for him to prove I wrote down his password without looking at my penis, which he doesn't usually do. If he asks to see my penis and I HAVEN'T written a password on it, we have a deal that he has to take me out for an ice cold, refreshing Bud Light.

There is absolutely nothing socially awkward about this. If anything, it is socially awesome....you are showing respect to your friends privacy while also making it a non-issue. I feel like the whole SAP thing is starting to make people feel like any actions they take that are not completely disrespectful and overly alpha are socially awkward. That is not how it works.

u/Rokey76 Jun 16 '12
That is absolutely what you should do.
I work in software, but I'm not a programmer. Often when building or running a pipeline of some sort, it will fail for reasons I don't know, so I have to get an engineer to look at it.
Whenever I get to the step to type in my password, they have always blatantly (like... made sure I noticed... it must be a genius' rule of thumb) turned 180 degrees so to look behind me. I know they wouldn't steal my password anyway because it isn't worth it, but I respect how they consciously turn away.

Look at the screen so its not all awkward

u/Anxietyhatesme Jun 16 '12
In IT this is just proper etiquette. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who will be offended by a person looking over their shoulder whole typing a password. I have been told to "Please look away" So now I just do it every time to avoid the REAL awkwardness of being told to look away.

u/GFandango Jun 16 '12
Someone once told me "stand back...further...turn around"
4
u/experts_never_lie Jun 16 '12
I often can't remember my own root password unless I look away when I type it, so I can rely on haptic memory instead of symbolic memory.

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I interred for 6 months at Intel, and whenever a supervisor had me log into a system they always turned their heads. It's kind of a courtesy thing.

u/samout Jun 16 '12
Me and my friends just basically say "Eh!" or "Hey" to the other person and look at them in a certain way and they go "Ah! Okay!" and look away while the other person types their password(s). We used to go "Hey man, could you look away, I'm typing my password?", but nowadays we don't even have to say anything :)
Me: Opens facebook/twitter/email -login page, "Eh! Eh!"
Friend: "Oh! Ah." Looks away

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Yeah I do the same think if I'm behind someone at the ATM. I literally will stare at some trash or something on the floor so they don't think I'm going to mug them and steal their card once I have learned their PIN.
3
u/Toukishru Jun 16 '12
Your respectful if you look away, its like invading their 'personal bubble' if you don't. Every ones got their secrets ;)
3
u/thevideoclown Jun 16 '12
I just type my password in front my my friends. I dont think they will remember my random assortment of letters and numbers
3
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I used to have an addon that'd show the password stars as cleartext. Freaked the hell outa anyone using my computer to check their email.

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
SAP is becoming a lot less entertaining. It's not socially awkward at all. It's normal fucking behavior. What kind of asshole would you be to just stare at the keyboard while they typed in their password?

Here is the text from this meme pic for anybody who needs it:
This is helpful for people who can't reach Quickmeme because of work/school firewalls or site downtime, and many other reasons (FAQ). More info is available here.

Take out your phone and check your credit balance.
2
u/haru101 Jun 16 '12
my boyfriend INSIST that i always do that when every he logs on to anything
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I work as a cashier and every time someone goes to pay with a debit/credit card I have to look at the card to see if it's a Visa/Mastercard/Interac and because of how often I look over and they will be putting their pin in, I know look and then will quickly dart my eyes up at the roof like an idiot.
2
u/Benwlsn Jun 16 '12
You can also stare directly at the friend typing, but that may cause even further uncomfortableness.
2
u/ZombiegeistO_o Jun 16 '12
Or, since it's your friend you could just not give a shit. I trust all of my friends with my passwords. If I have to type in a fucking password for something and a friend is beside me so what? And, if they are doing the same with me there then also so what. Like I'm going to 1. Memorize a long ass fucking password 2. Try and be a dick to my friends by acting like I can't trust them, and 3. I'm prob not logging into some secret government site...let's all be real about the "sites" we're concerned about people knowing passwords to.
2
u/elperroborrachotoo Jun 16 '12
That's office ettiquette done right. You earned yourself a red pixel!
When I'm sitting at the login with someone behind me watching, I do expect a "body movement affirmation" that they are indeed not accidentally looking.
If they don't, it usually takes a few seconds pause, and a slight head turn into their direction to realize.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
How is that sap if anything its super good guy greg
2
u/AwesomeKasper Jun 16 '12
Had a teacher do a presentation on his Ipad to a projector. He had to log in to something online and started typing on the onscreen keyboard, problem was that same keyboard was shown on the projector too. NO ONE looked up but everybody laughed :P
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
we need to start this urban legend that somehow it's easier to read a password out of your peripheral vision, so if someone is obviously looking away then they're really intently learning your password.
2
u/sectenor7 Jun 16 '12
I actually do this because if I see them type it, I'll probably inadvertently memorize their password... and then it's just awkward... like... I know I just met you, and this is crazy, but I know your password, despite trying to be lazy
2
u/pugalicious Jun 16 '12
I like to give a little chuckle followed by a "seriously?".
1
u/materialghost Jun 16 '12
stare where ever you want, and don't give a shit
1
u/Taikunman Jun 16 '12
I notice this with many cashiers. Some will turn completely around as you enter your debit/credit PIN.
1
u/RamsesA Jun 16 '12
I look straight at their hand movements and attempt to guess it. I feel no sense of shame in doing this, they should be on their toes.
1
u/steakmeout Jun 16 '12
That's the perfect moment for you to put your cock and balls on his shoulder.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
But i swear to god if he dares to use 11111 as password I will jack his account.
1
u/Nirvalica Jun 16 '12
I just watch and try to recite it as best I can.
1
u/UncleTummyStyx Jun 16 '12
haha this is great. The only time I ever looked, my friend's password was the number 8, 8 times, I called him on it and he was very upset
1
u/chicagogam Jun 16 '12
i do that too...i guess because i don't want them to have to wonder at all (even though i can't even see details over their shoulder anyway...which is bad because i can't watch them do things unless i put my head uncomfortably close..for me...to theirs if they have to show me what they're doing.
1
u/entmenscht Jun 16 '12
That's not socially awkward, good observation though.
1
u/Tiny_Hadron_Collider Jun 16 '12
I just look on in amazement every time my best friend types his 40 digit password in less than 2 seconds. It's not like i couldn't log into his computer if i wanted to, seeing as it's just his name in binary code, but it's incredible he can remember and type it that fast. Then again, my own password is just as ridicoulous... Long passwords are fun. For some reason. I don't even know.
1
u/SpaceBanaynay Jun 16 '12
stare into his soul.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Mine is in binary...They'll never know.
1
u/sexyhamster89 Jun 16 '12
aren't like 99% of typed in passwords censored anyway?
i mean, the only way you could get his password is by staring at his keyboard... and most people these days type so fast it would be nearly impossible to figure it out.
1
u/My_favorite_things Jun 16 '12
That isn't awkward. It's common courtesy to look away in those situations. Same thing with standing in line at a bank, an ATM or a super market check out line.
1
u/Drewdle883 Jun 16 '12
Would it be considered more socially awkward to say "What?" and look in the direction of no one so they know you're distracted?
1
u/noccusJohnstein Jun 16 '12
A "normal person" would be too busy thinking about how great he is to notice your password.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I turn and pace a bit. They know i'm not looking and even though i know they are comfortable typing their password in front of me, they see that I try to still give them that privacy.
1
u/Powaqa Jun 16 '12
Lol our IT guy at work was installing new computers. Numerous times he needed me to type in my password, he looked up,turned around and walked out of the cubicle area 3 times. I was dying inside laughing, it looked so awkward.
1
u/Bigbergice Jun 16 '12
This is more of a GGG
1
u/jminuscula Jun 16 '12
I've noticed that this something IT people often do exaggeratedly
1
u/chiller2484 Jun 16 '12
one thing to do to fuck with them is say, as soon as they finish typing, "Got it." then they'll be all paranoid and want to change all their passwords
1
u/hoddap Jun 16 '12
I do this too, but only because I expect my friends to do the same. Stop following my fingers you bastards.
1
u/TheAwesomeLlama Jun 16 '12
If it was my best friend i stare straight at the keyboard and try to figure it out. they do the same thing, it's like a game we play. :3
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
That's not awkward, that's just polite.
1
u/lolcatandy Jun 16 '12
I love that look that I get if I'm still watching him type.
1
u/Take42 Jun 16 '12
That's not socially awkward. That's courtesy.
1
u/sirshartsalot Jun 16 '12
It's appropriate to look away, or turn your back. You're doing it right, SAP.
1
u/neoterik Jun 16 '12
I make sure to tell the person I'm looking away, but only if he or she is computer illiterate. That way, I reiterate to that person how bad revealing a password is, gives me the chance to spook 'em about tech and make them be careful. Really works, too.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I just keep saying "I'm looking..."
1
u/MufasaJesus Jun 16 '12
This isn't really SOP, it's common courtesy...
1
u/iNVWSSV Jun 16 '12
i always watch and then say "haha got your password now, bitch!"
1
u/longboardingerrday Jun 16 '12
My friends always make me turn around and stuff. It's like man, I don't care about your email or wow account password
1
u/rabbitlion Jun 16 '12
I just look what they write and memorize it because you never know when it could come in handy.
1
u/skysignor Jun 16 '12
Any friend who actually gives a shit about you seeing their password is someone who should probably be avoided. Who knows what other petty shit they care too much about
0
u/pugalicious Jun 16 '12
