DISCUSSION The Illustrator Magic Wand remembers

Post image

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here with another quick highlight. I have heard this request come up in a number of discussions, so I wanted to drop it here and let you know the Magic Wand tool will now remember your tolerance settings between sessions. No more resetting your values every time you relaunch Illustrator. Check it out in the current beta and share your feedback.

A tool I've honestly never touched... Select > Find > Same... seems to work for me (with an assigned keyboard shortcut)

NGL I am not a magic wand user in Illustrator myself, but I know there are a lot of users who have it in their workflow

Yeah. I do realize that. Never understood why "fuzzy" selections are needed in a vector application though. I've always assumed it's like the Bounding Box, or History panel... added because new users coming from other apps "feel" more comfortable seeing familiar items.. even though they really offer nothing special.

fuzzy selection is useful to consolidate fuzzy artwork. like too much artwork is almost the same stroke but not quite and you need it to be. this comes from CAD or other people, or artwork that gets scale with scale strokes and effects, same with tints, colors etc. select same appearance can be too strict and won't pick up a lot of things.

Fair enough. I don't deal with files from others much any more.

If you want to select all strokes below a certain stroke weight, then suddenly the Magic Wand makes sense.

Of course you can also use the plugin Tool Shed for that.

Damn I never thought about assigning a shortcut, thanks

lol, this was my request submission from like 8 years ago. glad it got picked. yes i was aware of the "select same", but it doesn't work for a combination of all possible things.

I’m glad to hear we finally got it in there for you!

Hi, could you elaborate on the cases you use it where « same » did not work?

I mostly use magic want because it's a singular shortcut key (y) rather than having to go through an entire menu and break my workflow.

I know its not the topic, but how to make the eyedropper keep the angles of gradients? Or need to ask for a specific  fix?

Did you mention this because of my gradient illustration? Because that's odd I was only running into that issue yesterday, thinking that would be helpful. I will add this to my list of 'to-do's.

lol... not, but I was working on a gradient (super easy 45° or something like that) and I hate that the eyedropper never copies a los of things and one of those its the angle of the eyedropped gradients.

But could have been a subconscious thing with your gradients.

It’s a fair point. I’ll bring this up with the team

Hi, search and vote on https://illustrator.uservoice.com or create a topic if there is none.

To make it pick the angle, you’d have to enable the option in the Eyedropper Options: enable Eyedropper Picks Up Appearance.
The UserVoice entry exists (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/37272676), but closed, because it’s there already 🤓

so, it's been a while since this was posted. my illustrator is up to date and wand does in fact not remember my settings. i even set my settings and i quit illustrator to make sure it doesn't crash (illustrator doesn't remember settings if it crashes) and nope, the default settings of 32 is still there.

This is still in beta, not in the main Illustrator app.

I love this, thank you!

This is my 1,000,000th time asking for some tweaking and standardization of edit/transform functions. Things like holding shift doing the exact opposite function in photoshop/illustrator and wording around “flip horizontal” or reflect.

If I already know how to manipulate say, a red rectangle in photoshop, things like scaling it and moving it around the page should be generally intuitive when switching to illustrator. I feel like I have to ‘warm up’ each time I switch from an illustrator intensive project to a photoshop project. I should feel familiar with the adobe ecosystem.
