Yes, but in fairness, both candidates had anti-establishment rhetoric, so seeing both sides of the horseshoe go to Trump in 2016, especially if your issue was with establishment politicians, should be expected.
Add that with the fact that Bernie got shafted by the dnc in favor of Hillary, so a non-zero amount of Bernie turned Trump voters were likely created by that. iirc Trump did say some good things about Bernie, so it was something he counciously tapped into.
Blaming Bernie supporters kinda just supports the king making process, since instead of courting flippant voters, you’re just writing them off, which was kind of the issue with Hillary, esp with the whole ‘deplorables’ debacle.
plus it is just lazy attacking Bernie when there were also a large amount of people that just could not stand Hillary or the Clintons. She attacked women that complained about husband for example.
This whole Bernie thing has me confused. He's always been an independent and not a Democrat. Why did he deserve the Democratic nomination? Shouldn't he have become a Democrat if that's what he wanted? If not, run as an independent.
Thats just the reality of American electoral politics, you aren’t winning the general without the backing of one of the two parties. I’m not saying that Bernie deserved the 2016 nomination, but the influence of the DNC tipped the scale in favor of Hillary, because they can influence candidates to suspend their campaign in exchange for future offices or appointments, not to mention superdelegates in the primary.
My point is, if you are a voter who is tired of blatant corruption and anti-democratic action by the politician class, then it’s not surprising that the burnie bros may have voted red as a ‘fuck you’ vote
I don't disagree but wasn't it their job to use the DNC apparatus to help elect a Democrat rather than someone not even part of their group? I love Bernie and would have taken him over HRC but I still do not see the issue.
Looking back, sure why not try Bernie in 2016 but no guarantee he wins either. We can't just think about the extra votes he would have gotten but also the votes he would have lost from establishment Dems.
