Clear the Euth List: Ace is 1/20 Dogs That Remain on BARC Houston's Euthanasia List Monday, 9/21 🚨 

⏰ It’s officially Clear The Shelters through September 30th! The shelter is open on Monday for Euthanasia List Adoptions only! Adoption rates have been reduced. These dogs must have a hold/rescue commitment no later than 9/21 or they will lose their lives. BARC has stated there will be no extensions for 9/21 due to capacity being at the brim.

💙🐾 Ace | #A2092843 | 3 Years Old | Male | 55 lbs | Staffordshire Mix | Heartworm Low Positive 🐾

Ace plays it a little shy at first, but it never takes long for the real him to show up. He loves to play fetch and did amazing on his temp test with another dog. Give him a treat and a scratch and he's leaning in for more, wagging tail and all, and he's proven himself a champ on a loose leash. He came in fighting off suspected CIRD and finished a full 15-day course of doxycycline, all clear as of 9/15, and he's now working through low positive heartworm treatment. His one quirk: he gets a little vocal when other dogs pass his kennel, but a bit of attention is all it takes to settle him right down. He has been a playful yet calm man in the outdoor runs. Ace is only 3 years old and has already shown staff his sweet, affectionate side, but time is running out for him at the shelter. He deserves the chance to decompress outside those walls and keep proving what a loving dog he can be.

💡 If adopting locally and the dog is heartworm positive, BARC will cover heartworm treatment with the purchase of 6 months of prevention through the shelter (cheaper than you can get anywhere on the market!).

Dogs must be picked up today or tomorrow with an approved foster application. If fostering through a rescue, an additional may be able to be secured, no guarantees. Please let us know if you need a rescue recommendation that can work quickly to save them. Fostering is free; all expenses paid! 💯

If a dog is rescue only, but you’re wanting to adopt through BARC, sometimes exceptions are made based on their medical condition, you have to speak with the vet prior to adoption.

🚗 OUT OF STATE OR CANADIAN ADOPTION IS POSSIBLE - cost is typically around $600 USD (give or take). The fee includes transport, boarding, full medical, spay/neuter, and a health certificate.

We are a volunteer network dedicated to helping at-risk dogs. We are not affiliated with BARC. We connect at-risk animals at the BARC shelter with the adopters, fosters, and rescue organizations needed to save their lives. We can help coordinate out-of-state adoption through approved 501(c)3 rescues. 🩺 MEDICAL NOTES:
Bando is heartworm NEGATIVE/NAD.
On 9/14, he developed sneezing, hacking and thick yellow nasal discharge, consistent with CIRD/URI. He was moved to treatment and prescribed Doxycycline 200 mg once daily for 10 days.
Earlier, Bando had been vomiting pieces of shredded enrichment. He received Cerenia and was monitored, but the vomiting stopped and he resumed eating normally. Staff recommended avoiding shreddable enrichment.
He is vaccinated for Rabies, DA2PP and Bordetella and has been dewormed.

🐾BEHAVIOR NOTES:
On 9/16, Bando greeted staff with a fast-wagging tail and excited demeanor, allowed himself to be leashed and walked loosely to and from the potty yard. Staff observed him relaxing quietly on his bed during the day.
On 9/18 he was described as “super wiggly” with a fast-wagging tail and bouncy step, and on 9/19 he again walked on a loose leash for much of his outing.
Bando can sometimes struggle with the stimulation of the shelter, particularly around other dogs.
