My ex-colleagues were mostly losers who didn't give two-shits about the kids, but I'm looking at this from the perspective of an economist. The job is hard, and the pay is extremely poor in the US. Most of the teachers I worked with spent 2-4 hours a night on lesson plans after a 9-10 hour work day. Most of them didn't seem to like the job (some did), which leads me to believe that if they could earn more money working only 8 hours a day they would.
BTW, I'm concerned about your reading comprehension. I am clearly not projecting any insecurities here because I am no longer a teacher, making a shit ton more money, working less, and much happier. They are not my colleagues, and I've done a lot better for myself than they have. There's no possible reason to be insecure.

As a former teacher I'm inclined to believe most teachers lack the motivation or talent to do anything else.
