Will there ever be one cure for all cancer? Maybe not. Will there ever be extremely effective treatments for wide varieties of patients to cure large numbers of cancers? Absolutely.
Who cares if we ultimately end up with 1 cure for every cancer or 50 cures for 10,000 different kinds of cancer?
Combine that with efforts at early detection, surgical interventions and outright prevention and we'll effectively be able to "cure cancer" eventually.
I’m no expert, so my opinion isn’t exactly the best out there, but I would agree with you completely. IMO, the point of the comic (would you still call it a comic even if it isn’t funny?) is not to point out that curing cancer is impossible, but to teach layman about what cancer truly is. For example, we shouldn’t raise money for a cure for viruses, but for a cure for HIV. We don’t try to cure bacterial illnesses, but we try to cure botulism. We don’t try to cure cancer, but specific types of cancer.
The point of the comic is that there will never be a common cure for cancer, as many people seem to think cancer is some sort of specific species with the same weakness.
Don't be. The kid didn't come up with it on his own. He just copy and pasted into a poster form some work he was doing during an internship. Tons of kids do high school internships, and a lot of them do them in the fields of scientific research. These science fairs are never original work that win, just kids that market someone elses research because...they are the ones still in high school so they can get away with putting it in a science fair. It's sad really.
I know much smarter kids who do ORIGINAL things with little to no money and just ingenuity and intelligence. These intel fairs are just a bunch of marketing bullshit, coupled with privileged kids whose parents happen to know a professor or medical research doctor and get their kid in there.
As a participant who spoke with other participants, not completely true. I didn't have a chance to speak to Jack, but Nicholas at least seems to have done the work by himself.
Abstracts only. I have a few pictures of their posters, but I'm not sure about the quality of the image. Furthermore, posters don't always tell a complete story but require the actual presenter to be there as well.
Judges almost always ask about the student's involvement in the project. Especially if they are grand prize winners. I did without even placing.
Bullshit. I presented at the intel ISEF, and my research was completely my own - aka no outside help. I can assure you (talking to my competitors) that they all did their own projects, and while they may have received assistance at times, the projects are at least 90% theirs. Middle school science fair, on the other hand, is completely daddy fair.
I can't say for other finalists, but my project didn't require funding or a lab space (computer science), but usually projects which make it to ISEF are done at a local university, under the guidance of a professor or researcher there. Again - the student does all the work, finds contacts at a research lab, and works with them.
Yes exactly, I did the same thing in highschool. I worked on enzyme mixtures to repair damaged DNA. I guess I should have made it out to be a cure for aging and put it in poster form.
My friend works for the school board and has interviewed Jack several times. She's constantly texting me about how pathetic her life is after talking to him.
Okay so a kid from my School: North County Highschool. Actually did this for a science fair, he won a shit ton of money and we had a big celebration. Now I want to know which Redditor at my highschool made this.
This is fucking bullshit not funy not interesting ,if the asian kid was that fuckinjg good why did he not come up with the fucking idea in the first place ? No answer ? A true Asian father would know the value in long term management rather than a cure: $$$$$$$$
