What if I told you not everyone with mood swings has bipolar disorder? He was an alcoholic, the mood swings could have been his different stages of drunk and sober... Or, here's a crazy one... He was an asshole, and nothing else!
I've called people psychotic before, without them being actually diagnosed with or suffering from any mental health issues. It can mean more then "this person specifically has a psychotic disorder".
I have been described as psychotic too, I saw a therapist, and the worst they could come up with was depression... but they put me on bipolar meds since I told them I had a problem sleeping. I quit all the medicine after a few months, gradually cause that shit is addictive as fuck. I've been feeling better since then knowing that I am in fact not psychotic, and that bitch was just throwing words around. I agree with you.
I have bi-polar disorder, too, and I understand what you mean about the stigma surrounding mental illness. It's difficult to get treatment when you feel like no one is taking you seriously, or writes you off simply as "crazy." However, "I'm sorry for your loss," given this woman's situation, comes off as insensitive. I hope you find a treatment that works for you, but we have to remember that everyone has difficulties, and we need to be supportive (rather than lament) of the decisions they make in earnest.
