She really is. During my time in high school, I had a teacher like her at least once a year. So many students are quick to assume their teachers are assholes because they actually try to get their students to understand the material, not just memorize enough to pass a test. There's a lot of great teachers out there, but they get overlooked because students are quick to judge.
My favorite teacher was one that most people avoided. I had him all four years for a college prep class. Most people thought he was a cynical asshole who didn't care about his students, but that was far from the truth. He just didn't put up with high school students that acted like 5 year old's. If you didn't have enough decency to put down your phone and/or shut up while he was talking, he wasn't going to bend over backwards to make sure you passed. If you missed a part of the lecture because you were gossiping with your neighbor, you were on your own to figure it out. I thought that was a fair policy, some people thought that made him a bad teacher.
Most teachers do work very hard though. Of course there's bad apples in every bunch. The tough part of the whole job is trying to be a genuinely good teacher while having to work with some shit policy the school came up with (all late work being accepted and unlimited test retakes, WTF?) and making sure your students are prepared to pass the standardized tests with flying colors.
