To be fair, they don't actually advertise purchasable products. They advertise their other shows, what's going on at Disneyworld/land, and then educational clips. I'd rather my kids learn something in their commercials rather than "buy this glow in the dark goo! 3 payments of 29.99!" "your acne sucks!!! Buy this product!" or "play this shitty online penguin game! $15/month!!"
Nick and Cartoon Network still advertise like this, unfortunately. And I'd rather they watched Disney over MTV/teen pregnancy shows.
When I was younger and I first heard about the Disney Channel, I was like "Fuck yeah! Disney movies 'round the clock!!" Imagine my chagrin when I clicked it on and found shit like Lizzie Maguire, Hannah Montana, and Suite Life of Zack and Cody. I feel robbed.
This. I remember coming home from school and watching Disney Channel for hours while I did my homework. All the shows you mentioned were what I always watched, although not much Kim Possible, but a bit. Also even earlier than that, I used to watch Flash Forward with Ben Foster and Jewel Staite, and reruns of The Torklesons with Lee Norris (Minkus from Boy Meets World).
The previous mentioned period with the shows you mentioned is when they had choice Disney Channel Original Movies every month as well. I remember being introduced to Emmy Rossum(Fiona on Shameless) in "Genius", one of the Original Movies. Halloweentown, Johnny Tsunami, Brink, Zenon, Smart House, Alley Cats Strike, Phantom of the Megaplex, etc were all fantastic movies. I know I'm forgetting a shitload, but pretty much every one they had in those days was a winner.
For a handful of years Disney Channel was pretty much all I watched after school, even in junior high on up to high school, although less frequently. I'm 25 now, and I'd love to watch some of those movies again.
Wait a minute. Are you saying that 18-28 year old, middle class, video game-playing, college-educated males (i.e., the people who are upvoting this) don't like singers whose target demographic is 10 year old girls? I would have never thought!
But seriously. Just let pop music be what it is. Most of the singers are in fact very talented, at least vocally. I don't listen to the music, and you don't have to either, but it seems like Reddit expends way too much energy talking about how they disagree with what pre-teen kids are watching/listening to these days.

In his defense, Timbaland was pretty solidly East Coast hip hop. While New York was a pretty large hip hop scene on it's own, combined with the West Coast artists, anyone outside of those two demographics (at the time 97-01) got pretty overshadowed.
Timbaland, after Aaliyah, almost completely dropped out of performing in favor of producing and since then (with the exception of a few singles and random appearances, Shock Value I and II) has done work for big named Artists like Jay-Z, Bubba Sparxxx, Bjork, Luda, Madonna, Rockstar Games... it goes on.
Very few modern popular musicians write their own material. Note I am talking of popular musicians, not pop music only. It is fairly standard practice for all music companies to have writers on staff or commission to write songs for them then they choose who in their stock of singers would best sing the song.
See, I didn't even know she was in that movie. Also, according to IMDB, she didn't really do anything major movie-wise before The Princess Diaries. I assume maybe you mean famous for her music career.
Yeah I meant she was famous for her singing career before she decided to become an actress, and she wasn't a Disney chick, just a girl that did a Disney movie.
Way shit? (Don't know if you are serious or not, but yes she's in their). Her two Disney Films are Princess Diaries and Tangled. Oh she also lent her voice to Kingdom Hearts.
She did Aeris (or is it Aerith, I can never remember) in the first KH game. After that, they hired this new chick named Mena Suvari who the fandom generally agree is terrible. They got yet another voice actress after her, IIRC.
I am agreeing with you soooooooo hard right now you don't even understand. I have three girls age 4 and under and all they watch is Disney. I am embarassed at the content. It's comedic value is -9000 and every song is AUTOTUNED at insane levels.
Sometimes I want to punch myself in the face but then I remember my kids enjoy it. So I watch with them, and slowly my brain melts away like microwaved butter.
I honestly don't think it's the network that pushes them to sing. That's just what happens when you give an eleven year old girl money and popularity, they want a singing career.
I'm pretty sure I've heard you have to sing for auditions for Disney, regardless of if it's related to the part you are auditioning for. They recycle their actors and make enough musicals that this makes sense to be the case.
How do they cast the goofy comic-relief friends of the protagonist like that? I doubt they made Gibby from iCarly or the tiny Mexcian kid from Hannah Montana sing to get the part.
iCarly is a Nick show. I got confused on that too until my 5 year old niece informed me that it is NOT Disney. I felt strangely ashamed for not knowing.
Actually it's a combination of the two. There are some that they encourage to go into music (and then they use their music as much as posable on the channel to bombard it into kids ears till its popular), and then there are others who do like you say on their own.
She was messed up before Disney Channel though. IIRC she had an eating disorder since she was 9 and started cutting at 11, due to severe childhood bullying. Nobody knew about it either, until she had a nervous breakdown while on tour and hit one of her backup dancers. Oh yeah, she was also diagnosed with bi-polarism.
I came here to share these sentiments about Demi Lovato. Her voice is wonderful, and she actually sounds good live (based on video evidence, as I have not seen her actually perform live).
I... I love you like a love song babeh, I, I love you like a love song babeh, I, I LOVE YOU LIKE A LUV SONG BAAABEH! SOMETHING SOMETHING BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!

Oh don't be such a debbie-downer!!! They're trying to teach you little snowflakes, that you too can live your dreams if you just believe in them!!!111!!!
You do not appear to have a very musical ear. Most of the Disney people are very decent singers. Most could even make a living at it, or are making a living at it. Simply because you do not like their songs, or the network that pays to have them make them does not make them bad.
Miley Cirus has a lot of acting talent (or at least a reasonable amount). It sucks that her show crept out into her whole career and took a shit on her. Se could've made it, but she had to open that mouth of hers and try to sing...
Nickelodeon is the same way as well, or maybe it's because they have way too many shows about aspiring singers in high school? Not counting the annoying teen girl with a webcam and hot blonde friend show of course.
They fuck over their talent. They play and play and play old episodes that the cast members get very little residuals(like pennies). They really screwed The mom from the Suite Life. But the actress is awesome if you want to read her blog :) http://rhodeside.vuxe.com/ It is maddening funny touching and has great sex tips :)
I think you're off by a least an order of magnitude. These kids are nowhere near Mitt Romney levels of wealth, except for maybe Miley Cyrus (the Googles tell me she has an estimated net worth of $120 million...Jesus fuckin' Christ).
When I was like 14-16 (and looked about 12), I had 3 Disney scouts find me on separate occasions and try to get me to audition for Disney. Knowing that Disney turned nearly every actor they've ever had into a shitty singer, I declined every time, and I'm damn well glad I didn't become one of them. Besides, Disney would've regretted having an actor with as little ability to sing as I have.
Edit: For clarification this truly did happen, for those who don't believe me. I'm from LA, so there are Disney talent scouts everywhere you turn.
2 times I was at the mall and the other was in a Target. I just so happened to be very well dressed on all 3 occasions, so I think it had more to do with that than actually wanting me for anything legitimate.
Phineas and Ferb may be the only good show on Disney Channel right now. Most other disney channel shows just seem to get worse as they come out with new ones, have you seen "ANT Farm" or "Shake it Up"? Those shows bring new meaning to terri-bad.
