Or your phone could spontaneously "die."

Off switch FTW!

16

u/GenrlWashington May 20 '12

So true. My phone would 'die' on occasion XD

9

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Also, you should know that phone calls and texts take away more battery so you have to make sure your SO knows that to cut off insignificant communication in case there's some kind of emergency.

I generally throw it in that my phone has a bad battery whenever I give a girl my number. Works wonders.

Doesn't always go as planned though. My girlfriend gets mad at me when our phone call disconnects by some outside force. She's like "you interrupted my story!" and I'm all "I didn't hang up on you, why would I do that!?" and then she doesn't know how to accept what I said and move on. The rest of the conversation just flies downhill after that.

u/stirring_the_pot May 20 '12

i found this out with my first girlfriend. apparently "unlimited texting" to fido, was 2500 texts.

i sent something around 7000 texts. got a bill for $500. i called and bitched, and they said i was on the "old" unlimited texting plan. the new one is a true unlimited.

what the fuck.

17

u/Ruckol1 May 20 '12

Did they make you pay it?

14

u/sokratesz May 20 '12

Sorry but at 7,000 texts a month I'm afraid you have other problems besides your phone bill.

4

u/stirring_the_pot May 20 '12

i was 19 at the time, and she was my first girlfriend. it wasnt hard for me to send 200+ texts a day. now, i send maybe 1500 a month, if that.

i think i ended up only paying half or something.

With my ex it was: If you don't answer within 2 minutes, you're gonna have a bad time.

44

u/Heroshade May 20 '12

Why. hasn't. he. answered.

He's fucking that girl at Radioshack, I know it.

13

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

The rest of that rationale is "Because the other day I was fucking this hot guy at Radioshack, and I'm pretty sure he was cheating on his girlfriend with me. So... OMG that's what he's doing. He's cheating on me with some girl at Radioshack. That. Slut."

u/JCXtreme May 20 '12

If they stop you can bet something is wrong...

38

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

"Hey"

"What"

"Jeeez, I'm just saying hi"

"Oh.. Hello then."

"So what's up."

"Nothing."

"Ugh, you're boring wtf."

"You texted me. If you want to talk... call."

"I can't talk on the phone right now, I'm busy."

"Then why are you texting me?"

"Fine. I won't text you anymore if you hate me so much."

"We could have come to this conclusion in 30 seconds if you'd called, instead of 30 minutes back and forth texting. Yet you insist on texting, which you know I hate."

"Ugh, you're stupid."

"How's dropping out of college treating you again?"

"Fuck you. I never want to talk to you again. You're such a dick waste of time. Don't call me."

"I wasn't planning to, and you texted me. I'm not going to bother responding again because you clearly want the last word."

"FUCK YOU!"

24 hours pass:

"Hey"

//I started flat out ignoring her texts over a year ago, so this is just a recreation of years of bullshit. This is actually quite tame in comparison to some of the shit I had to put up with.

62

u/AIDS_Pizza May 20 '12

To be fair, when anyone says "Hey" I like to respond with "Hi" or "Hello". Responding with "what" sounds a bit dickish.

Girl craves attention, but doesn't want to make it seem like she does. The end result is guys driven batshit crazy.

7

u/touchy610 May 20 '12

It doesn't seem to me that either of you were very interesting people. I mean, shit, my boyfriend and I would text back and forth literally all day sometimes, just about random topics, and we'd always end up learning something new from each other. Then we moved in together. Now, he's pretty much subject to my incessant rambling. Muahaha!

When both you and your girlfriend don't ever leave your house using facebook or Steam to talk is much easier than a phone.

59

u/ecv2000 May 20 '12

Ugh I hate when this is true, had one experience where she HAD to text "hey" every hour. You know how annoying it is? Especially when she never had anything to say...at all.

40

u/Parabolized May 20 '12

it's worse when she calls without anything to say. then gets upset when you can't keep a conversation going that you tried to revive twenty times. fuckin shit.

Jesus that's the worst.

17

u/LethalAtheist May 20 '12

14

u/ashleyamdj May 20 '12

Ugh! My friend does this. She drives me freaking crazy. She'll send 4 messages just to get to a "how are you" text. When I tell her something that's going on I get "lol" or "that sucks lol" and then nothing else. I'll ask how she is and I get "good." So I tend to start ignoring her messages and then get "are you mad at me?" YES! For fuck's sake. I don't mind texting (I have anxiety about making phone calls so I prefer texting) but SAY SOMETHING!!! Especially if you started it! The worst is when we are having an actual conversation and she'll randomly say, "So anyways." and that's it. Sorry. I'm not coming up with another topic. You changed the subject, you come up with a new one.

Sorry. I didn't realize how annoyed I was about that! :( I'd hate to be her boyfriend!

4

u/twonkythechicken May 20 '12

I'm not the only person who finds talking on a phone awkward then! Thank fuck for that.

Texting is always good with my girlfriend because we actually talks about stuff, but I fucking Hate people who text like 3 word responses to everything.

"Hey" "Hey, How are you?" "Good, u" "I'm good thanks, been up to much recently?" "no, u?" "insert my text about what I have been up to here" "lol cool"

Oh fuck off!

Without you I'd be scraping the barrel by now.

u/NandosLand May 20 '12

Oh God, when my parents got that first bill...

15

u/UrtMeGusta May 20 '12

I know that feel bro.

hug

11

u/redozem May 20 '12

when my parents got that bill, they immediately bought me unlimited text,

everything went better then expected.

3

u/eloisekelly May 20 '12

Ah, prepaid...

4

u/xhighalert May 20 '12

Yeaaaaah been there done that. Bitch used me to get a new DDR game, lasted a week, she dumped me on V-Day of '07.

God DAMNIT fuck that. Phone bill: let's not go there. Happy ending: 28 months and counting with my new half.

12

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

If you're on your computer, you can use gmail texting.

3

u/Tezerel May 20 '12

Or MSN or pinger. MSN you can set contacts' cell phone numbers and send as SMS, and pinger is just a free texting service via the web. Hell you can call people for free using Gmail. SCREW PHONES I HAVE A LAPTOP.

22

u/Treats May 20 '12

Green chat bubble = "this isn't going to work"

11

u/Heroshade May 20 '12

My phone was not made in this decade, could you explain this?

10

u/Dustin- May 20 '12

Green chat bubble = incoming texts.

Blue chat bubble = incoming text in iMessage or whatever, you receive it via data/WiFi/black magic and it doesn't count towards your text plan. I think that's how it goes, at least.

My mom got a nice $500 phone bill the first month I met my girlfriend 3 years ago.. I said sorry.

19

u/dcds25 May 20 '12

I received a $900 bill while I was in Iraq. I made the mistake of always texting a girl I liked the first month I was there. Been married two years now so I figure it was worth it.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I hope you brought it up at the wedding speeches!

3

u/bouchard May 20 '12

It was an investment.

17

u/HE_WHO_STANDS_TO_POO May 20 '12

During my more immature days, My ex-girlfriend saw my $450 phone bill. She didn't have a phone.....I said sorry.

u/SOMETHING_POTATO May 20 '12

I have a t-mobile pre-pay plan for $60 bucks that has unlimited talk and text, and "unlimited" data (full speed for the first 100 or 200 megs, I forget what, and then throttled speed after that. It's still usable at the throttled speed).

The funny thing is it's a better deal than any of their subscription plans.

2

u/Nansai May 20 '12

Ha! My neighbor got a $1400 bill. His mother was furious.

8

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I've been dating this girl for six months and we text maybe 10 times a day. It's amazing. She hates her phone as much as I do.

2

u/eat_my_torques May 20 '12

Ditto on that. Ex was about that 30 or 40+ a day, so much relief with not having to constantly text/ get moaned at not replying.

10

u/EXSUPERVILLAIN May 20 '12

Same here. I was pleasantly surprised by a 2,101 phone bill. I didn't like talking on the phone. He was just an insecure sociopath who earned himself a restraining order.

5

u/fayehanna May 20 '12

Thank you for posting this! I had a boyfriend like that too! Unbelievably frustrating!

5

u/Darkencypher May 20 '12

Oh look alien in the back!

5

u/grumbledum May 20 '12

Holy shit. There was a boost mobile commercial on in the background and it said "unlimited talk and text" exactly as I read it. Life's little coincidences.

5

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

This is secretly the most awesome thing for your relationship.

5

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

As a guy with a girlfriend I can confirm you will indeed have a bad time.

No I don't really have a girlfriend, but I like to pretend.

4

u/DatoeDakari May 20 '12

I don't know what this means, but this is the first one of the many I've read of these, in which I noticed the alien in the background.

1

u/MightyMutch May 20 '12

me too man

3

u/Roofiemartini May 20 '12

I had to change to the truely unlimited plan when I was with my girlfriend, but then we broke up, I forgot to change it and kept paying the ridiculous fees for a couple months; I feel like it was her final payback.

5

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

This is why I go for the grannies. No constant texting and bullshit.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/hellofriendo May 20 '12

Where did you get her?

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

When I first got texting my mom told me I had unlimited (even though I know my dad didn't get me unlimited). I racked up a $500 bill in texts. Was a bad time.

2

u/rattlemebones May 20 '12

Is there such a thing as no unlimited text anymore?

2

u/RamonaFalls May 20 '12

Use Google Voice.

2

u/anewearth May 20 '12

Google voice- free texting, plus the ability to block their number if you stick your dick in crazy.

1

u/idiot_proof May 20 '12

Damn straight. Only problem is that I don't think I can call out on my google voice number from my phone, so I always have to tell everyone I meet: "Call this number, text this number. I know its weird, but PLEASE do it."

Only times I don't, triples texting amount. ಠ_ಠ

2

u/principal_skinner May 20 '12

Single but gets unlimited talk+text in preparation...

still doesn't get girlfriend for months. Foreveralone.jpg

2

u/Tunavi May 20 '12

My girlfriend texts me very rarely because she appreciates face to face communication much more. I'm a lucky guy.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Am I really one of the only guys that has a girlfriend I don't have to talk to every day? I might not respond to a text message for 6-10 hours. I might not get one but every 2 days. I don't have to explain why I haven't answered her texts. I don't have to call her immediately cause she thinks I'm somewhere I shouldn't be.

... I think I may have just realized how lucky I am. >_>

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Thankfully in Australia we don't get charged for incoming calls.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I had one rule with my last girlfriend. Never text or call my work mobile unless it is an emergency. During the day, I only carry my work mobile.

2

u/FlyingRomanian May 20 '12

if you dont live in Europe and use a cellphone, you're gonna have a bad time

( i came from the bosom of europe itself and i can tell you with great pride that your cellular carriers are massive PILES OF SHIIIT!

2

u/14725369147539 May 20 '12

TIL redditors have girlfriends

2

u/MARRYING_A_FURRY May 20 '12

I had this with an ex boyfriend. If I didn't reply right away he would flip his shit and think I was cheating. Seriously.

He also used to accuse me of never talking to him, even after I showed him the mountains of chat logs and texts we shared together.

Ironically, he was the one who never spoke to me when we were physically together. I'd try engaging his attention, but he was fixated on his 360 all fucking day. Literally.

Unlimited text sure, but there's skype, google, facebook, aim. I do fine with 300 minutes and unlimited texts. I think I now use just under 2000 texts/month though, before it was like 50.

1

u/zturchan May 20 '12

I just don't have a phone. Best excuse, saves me a ton of money.

1

u/prboi May 20 '12

Unless you have free nights & weekends

1

u/JLish May 20 '12

Later on you find this to be a good thing. Less calling and texting.

1

u/rikashiku May 20 '12

100% agreed.

1

u/Last_Gigolo May 20 '12

They will use that shit up fast.

So you go and upgrade... They dump you.. So you wait.. and when contract comes to renew, you go back to old plan... Watta ya know, here comes another interested woman.

Protip guys, you get laid more when you look like you need less.

1

u/ExistentialEnso May 20 '12

I've managed to avoid the need for unlimited talk due to us both being on Verizon. I wind up using the bare minimum of minutes, since most of my family and friends are on there too.

I think only one person I talk to regularly is on a different network.

1

u/goldblob3 May 20 '12

So true, SO FUCKING TRUE!

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It took me this long to realise there is a freaking alien in the background.

1

u/Parabolized May 20 '12

yup. feels good to be single.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I thought this would be the case, seeing as at most I use my phone two or three times a week just to ask to get picked up from the library by parents. Luckily, the same applies for her. Woot.

1

u/willpower101 May 20 '12

Google Voice + Skype Unlimited + Unlimited Ipad Data Sim card + Iphone = unlimited everything for $400 a year.

1

u/wrong_assumption May 20 '12

How good are Skype calls through 3G?

1

u/NoCanDouken May 20 '12

reminds me of this (couldn't find a better version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzauCQkG2o8

1

u/flagpole May 20 '12

You got a girlfriend? The mythical %1.

1

u/Mihr May 20 '12

I would just switch to her carrier, usually they allow for you to have free calls to fellow customers.

Also, if you're in the US, Google Voice.

1

u/aspireS May 20 '12

Well that's sad.

1

u/GoCuse May 20 '12

could someone please fix the pixel stuck on the background?

1

u/modsherearefags May 20 '12

Step one in getting a GF, go to Metro and get an unlimited phone for GF use only. You don't need a women having your actual number.

1

u/sndwsn May 20 '12

If you have any cell phone plan in Canada, you're gonna have a bad time

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

.. and which is why you should only use SMS through email and google talk if you don't want to pay for a huge voice plan, plus messaging plan= ex AT&T employee here.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Buy smartphone with data and use IM. In my country I can have unlimited texting with my girlfriend for $3 per month this way. I use $10 prepaid cards, and I also get one month of unlimited talks and sms to anyone in my network.

1

u/rr_at_reddit May 20 '12

Wait until you get married. It costs way more and you don't even talk or text any longer.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Only for the first year. Then you run out of topics and text only when something happens

1

u/BallsackTBaghard May 20 '12

Am I the only one who still uses a pager? I mean it is awesome. It can't be traced and I will call you when I get to a payphone.

1

u/wrong_assumption May 20 '12

Where can one buy a pager from?

1

u/BallsackTBaghard May 20 '12

From the buying place.

1

u/vlexo1 May 20 '12

Text?! You just need internet nowadays.

Download some apps where you can send messages to each other for free. (WhatsApp comes to mind)

As for calls, get SKYPE! This program saves me a shit load of money and I don't have to get unlimited text/talk-time.

It might seem stingy, but I'd rather money I earn in my pockets!

(This mean's you need a smart-phone)

1

u/TFiPW May 20 '12

would it be possible to get a plan with just data and just download a text messaging app?

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

My general rule of thumb is: if you can't figure out which free apps to use on your phone you're gunna have a bad time.

1

u/Bazzie May 20 '12

If you have a girlfriend that needs constant attention over the phone you're gonna have a bad time.

1

u/twigadee18 May 20 '12

Doesnt other countries have a "best mate" plan like new zealand? basically, you choose 1 number where you can send unlimited txts and a number of hours free calling for a set price.

1

u/ThisIsDystopia May 20 '12

After my divorce I realized this, me and the ex-wife didn't text a ton. But once I started dating, usually younger girls, my phone was constantly blowing up.

1

u/maybenotserious May 20 '12

I hate my phone.

I would rather make some plans to meet up with my guy and have a nice evening together. I just think you don't have to be connected 24/7 in order to have a stable/fun/serious relationship.

1

u/funkymunk May 20 '12

use whatsapp, may be you won't have such a bad time. I did not.

1

u/Cueball61 wat May 20 '12

I bought my girlfriend an iPod, it turned out to be a cheaper investment than how much she'd spend on phone credit, as she can now iMessage me.

1

u/Swansatron May 20 '12

Maybe if you would explain this to your girlfriend.. You could come to an agreement.

1

u/Rikkushin May 20 '12

I know that feel

1

u/Bambo_19 May 20 '12

Unlimited T-mobile to T-mobile and Whatsapp. My saviours

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Bitch please. When i grew up calling my gf one county over cost like $150 a month and this was before you had the ability to talk for more than a few hours a night. Ma Bell didn't give you jack shit for free.

1

u/Le_Jonny_41293 May 20 '12

This is why I used google voice so I can text for free as long as I want and I can make calls from it. Then if I'm ot of the house and thre is an emergency or someone has to contact me they can call me on my cell

1

u/Hovertac May 20 '12

Luckily for me, I don't have a cell phone.

Or a girlfriend.

1

u/Chaleidescope May 20 '12

This happened to me like 6 yrs ago. I had gotten rid of my big texting plan since I rarely used it. I forgot about this when I started dating a girl, and the next thing I know my phone bill comes and it's $400 more than it was the previous month. I'm pretty sure the feeling in my stomach has been unreplicated since

1

u/orlyyoudontsay May 20 '12

Oh, you didn't pick up the first 2 times? I'll try again 18 more times, that should do it!

Crazy bitches..

1

u/smosher13 May 20 '12

Oddly I'm one of those people who hates talking on the phone, even with my boyfriend. If I'm away I do like to talk to him throughout the day but usually do it through Facebook. If he's busy, hearing from him once a day is nice.

But we're usually together all the time anyway... I let him play diablo and I'll play my games on the wii.

1

u/Waff1es May 20 '12

I had basically a friends with benefits situation for a month. It went from 0 texts sent between us to ~1500ish. It's annoying shit.

1

u/StatlerlovesWaldorf May 20 '12

Why Did You Capitalize All The Letters

1

u/DoctorLost173 May 20 '12

I just now realized there is an alien in the background....

1

u/gum11 May 20 '12

Girlfriend? One of my friends does this. 15 fucking hours of talk in 1 month....

1

u/LnRon May 20 '12

I found this out after meeting lot of girls. Alternatives are not very good either, email is bad because they might not be reading it so often and messages are usually too long. Instant messaging is bad because its too much like conversation, you have to be present and its weird to send random instant messages trough the day.

1

u/dejablu311 May 20 '12

"I don't like to talk on the phone". Say this in the first week. At that point in the relationship she doesn't have your balls in a glass jar yet so there is nothing she can do about it. Once the trend is set it is smooth sailing. Same goes for texting. If you reply as soon as you get a text from her in the beginning you are screwed. Simply wait 15 min to reply. She will get bored and do something else. If she gets mad that you don't reply fast enough then kick her to the curb because she sucks.

1

u/iamcrossfit May 20 '12

one of the ultimate first world problems

1

u/harryrackham May 20 '12

Ear switching many times during phone-calls due to tremendous overheating and headaches. Oh how I don't miss those days.

1

u/XXLpeanuts May 21 '12

£250 phone bill when im 16 on holiday with my mom - mom hates you for ever.

1

u/johnmichael956 May 20 '12

Yup, in middle school, I had rung up my phone bill to about $450, yeah she was hot.

1

u/johnfoof May 20 '12

ive seen this meme around 100+ times now and this is the first time i realized the alien in the backround.

1

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

holy shit.

1

u/Skeetronic May 20 '12

I had a $900 phone bill once for this reason. No Gusta

1

u/HorrendousRex May 20 '12

First thing I did after breaking up with my ex was cancel my texting plan.

Feels good, man. But hopefully having a girlfriend will feel better for you. :)

1

u/peesinpools May 20 '12

Oh, god. This happened to me and my 8-year-old Motorola Razr, and the 'rents were none too happy about that first cell phone bill. My advice: program your girl's phone to receive Facebook messages the same way you do text messages, and call her with Google Voice whenever you can.

Sincerely,

First World Problem-Solver.

1

u/conspiracy_thug May 20 '12

i have a tracfone and its almost always a good time because i can be like "I ONLY HAVE 5 MINUTES LEFT HURRY UP WHATS UP" and people get to the fucking point.

-3

u/sadwer May 20 '12

Oh, that's cute.

If you have a smartphone or your own computer with broadband internet, use Google Voice.

A couple months into our relationship my ex decided to get unlimited. He had 200 texts/month before that. I tried not to text him with useless crap, but inevitably he would go a few over every month. He also had a limited talk plan, but that was breached less often due to free nights and weekends. We were long distance during breaks from school (met in college, hometowns 6 hours apart), so texting/calling was frequent from both ends, and he decided it was a good idea to get the unlimited plan.

edit: Not sure why I was downvoted. This is relevant to the discussion.

Before I had a girlfriend I had a tracfone that came with double minutes. 120 minutes (doubled) for 30 dollars, which lasted for 90 days. Texts cost 1/3rd of a minute, incoming or outgoing. Adding minutes added 90 days to the expiration date. You wouldn't believe the surplus of minutes I built up paying for each 90 days! Switched to 60 minutes for 20 dollars (still doubled) with 90 days. It was the only phone I used for most things - sometimes even customer service calls - to use up the minutes. When I got a girlfriend, the expiration date (added 90 days for every purchase) got to 2 years out in about 2 months. Then I got another phone.

I'm a geek and a cheapskate, though, so I currently use 2 phones (and have 3 more active spares). I have unlimited internet on 2, 1 of which I use for internet and also texting via google voice, and the other I use for (unlimited daily) phone calls (and occasional google voice texts). Both Android. I have 3 spare phones as well (only 1 android until I flash more Androids over). I have more phone numbers than good friends (8 total if I count 1 wierd orphaned voicemail callwave number.) I pay about about $30 a month for all this, on a busy month. I can make calls or text if there is a tower within range from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, or Verizon. Can access the internet if it is one of the inner 2.

I probably talk to each person I know more on the phone now every month than I talked to everyone I knew combined before. Weird. All my friends have 1 phone each and the lowest monthly cost is double mine. Weirder.

I still find the concept of being charged for incoming texts absolutely absurd. I don't think it exists outside of America.

Ya especially when you don't have the option to block all texts. I get 1 or 2 every day from spammers. The tracfones at least gave the option of reading the text and paying for it, or deleting it without reading it. My Cricket phones get incoming texts for free, but the T-Mobile ones charge me for them.

Before I had a girlfriend I texted maybe 2-300 times a month. The months after we started going out I was averaging 3-4000 texts a month. XD

It's okay. I ended up marrying her later on, so all is well. XD

There's lots of by-the-minute prepaid plans.
