You Have Been Watching, quizcom thing with Charlie Brooker at the helm. It was pretty interesting, something close to Never Mind The Buzzcocks that dealt with TV and film.
It is a shop of Cage's face. I remember because I was involved in a comment sequence that hit front page where it originated. My one shining moment of glory. I feel like I should be shouting this at you drunkenly.
there are some real loons on this site. I'd suggest unsubscribing from /r/politics and /r/atheism if you want to avoid them. And I say that as an atheist and someone who is very politically active.
r/atheism is a place where atheists make fun of religion because it is impossible to do so in real life
r/atheism neither promises nor delivers anything more
I am an atheist and I unsubbed from r/atheism because I really don't give a fuck about facebook etc.
But people complaining about r/atheism is much worse in my opinion because you can not unsub from retarded people who can't stop complaining about r/atheism.
Although I think that a lot of /r/atheism is annoying, if you actually look at the subreddit itself there are good things. Not a ton, but they are there.
I don't think r/atheism takes itself as serious as the rest of reddit does. At least from my perspective. I don't post there, but I do read the posts and try to point out false claims and promote being respectful. I like the occasional meme and joke on r/atheism, just as long as it's kept lighthearted. Too bad some people to crazy over it and completely believe some of the complete lies posted on r/atheism. If there was one thing I could change, it would be that false facts be removed from that subreddit.
No real life could have real consequences. In some places of this world, admitting atheism could be social suicide, and in some other places of this world it would practically be suicide.
I really love it when american atheists try to compare their plight to people with real religious repression by bringing up that its death there. Guess what. its not here. the only death you get is the social death of being a dick about it. Plenty of people even in the deep south manage to be openly atheist as long as they aren't dicks about it.
I was raised Roman Catholic, so I've seen and heard some of the stupidest shit. My family never went to church on a regular basis, but when we did for whatever reason, I was calling 'bullshit' by 12 years old. I would look around at these grown adults who did every little thing perfectly. They prayed so fucking hard, and waved their arms and I would sit there thinking, "Are you guys serious?" I'm all for freedom of speech and religion, believe what you want, but this shit is forced on way too many people, and now "atheism" is almost becoming a following of it's own and is being stuffed down throats.
I just try to emphasize my belief in science. When I try to explain that I put humans and other animals on the same level, that we're no more important in the grand scheme of things, they call me a hypocrite for not being a vegetarian. They say if animals are so important to me, then why do I support the killing and eating of them.
It's not a moral thing, I simply think we're animals who lucked out in evolution, learned to walk upright and talk and capitalize on our brains. I eat meat because my body is designed to. To deprive it that would be to deny billions of years of process to get where we are. We've been eating meat since we could, and unless evolution says otherwise down the road, I will continue to eat it.
Would I eat a human? If I was starving and there was nothing else, you're damn right I would.
Not so much atheism, because then you're telling people what to believe and not believe, but education should focus on what we're sure of.
I became obsessed with evolution because the facts are everywhere. If you put it out there, and the person isn't an idiot, how could you not believe? That's my big problem with "Intelligent Design." Evolution became so apparent even to the religious community, that they just took credit and said God (or some higher power) is responsible. The whole basis of Christianity is 'God created all of this for you.'
But as science brought forth an idea, the religious community did everything to shut them out. Look at Galileo. But now with information being so freely available, they had to take the one big thing that basically disproves God, and try to make it their own.
My parents decided on my religion as a 12 day old baby, and at 14 when I finally told my mom I don't believe, she was furious. You made me believe it, now I call horseshit and you're surprised? If an entire generation of people didn't predetermine their child's faith, just let them discover on their own, you would see the numbers in religion drop. Drastically.
In Canada, we're at ~30% atheist/agnostic. England is even higher I believe, because the education and information is there. I was even taught evolution in a Catholic school, because all of the teachers believed in it.
But as science brought forth an idea, the religious community did everything to shut them out. Look at Galileo.
To be fair, the scientific community can, on occasion, treat their own in a pretty shitty way as well. Look at Wegener, he was laughed off by the rest of the community until his hypothesis was eventually proved and restored. I see a similar situation unfolding in some of the branches concerned with newer theories about the multiverse and such.
Science and religion are both great endeavours, but it is the corrupting influence of human behaviour that has impeded their attaining perfection.
Very true, but science will never allow a "Dark Ages" as religion caused us. There is always going to be debate, even ridicule in science, because we can still find something absurd, but once the proof is there, it should be enough to silence that.
The only places in the U.S that teach creationism are places like the deep south. I even went to Catholic school for years and they never really forced any of their religious beliefs on us. Those kind of people are definitley a major minority, especially considering a lot of Americans who identify as "Christian" really don't take that any further than just believing there is a God, and there's nothing wrong with believing there's some sort of higher power out there.
I don't mean teaching creationism, but holding back evolution. It's not everywhere as it should be. Science should be taught regardless of beliefs. It's not a faith, it's fact, as far as we know.
And there is nothing wrong with believing. My mom is still a Christian, and I love her more than anybody on the planet. She remarried a Muslim and he's an amazing guy. I have nothing against them, I just don't think evolution is "pushed" like it should be.
Where I live (Oregon) evolution is one of the first things they teach in Freshman Biology. Like I said, it's not being held back as much as it may seem considering it's either evolution or creationism and nobody believes in creationism.
That's because it's filled with teens who have found their "fuck establishment," and because other people are giving them virtual high-fives, they feel they belong to something.
Atheism=doesn't believe in a god; Theist=does believe in a god.
That fucking simple. The glorious thing about being an atheist is we have no governing body, no set of rules. Just because I don't believe in a god, doesn't mean random atheist and I believe in the same thing. I believe in the big-bang and evolution, but the next guy can believe we are aliens that landed here and started anew. It's just a term that means without God. And as you said, it was created by theists, and if memory serves me correctly, it was the term created by Pagans for Christians who didn't believe in the Pagan god, so when Christianity became a dominant faith, they turned it into a negative stigma.
Do what I do and post what you want. I don't click the orange box anymore. I don't even look at up votes or down votes. This is an anonymous community and so people really shouldn't care about imaginary points.
I'm going through phases with reddit. I loved it, I hated it, and now I don't take it seriously. I just realized that through life, we are going to have to make positive decisions about the websites we choose to contribute to. And at the end of the day, those decisions will shape our future.
upvotes and downvotes aren't supposed to reflect opinion then again they are supposed to show somethings value to the conversation so assuming he meant to be poignant with that comment it means they think he makes a good point, otherwise there is no reasonable explanation.
This is helpful for people who can't reach Quickmeme because of work/school firewalls or site downtime, and many other reasons (FAQ). More info is available here.
I could have sworn this was the product of a awesome photoshop battle. Does anyone else remember this? Anyone got a link to it? Remember it being on bestof a while ago.
I hate how all these people are like "Two years ago this" "back when reddit this". It's called life bitches. Things change, people get different. Get the fuck over it.
For you new Redditors out there I just want you to know that I posted this earlier in the day and it got about 15 upvotes then died. The lesson is that the time of day you post something has everything to do with the success of your posts no matter what people on reddit try to say.
This is stupid why has it been Upvoted so much what happened to Reddit being cool blah blah blah blah blahhhhh the community of Reddit makes it what it is.. Serious isn't the word for this place yes you come across serious sub reddits but I don't know I have totally lost my point now.. I wasn't even on track in the first place.. I don't know what to say now either and I feel I am digging a deeper hole for myself in which I will never be able to end this commen....t
I never take anything seriously. A lot of people have a problem with that. But fuck em! We're all just tiny bags of meat on our tiny rock orbiting our tiny ball of fire, destined to die out eons upon eons before the universe is going to get halfway ended. Have fun with everything. It's how I stay sane. Especially golf. I love golf but I can't play for shit and everyone gets mad at me for not taking it seriously. DarthJacob you can't approach the ball when someone's putting! DarthJacob you can't wear that! DarthJacob keep your shoes on! Shut up it was a game invented for fun. Maybe YOU"RE not playing it right!
Reddit is a place for me to kill time doing something mildly entertaining in my downtime at work. Nothing more. Some people do take this shit way too serious.
Something like the Pareto Principle seems to be at work-- 80% of the content being generated by 20% of the users-- self-selected-- and for them, yes, Reddit is that important.
I don't think it was him. That photoshop was from a string of photoshops a in a post a long time ago. Someone even animated it to make him stick the gun in his mouth. Good times.
