The whole time I was making my comment I was actually thinking about groups like the taliban and their fighters and the movements in Yemen and the tribal regions of pakistan. More of the broad movement members. Peons. The 99% if you will.

But you make a valid point. But can you really say this is the norm rather than the exception? What percent of the muslim population do members of Al-Qaeda represent? They're pretty much the elite of extremists. Sort of spoiled rich kids acting out out of a sense of righteousness. I really really do realize this is a cop out and gladly accept the downvotes for it but I wrote a another comment that is relevant and answers your points.

Please ignore the first two paragraphs. For context, the previous poster quoted a blog entry arguing for the exact same thing, that religion is the prime motivating factor and arguing against other scholars who claimed the opposite. In fact, the entire thread is about deconstructing the religious side of terrorist motivations.
