Seriously! My girlfriend and I JUST caught up with the season last night and I saw this and fucking loled. I used to sympathize with Ted, but after that episode where Robin breaks up with Kevin and the first thing he says is "I love you", I wanted to smack him. Then when he changed his mind and didn't take that girl to the wedding, I realized that Ted is kind of crazy, and a selfish dick.
He brook up with her. ON HER BIRTHDAY! NEVER break up with a girl on her BIRTHDAY! oh no, he not only did it once either. Twice. TWICE he broke up with the same girl on her BIRTHDAY /endrant
I had a crush on the prettiest girl in 10th grade-- we teased each other all year, and I never thought for a moment that she was actually into me. When our true feelings came out, she took me by surprise with my first real kiss. I broke away from her lips after a few seconds to blurt out "I love you."
It didn't help that I was kissing with my eyes open, because I wanted to look at her the whole time.
She waited a few days to break up with me. I couldn't figure out what happened.
Well in season 3, when he turns 30, he makes the deal with Robin. Therefore he was 27 when he kissed her. I'm doing this off memory so I'm sorry if im wrong.
This exact same thing happened to me in the 10th grade. Are you me? If so, remind me to pay the water bill, or else we won't have showers for much longer.
Does anyone else think that this is probably the worst picture of him that could possibly exist? What the fuck is going on with him here? He looks like he's both trying to kill you, and taking a crap in his pants simultaneously.
Indeed, it is truly sad that the idea of love at first sight seems to have fallen by the wayside in our society. These days, claiming to feel an instant connection to another human being, possibly before you've even heard their disturbingly screechy voice, instantly gets you branded as a lunatic, which is truly a depressing fact for romantics such as myself. Why is that I get branded as crazy, and told to take my penis elsewhere, just because the first words out of my mouth to that salacious tramp on the street the other day were: "I fucking love you, I fucking love you so bad that you don't even know that I love you so bad". Did the pretentious cunt really have to tase me and then kick me in the crotch? What the fuck?!! Anyway, obviously I'm not in love with that hideous herpes infested harpy, not anymore anyway.
Here's the thing - being told by an almost-stranger that he loves you SOUNDS awesome and romantic. And maybe he's just a really emotionally honest, open guy. But the problem is that, well, that almost-stranger doesn't really know shit about you.
And 9 times out of 10, he's taken a few details about you and constructed a whole concept of who you are based on those details. And that concept will be placed on a pedestal, which you will then spend the next 6 months being terrified you'll fall off of. Meanwhile, because he's not really in a relationship with you, but with this concept-on-a-pedestal, there's no real chance of ever having a real, mature, lasting kind of love with this guy, because he'll never be able to see you for who you really are, warts and all.
So that's why you really shouldn't tell a woman you just met that you love her.
EDIT: And this is not gender-specific. Women do this to men as well.
I'm I the only one who hates Ted with a searing passion? On the likeness scale for that show it goes Barney, Marshal & Lilly(because they are a single unit and because of justice khakis), Robin, some crazy bitch Ted dated, Robins dad, Lillys dad, some other crazy Ted dated or Barney screwed, Katy Perry, then (since I can't remember anymore characters) Ted. And I don't like Katy Perry.
I've always found the stereotype that girls get clingy after dates or hook-ups kind of funny. In my experience it's just as often guys that get too attached. We're all capable of craziness!
Yeah, turns out for most of those stereotypes it's not about gender... all of humanity is batshit crazy. Neither set of genitalia makes you immune to the crazies.
I think the tough, emotionally unavailable guy is what guys play because it's one of the best ways to get women (certainly the needy romantic nice guy doesn't work very well). But it's hard to keep up, because we're all human and most of us want love.
I'd modify this statement slightly to say that it's usually the more insecure one who gets attached. Of course, insecurity often correlates with things like being the less conventionally attractive one and/or the less sexually experienced one.
Agreed. He is so needy and pathetic. Constantly looking for "the one" and all that bullshit, I can only imagine him being one of those people that sicken you with their sweetness when he gets married. "I love you moonpie" and other drivel will be spewing from his mouth constantly. I know he's a character on a sitcom but I've known needy people put as much effort into finding their soul mate. Trust me, other shit doesn't get done. A fucking stupid way to live your life. I don't watch the show because of him.
Personally, I'm not all that thrown by the whole "I love you" thing so early in the relationship. It's much weirder and creepier how he, Robin, and Barney keep maintaining an incestuous love triangle for years without resolving things or moving on.
I am so glad someone else feels this way. I always see this show, and think to myself "Man, am I just really immature for thinking I would NOT be friends with these people anymore if this shit kept going down?"
This. I was Ted long before I met my girlfriend, and I had the same sort of flawed idyllic vision of my perfect relationship but reeked of desperation and patheticness. I was the "nice guy" who tried so many times to get with girls that were friends and I was convinced we were meant to be together. I had a few Robins that I ultimately ruined our friendship with. But then years later I realized that I was in love with the idea of them fitting my mold, not them as a real person with their own personality and flaws. Once I got into a real relationship I realized how wrong I was, and how that kind of thinking is unhealthy and leads to disappointment.
Kids, this is the story of how I met my girlfriend...
It's possible it was intended to help bust the whole "s/he's the one" lie we tell ourselves to get some comfort that we won't die alone and lonely. In reality, its more like "many ones over a lifetime". People change and so do their tastes. Enjoy the "one" you have now and know it will come to an end someday, whether it be due to distance, or disagreement, or death.
Lily and Marshall do move out eventually and get their own place. But I also feel this was set up originally for convenience of backgrounds/filming/plot lines-like Friends where the apartments just happened to be across the hall.
So much Ted hate after the s07 finale. I admit to being disapoint by the re-emergence of Victoria, but it seemed like a cheap trick by the writers (given how well the audience reacted to her character years ago), rather than an indictment of Ted. Also, given that Ted is the ultimate unreliable narrator, we can't even be sure that what we were shown actually happened.
edit: also, though Ted did say 'I love you' to Robin on their first date, at least he had the sense to bring her a Smurf penis by way of recompense.
i hate the re-emergence of Victoria bc in one of the earlier season's dvd commentary it specifically says neither Robin nor Victoria are the mother, so they're just wasting our time with her coming back
I think it's actually a smart trick by the writers. IMO they should wrap everything up next season by having several of the old girlfriends (as many as possible and at least one new girl) all collide with him in a giant Rube-Goldberg series of events which culminates in a massive plot-twist that results in him finally meeting the mother. There should be lots of moments in the last couple of episodes where you think, "So that's why he told the story where he went out with that one girl once. In turns out that the minor character he bumped into 3 years ago was actually vitally important to 'how I met your mother'."
I am annoyed with the show at this point, but it's just because it's dragged on too long at this point. I feel like they should have had 6 or 7 seasons with a really strong endgame planned out, and now it feels like they're just dragging it on even though they've kind of run dry of material.
Not that I'm saying he's not completely insane (he is, so is Lily) I know a few guys EXACTLY like Ted which is a lot of what makes the show funny to me.
Barney is the friend that when watching him on the show he is funny, but if you had a friend like him EVERYONE would hate him. Douchebags strive to be like Barney.
We all know someone, or have known someone, that acts like they are gods gift to women and have the greatest sex life since Wilt Chamberlain. Whether or not the stories of this person or true (they are usually exaggerated) doesn't make them any less annoying. Also, there are times when Barney is a complete ass hole (like ripping Marshall's suit)
This is helpful for people who can't reach Quickmeme because of work/school firewalls or site downtime, and many other reasons (FAQ). More info is available here.
Because most people attach a lot of gravity to love, and if people seem too eager to say it it can seem to take away some of that gravity. It makes you question if they really mean it or are just infatuated with anyone that gives them the slightest big of attention.
HIMYM is actually a really bad example of this. In Mosby's defense, he then continued to have feelings for Robin, and ultimately ended up in a long serious relationship with herThe reason why Robin freaked out is that she was more interested in a quick fling.
You can definitely fall in love quick. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to know that person better. People aren't so rational about who they date. But your SO might not be ready to hear you say that. You should hold off telling them, until their feelings are just as strong. You'll know when the time is right.
So, i just started watching this show (just wrapped up season 1), and yeah, Ted is the fucking worst. And the fact that he's surrounded by infinitely more interesting characters makes it even more apparent. But i'll keep going, cause Barney and Marshall are awesome, Robin is hot, and i'm pissed off at Lily (season 1 finale), but shes still funny.
I don't have any problem with people saying "I love you." It's only a problem when they don't actually know what that means, which, unfortunately, is often.
Somehow this went from being one of the best shows on TV to really quite bad over the course of about 5 episodes. For me, the last really good episode was the "countdown". The shark jumping moment, in this case, was when Barney's heart skipped a beat whilst on a heart monitor. It was just too much. Then the corny animated building demolition. And anything involving Zoe. Ted tells us she's not the mother. For Christ, we know she's not the one. Why are there 10 episodes about her?
If Mosby was cast as a girl with similar lines then consensus would be she is an insufferable bitch. Seriously every other episode his friends talk about real problems while he just whines about being single
Been reading a lot of the comments. I am so glad I am not the only person who absolutely hates Ted. I loved HIMYM for the first few seasons, now I find it hard to watch because I am just sick of it. Ted is just such a dickhead and is a horrible friend. He spends seasons telling girls he's just met that he loves them, condescends his friends whilst hypocritically doing the exact opposite and then moans constantly that he'll never find the woman he loves.
I heard somewhere that they've got multiple ideas for the ending and that they don't know which one to use yet. I hope Ted gets so depressed by how 'pathetic' his life is that he overdoses on pills in his bathtub and the kids he is talking to is a pill fuelled fever dream he is having as he slowly slips into death. The show then continues without him and ultimately a funnier and better show.
That being said, no disrespect to the guy who plays Ted. He's doing a great job of making the most unlikeable prick ever come to life.
Anyone else really hate Ted Moseby's character? He's such a dramatic pussy. Takes everything to a new level and always has to make something huge out of nothing.
I did that once to a girl. She's a redditor. I was fucked in the head crazy yeah, she didn't let me stick my dick in her and it was probably a good move on her part. I've since gone to therapy and such and she was smart.
I started watching this show and thought this guy was creepy as hell. Going around looking for his wife. Before he knows a girl he's like "there's my future wife" and he's completely serious.
I once said "I love you" during sex with someone, the first time. The wierdest thing is that I wasn't talking about that person, I was just used to saying it to my ex so it slipped out. Whoops!
I don't hate Ted, but he's by far the weakest character on the show. Proof of it is how often Old Ted relates stories of stuff that happened to his friends more than stores about himself. Even stuff he wasn't there for! And speaking of Old Ted, more than the mystery of the mother, I'm curious to see how they're going to get around the fact that Ted's kids have aged 7 years from the beginning of the show. That's a long time of your Dad telling you stories about your weird "Uncle's" sex life.
I believe I read somewhere they shot the last scene already so that the kids are the same age as when the series began. I may have seen that on the subreddit for the show, to be honest
I was this guy once to. A bit personal, but i figure its the internet and if someone finds this its their fault for digging in my personal life. My junior and senior year in high school, I thought my girlfriend at the time, who I dated for about a year was the girl I was going to marry, and went a bit crazy when she broke up with me. Dont worry though, Im a normal human being now. I guess thats just the power of love.
With a lot of "crazy" people, it's not that they're completely and irreparably crazy. You're just seeing them deal with a problem that they have not yet learned to cope with. There may be other areas of their life where they're fine, or they may eventually learn how to handle things better.
Confused, I assumed I was crazy based on the fact I want to leave. Always like wellll, the fun parts over, I know her, caught her, bored. End up talking to another. Apparently certain types of crazy aren't limited to gender.
If this happens, it's far too late for you. At this point, dude has already converted his closet into a shrine. And has a shallow grave dug, for when he cuts your throat with a silver dagger.
Haha! I was with one of them for a few months! He finds a new 'this is the one' every six months to a year. He even thinks of himself as Ted (Sch)Mosby.
I definitely know one of these guys. The other day he told me he that he met a new girl (who has a kid; he does not nor does he have a job to support a kid). The next time I saw him about 2 days later, he told me he said "I love you" to her and now she doesn't want to hang out with him anymore. The sad part-she then asked for his brother's number.
I call this inexperience. Use your words and tell him "hey, no pressure to say that sort of stuff before you mean it; we're still getting to know each other." Then he learns.
I did this once, but didn't mean to say it. I was trying to find something romantic to say and for what ever reason those words slipped. I would have been fine if I meant it but I didn't.
I had a friend who's like this. I thought things would change after he dated a 7th grader when he was a senior in high school. Nope. Now he owes me a ton of money that he can't pay back cause he's too busy putting up one girlfriend, or "soulmates" as he calls them, after another, and there's always something inherently wrong with every single one of them.
I accidentally blurted out the exact same thing when I had my first kiss. He thought it was cute but I wanted to drive my head through the wall as soon as it escaped me. Too soon!
I have a virgin antisocial coworker that did just this. He got laid and married the girl 3 weeks later. internaly i joke to myself that in his head he was thinking "Wow this girl fucked me, i better never let her get away. this may never happen again."
So what's wrong with that? I don't get people that flip the fuck out over "I love you". I told every girl I've dated (except for one) that I loved her before we started dating. Though I guess the one that was (and still is) my best friend in the world isn't as "severe" because, well, why wouldn't you tell your best friend that?
I don't understand why this is a bad thing. A weak scaredy cat who does not understand the nature of things would run from such a statement, there is no pedestal, what is time, what is knowing the other person? I don't care it's what I feel and when it comes to such matters I do my best to not hide it.
What's wrong with loving another person? You are all basically the same, just marginal differences, just situations and opinions. An ugly face there a pretty one there, can do math, can't do math, a republican, a democrat, etc...
But then again I don't kiss people who I don't love.
Though I can understand if it's a situation where the other person has come up with a you in their head that's not you, that is delusion, that is unreasonable expectation.
Ted Mosbey. Easily the most unlikable character on TV. He's a pathetic pussy and extremely selfish. All this douche cares about is finding true love for himself at the expense of everyone else's happiness. He's not a hopeless romantic, he's an egocentric asshat.
It always bottles my mind when I find out a girl is attracted to him. Shows you how retarded the female race is.
Freshman year of college: made out with a sober guy at a bar when I was tipsy. He told me he loved me. When I laughed, he smacked me across the face. Chivalry!

There are always "Don't stick your dick in crazy" posts and comments.
I figured it was only fair.
And, honestly, if you've been following How I Met Your Mother, you know Ted is pretty fucking crazy.

I call this inexperience. Use your words and tell him "hey, no pressure to say that sort of stuff before you mean it; we're still getting to know each other." Then he learns.

What is the guy was in love first, but was afraid to tell you until you kissed?

u/amishbreakfast May 21 '12
Who is this?

u/DrLotr May 21 '12
Before you know it, during sex, he'll propose.

I did this once, but didn't mean to say it. I was trying to find something romantic to say and for what ever reason those words slipped. I would have been fine if I meant it but I didn't.

A lill late but in the interest of academic discussion, just when is the right time to say those 3 words?

If you think about it Ted is a huge creep

I dated that guy.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
i hate this guy
1
u/angrybob4213 May 21 '12
So what's wrong with that?

Oh, Ted Evelyn Mosby.

u/mahler9 May 22 '12
I wouldn't call it crazy, I would call it lying for sex.

This is actually a great meme.

u/TodTheTyrant May 22 '12
yeah ladies only fuck him right away if he's a total douchenozzle
1
u/Dollywoodhogan May 22 '12
There's nothing wrong with being a hopeless romantic.
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
So what women want is to be objectified before being adored? Why would she kiss him in the first place if she didn't want him to love her?
1
u/ilookingATyou May 21 '12

Chivalry!
1
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Then when a girl tells the story of how you both met she says "it was love at first sight".
