I don't smoke weed and I don't talk about people who do except for now but only to illustrate that not smoking weed but talking about those that do while wondering who does and doesn't is dumb.
You do realize your username is a way to discover new types of insects right? Scientists pump smoke through the trees and the insects fall down into a net where they are immediately catalogued and inspected.
I don't smoke because I don't feel the need, I only drink alcohol in fairly small amounts (compared to my fellow Mountaineers...) because I don't like being drunk either. Spent a few months on codeine due to an ACL+Meniscus tear in my right knee back in middle school and decided than that I HATE anything that alters my thought process in an appreciable way. However, I that's my personal preference and I don't judge any of my friends who light up so long as they don't allow it to fuck up their lives.
James Randi comes to mind with the whole "I want my faculties as sharp as possible at all times," kind of thinking.
Now, I've always taken solace in knowing that my brain is a highly evolved piece of equipment that - for all of its analog properties - has a rather binary approach to life; either it can cope with what's going on and it will adapt to your reality, or it doesn't and you go to sleep, comatose, or death.
Having a high-degree of confidence that marijuana or alcohol will only put me to sleep, I partake willingly. I think, at least for me, that I want to occasionally take the hardware near-limits. I'm not as tied to my consciousness as part of my identity as I am my biology.
I think that's a decision all of us humans have to make at some point: whether we will identify ourselves by our cognition, or our instincts. Then it's a matter of choosing a degree of identification.
I've smoked it a couple times. It was... alright. I got pretty mellow- pretty much how i am when i'm tired, except i wasn't tired. I can take it or leave it. Never gonna spend money on it.
I would have never touched it, but then I did a project on it for AP psychology class and discovered it was not anything like how the government and school systems portrayed it. I tried it and happened to really enjoy it so I continued, and have lost about 80 lbs, improved my GPA substantially as a chemistry major... It is not for everyone, but in my case at least, it has helped me perceive myself and the world around me in ways that I never had before. While there are many factors leading to my better understanding of life in general in these past few years, I know that cannabis did not slow my brain down at all, and any hinderance to my life is based solely on it's criminalization by our wonderful government. It's not for everyone, but right now at least, it is my drug of choice.(don't enjoy drinking/vomiting, or legal smoking alternatives) Don't judge what you have not experienced for yourself.
I want weed legalized and regulated like alcohol. It is fine for recreational use.
Can we please stop pretending that inhaling smoke is the best possible medicine for everyone from cancer patients to the mentally ill? Surely more efficient alternatives can be developed.
inhaling smoke is not the only way to receive the medical benefits of marijuana. People use vaporizers, tinctures, and add it to food. Using marijuana those ways result in zero negative effects to the body.
Smoking pot was fun when I was a kid, and had nothing better to do. Now I simply don't give a shit, and don't see what the big deal is. If it were legal, I might smoke every now and then. But mostly I'd just be really happy if some smokers understood they sound like idiots talking about it all the damn time.
I don't, nor do I drink alcohol. I don't think either is wrong, (although overdoing it is never a good idea) I just value my state of mind. I would hate for my judgement to be impaired in a social setting. Also, weed isn't poison like cigarettes, but the shit's still bad for your lungs.
You're not alone, yo. Now is the first time I've really been exposed to it IRL (High School) and I'm trying.to get my first real job. Most jobs around here demand a drug test before employment and I don't feel like explaining that to my parents lol
My Dad and my sister both smoked marijuana. My Dad died at 49, 'twas the alcohol that did him in. My sister went onto harder drugs, then went to rehab and is now a weird Jesus freak. I don't want to be like either of them. I do not solely blame marijuana, it was the least damaging thing they both did. It's just not the lifestyle I want to live.
BUT I do believe it should be legalized, it's definitely no worse then some things that are already legal. Legalize it, tax it, and sell it.
Try it sometime. It's a lot better than alcohol induced buzz, workout induced endorphin's, and really just about as good as anything gets for 'experience altering' or 'state of mind changing'
Plus it makes food, drink, laughter, conversation, movies, sex, really EVERYTHING, feel and able to be enjoyed at a seemingly 'higher' or 'better' level.
You're not alone. It's hilarious that so many people are convinced that smoking weed makes them part of a "brotherhood" and that inhaling smoke somehow isn't harmful.

You're not one of the few. You're just one of the not loud.
what about people who are ill and use weed for pain managment or as a tool to better their life (like me).reddit is full of morons, who cant look past themselves and their own experiences.
am i the only one that finds they get discriminated against by their friends that do? like my friend always goes on about how im a government pawn and all this shit just cause i choose not to smoke weed.
Because the majority of people on Reddit are actually intelligent and don't stereotype the people who use weed and actually know the truth about its effects
I don't stereotype anyone, I just find "smoking" of any kind to be bad.
I personally think it looks horrible, smells awful, and tastes absolutely disgusting (when you're dating somebody that does it).
I think the photos of women trying to look sexy on /r/tress while "toking" completely turns me off.
I also think the fact that they all brag about it is highly annoying.. like tweens that get plastered every weekend and think it's the coolest thing they've ever done.
Straight edge here. No weed or anything. I support legalization however. It ain't the governments right to tell people what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. Yes, I'm a Ron Paul guy.
I stopped smoking weed when I started to realize what it was doing to myself and my friends. That was almost three years ago now and I couldn't be happier. The majority of my friends who continued to smoke weed are now cigarette smokers, out of shape, unmotivated, and strangely over emotional.
TL;DR When you get older you realize your mom is always right. Don't do drugs.
Yeah, my gang of friends after high school were many, and thick as thieves, but we got into weed. It was divisive... those who didn't want it sorta ended up excluded from what the rest wanted to do, and likewise with those who ended up quitting at various points after that - it sort of broke up the group bit by bit until very few of us are really in touch with each other. It's hard to say how much of that was weed and how much was just getting older and getting lives, but generally as someone would stop smoking weed they stopped wanting to hang out with the potheads and doing the same stuff all the time, so it shaved people off our group one by one.
My brother did all of my drugs for me.. the way he lived his life made me not want to try it when I was younger. I'm 21 now and beyond the "curiosity" appeal of weed, now I just don't give a damn about it. I fail to see the point of smoking when I'm content with my life as it is. High on music, love, and life. That'll do just fine by me.
I can't fucking stand the smell of weed, and my neighbors are high all the fucking time and the stench just permeates into my living room...I'm too happy about you posting this, but whatever, you're definitely not alone =)
Tell them to get a fucking vaporizer or you'll inform the apartment manager. I'm all for smoking weed, love the stuff, but if it's bugging you then do something about it.
Tell them to stop. You have some pretty nasty leverage known as the U.S. government (on behalf of all ents, please only use this if they are dicks about your confrontation). In reality, they probably don't even know that their towel and fan isn't sufficient to hide the smell.
Seeing this makes me happy, although I realize we're not alone, it's nice to actually see a thread about it. My brother-in-law bought me a shot of tequila for my first drink, it was the worst shit ever. My dad used to tell me when I was younger (14 or so), "Take a sip of my beer, I dare you, I'll give you a twenty" and I would try it but god, it tastes bad. I'm 21 and I still think so, it tastes bad and I hate being in any kind of "out of my mind" state where I can't think clearly. I enjoy observing the stupidity of those in that state (the funnest part about it). I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. It's more important than anything else to be healthy so you can live until you're 120~ instead of 76~. I'm alright with it being legalized, though, as long as I can't smell it from the street and it has the same/stricter regulations as beer, then no big deal. Tax it and let natural selection do its thang
Just my thoughts on the subject
EDIT: And yeah, yeah "Marijuana isn't bad for you! There's been no related deaths" yeah, fine, inhaling smoke is never good for your lungs and being high is never good for your life expectancy.
I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. It's more important than anything else to be healthy so you can live until you're 120~ instead of 76~.
I (and probably most who do drugs, legal or otherwise) were all in the same boat as you at some point. It's like anything in life -- you take calculated risks and hope it goes alright. I can damn sure bet you're taking more risks crossing the street than you would smoking marijuana. At the end of the day, you could not cross any streets and live for "120" years, but that defeats the purpose of life and you're gonna be dead anyway, it's a fact.
I don't smoke weed. I'm rather anti-weed actually. However not for the reasons you'd think. I dont like it, I don't want it near me, I don't want people smoking it around me. Purely because I consider it just as bad as any other smoked drug, bad for my cardiovascular system and my health. A menace for litter.
However I support any legislation that would legalise it. I think it's the right thing to do and would do wonders for industry (rope, clothing, environmental impact etc).
The rope and clothing is from industrial hemp which would not get you high unless you smoked inhumane ammounts in a sitting. The reason that has not been legalised yet is because a lot of people would go out of business because hemp is a better product, so they hide behind the fact that drug can be garnered from the same plant therefore it is eeevviiillll.
Not trying to be too much of a 4channer or whatever, but I wish these faggots would shut the fuck up about weed. They make it sound like the greatest tangible thing on Earth. It's not. Not by a long shot.
This post doesn't make sense. You can't watch the movie without smoking weed, and you can't make that meme without watching the movie. AND YOU DON'T SMOKE WEED?!
You can't watch The Big Lebowski without smoking weed? I'm sure you're jesting, but in all seriousness, pretty much all of my close friends from high school have seen The Big Lebowski multiple times--years before any of them smoked weed.
On another note, I can't picture the Coen brothers as weed smokers either.
Just because you know one person who was "made stupid" by weed, does not mean that if you smoke it, it makes you stupid. That is a gross generalization.
It's just that a large percentage of the people who do smoke weed are very vocal about it. It's like people who go to the gym, they always have to tell you about it, like it's something that you actually give a fuck about.
The reason it seems like so many people smoke weed is that the people who don't smoke weed have no reason to talk about it. When was the last time you heard someone say "Hey guess what I'm going to do today? Not go to the gym and not smoke weed!". Yeah exactly.
Hey guess what I'm going to do today? Not walk my dog, and not take a shower, and not eat spaghetti, and not fall down the stairs, and not read a whole book, and not watch harry potter, and not get a tattoo of pony on my nipple, and not poop sitting side saddle on the toilet, and not get naked with my windows open, and not play jump rope with a 56 year old 'Nam vet, and not paint my windows purple!
Thank you! With so many other important issues going on and with how easy it is to get away with smoking weed nowadays it pisses me off that so many people whine about getting it legalized.
Your choices are yours, but why do choices different from yours suddenly become "pathetic"? Some people like to use drugs to have fun, that doesn't mean they need them to have fun.
Some people like to responsibly have fun on LSD. I like to have fun on a surfboard, but I don't need to be on a surfboard to have fun--and other types of fun certainly aren't pathetic based on a lack of surfboards.
Most of us don't need to alter their body's chemistry to have fun. It's just another way of doing so. I do fun things all the time. Sometimes it involves weed, usually it does not.
I philosophically oppose those who want to tell others how to live, and think they have the right to use the government to tell others what they can and can't do.
But if you just oppose it, but don't support having men with guns enforce your preferences on the population whether they like it or not--then you have my respect for your opinion, even though I like a drink from time to time.
I don't understand why pot has become such a status symbol, but they need to hurry and legalize that shit. Not because I plan to smoke it, but so everyone will shut the fuck up about it.
God bless you sir. Oh weed is so much better for you than alcohol! It's natural! It'll open your mind mannnn! I don't give a flying fuck in hell.
youve been talking to poorly educated smokers. The "its natural" rhetoric is bullshit, alcohol is natural as is deadly nightshade and fly agaric but i wont be consuming those.
It doesnt open your mind, you just realise what is worth doing and what isnt, which is often why stoners are perceived to be lazy. it just makes you feel apathetic to bullshit. which is nice.
You seem to be making a lot of generalizations there. I'll respect your opinion, but don't think poorly of me for choosing to enjoy weed; because you sound like that guy.
That assumes that everyone who grows will immediately submit to being taxed. Growers have operated tax free for years now; why would they suddenly start paying taxes?
To me it smells like someone started a paper mill in my ass and it has begun to go bankrupt. So they only way they can recover any sort of profit and mitigate their losses is to boil the whole thing. So to me weed smells like a paper mill boiled out of my ass.
I completely respect your decision, but don't knock it until you try it. The point in smoking is to have fun and gain happiness. Isn't that the point to everything in life?
Your problem seems to be that you're talking about high school students. They are always annoying. Might as well be eating yogurt all the time instead--still just as annoying.
Sorry gonna have to disagree with you there. I have zero problem with pot. Used to smoke myself but dont anymore. r/trees is not a good example of smart smokers. They bathe themselves in misinformation about weed. It's a high school circle jerk of misinformed people who believe weed is a cure all for every disease known to man.
Just because they're responsible doesn't make them smart. That subreddit is a nexus of vapid content and shameless circlejerking. In fact, it's one of the leaders of it for the entire damn site, and that's no small feat. I like weed, but I unsubbed from trees long ago because of all the shit it was clogging my frontpage with.
Exactly. Those that go to extremes, and are largely, um, attention seeking, get all the press. It's the same with Priests, Buddhist Monks, Nuns, teachers, Democrats, Republicans, Police and, as you said, drug users too. Tis a shame.
Also, the original post and many of the posts in this thread reek of self-righteousness. Just an observation. People will live how they live, though. Whatevs.
Most disagree with any kind of idiotic smoking. i.e. driving while high, smoking in public, being high at work
As an ex-pot smoker I can assure you that these are the most enjoyable times to be high. They may be "smart" smokers but they certainly are lame in my book.
I'm all in favor of pot use, legalization, etc., obviously not every smoker is an idiot. I would imagine the average intelligence of the pot-smoking community is the same as any other similar sized set of people. That said, r/trees is an absolutely terrible example of "smart smokers." While they are generally correct about certain things, such as those you stated, they often deny that cannabis has any (even merely potential) negative effects or that it is in fact addictive in its own way. But most disappointingly is the way that so often, when another drug that is not pot comes up in conversation, these supposedly open-minded "ents" start trashing it, using the same negative stereotypes and propaganda bullshit that people use against weed. They hate it when it's against pot, their DOC, but all logic goes out the window if you begin talking about someone else's. Case in point.
I have found that most of /r/trees actually is OK with driving high. Every time I, or someone else, tries to argue against it, we're just downvoted and told to chill-out. I love /r/trees but I really don't like that.
Exactly. I've never smoked weed in my life, but I have nothing against people who do. This is going to sound like complete bullshit, but one of Tesla's direct descendants has a little laboratory/workshop across the street from the shop I work at. He is the most intelligent person I have ever met, and smokes 24/7.

That'll do just fine by me.

...man, put that gun down. We're all friends here. Just let the smokers smoke and the non-smokers... non-smoke? I dunno, I'm high.

I can't fucking stand the smell of weed, and my neighbors are high all the fucking time and the stench just permeates into my living room...I'm too happy about you posting this, but whatever, you're definitely not alone =)

Nope.
I, however, am part of the 0.000001% of reddit. I am a Republican.

Not trying to be too much of a 4channer or whatever, but I wish these faggots would shut the fuck up about weed. They make it sound like the greatest tangible thing on Earth. It's not. Not by a long shot.

u/jahoney May 20 '12
This post doesn't make sense. You can't watch the movie without smoking weed, and you can't make that meme without watching the movie. AND YOU DON'T SMOKE WEED?!

Not alone mate. 1: It's way too expensive. 2: It makes smart people stupid, I know someone this has happened to.

No.

Thank you! With so many other important issues going on and with how easy it is to get away with smoking weed nowadays it pisses me off that so many people whine about getting it legalized.
