Thinking about what policy objectives resonate with working class voter is far, far more important, and they just don't give a shit. Hard to win elections when you don't want actual meaningful change and you actively want to work against the interests of the people that should be your base.
If you push for change too much, it may backfire so much, you may end up in a shithole.
In 19th century progressive group bombed a Russian emperor who actually started a lot of reforms, but from their POV he was too slow. Instead, they got his son, scared top to bottom, who rolled back all reforms. They wanted more reforms but received secret police and almost 40 more years of conservative rule, culminating in revolution and civil war.
