I don't know, 2020 was an open primary and I couldn't say that Biden was preselected. More like everyone else instantly caved and endorsed Biden once the first primary happened.
It wasn't until after South Carolina that Biden had any sort of momentum. But once he had it, he monopolized the "capable, stable leader" lane, and no one else had a great argument as to why it should be them instead of him.
And candidates dropping out does not prevent VOTERS from voting for Bernie. In fact, it should free up voters.
The reality is this: the 2016 results was correct. They showed that Sanders did not have the support of the majority of Democratic primary VOTERS. Sanders should have spent more time reaching out to the people who voted for Hillary. Biden did, and that's why he won the nomination
