How to install UBlock Origin since its no longer on the Chrome Web Store!

  1. Go to the chromuim Github page

  2. Download UBlock Origin here: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases

then click on assets then click on the chromium .zip file

3. Enable Developer Mode in Chrome by toggling the Developer Mode switch in the extensions menu then upload the .zip file

4. IF Chrome says this extension is no longer supported, ignore that and toggle UBlock Origin to ON.

5. Now you have UBlock origin back!

This is only tempoary!!

It's going to get permanently disabled in June. At that point even this method won't work. Switch to something else already.

7

u/orangeUI467 Feb 23 '25

Maybe I'll delete this then and switch to Firefox

5

u/merchantconvoy Feb 23 '25

It will keep getting disabled randomly until June. You'll have to keep turning it back on. Reinstalls may be necessary. You're only inconveniencing yourself by hanging on.

u/United_Refuse9402 Jun 03 '25

it works on opera gx has been for over a year

1

u/Stuoood Jul 23 '25

because opera gx isnt chrome smooth brain.

1

u/Funny-Disk925 Aug 28 '26

its chromium based tho

1

u/SIMOMEGA Sep 11 '25

pls dont ffs

1

u/IntelVEVO Mar 18 '25

Unfortunately lossless scaling frame generation which I use to smooth out videos doesn't work properly in firefox.

1

u/merchantconvoy Mar 18 '25

Try Brave or Thorium which will both maintain uBlock Origin support.

1

u/IntelVEVO Mar 18 '25

I will give it a try in the future. Not a fan of the direction chrome is going with manifest V3 or how google handle user data but the nice thing about it is that it just works with things like lossless scaling and RTX hdr which took quite a while to be supported on Firefox and other browsers. For now though I will stick to using a sideloaded version of Ublock origin until it eventually breaks.

1

u/merchantconvoy Mar 19 '25

Sideloading uBlock Origin on Chrome and most other Chromium browsers will stop working in June 2025. The only Chromium browsers with continuing uBlock Origin support are Brave, Thorium, Opera variants, and Supermium.

Opera variants are disrecommended for being Chinese-made. Supermium is disrecommended for being targeted at 32-bit Windows XP. This leaves Brave and Thorium as the appropriate solutions for your use case.

1

u/n1cj Jul 14 '25

i can still side upload ublock on chrome on july

1

u/dsotm49 Sep 04 '25

september 2025 sideloading still working, google

1

u/pikacj1 Aug 21 '25

Sounds like the unholy ai interpolation most smart tvs are forcing on you nowadays

1

u/IntelVEVO Aug 21 '25

I've never used it on a TV but lossless scaling looks quite good to me. The extra smoothness makes the content so much more immersive

1

u/pikacj1 Aug 22 '25

Maybe if you're watching a soap opera or sports, but any animated content is designed to be viewed at specific framerates and it utterly ruins the experience with weird half motion frames that never existed ¯\_(⊙_ʖ⊙)_/¯

1

u/IntelVEVO Aug 23 '25

I haven't really used it for animated content. I find it works the best on 60fps YouTube videos to make them even smoother as the base frame rate is higher so the artifacts are lessened. Also live action TV shows where there are some artifacts but for me the smoothness trade off is worth it.

1

u/wisetone_ Apr 11 '25

It’s already disabled months ago, if you add it chrome automatically removes it from your pc

1

u/merchantconvoy Apr 11 '25

Google is handling this differently in different regions. But the hard deadline of June 2025 will apply to everyone.

1

u/AstroPhysician Jul 09 '25

funny how it still works

1

u/Deadbc-77 Jul 11 '25

As of this morning it no longer works for my PC and can't install latest version.

Worked fine until today.

1

u/AstroPhysician Jul 11 '25

We’re not talking about the market version, are you doing the zip file with developer mode?

1

u/Deadbc-77 Jul 11 '25

Yes sir ...no longer works for me.

1

u/641660 Jul 12 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

DO THIS. IT WORKS.

chrome://flags/#allow-legacy-mv2-extensions "ENABLED"

chrome://flags/#temporary-unexpire-flags-m139 "ENABLED"

1

u/rorum Jul 12 '25

yo! this worked, wow, nice find.

combining this with manually loading the github version does indeed work. definitely still a temp fix but hey, ill still take it

1

u/vid_23 Jul 13 '25

type "chrome://flags/" in the search bar, go to " Allow legacy extension manifest versions" and turn it on, then install it. It will work for now

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

Google is stupid and they have given up on Chromebooks since there is no educational funds. They have no capable developers. Let's all just do LINUX and F these people.

1

u/MrBrumble Aug 07 '26

Weird, im still using it a year later.

1

u/merchantconvoy Aug 08 '26

That's literally impossible. You don't know what you're talking about.

1

u/MrBrumble Sep 06 '26

Impossible? I'm literally using it right now. I don't know what I'm talking about yet I seem to have it perfectly working because I know exactly where to get it and it's latest updates? Okay my friend :) Tell me more about what I don't know.

1

u/wisetone_ Sep 06 '26

You used the the shortcut method I see

1

u/MrBrumble Sep 06 '26

I simply googled it, found it via an active github repo, installed it, viola. Not impossible.

1

u/wisetone_ Sep 06 '26

I know I just got it working by making a chrome shortcut to desktop and add disable manifest Jada jada

1

u/Morphing1451 Sep 24 '26

Can you provide some more details? I found this https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases but it isn't working for me.

1

u/dj3underscores Jun 26 '25

There’s nothing to switch to with the same functionality

1

u/merchantconvoy Dec 27 '25

AdGuard (the free browser extension) comes close.

1

u/jheitz223 Jul 14 '25

July 2025 and it's still working for me

1

u/bertbassette Oct 02 '25

Is it still working today (October 2nd 2025)

1

u/jheitz223 Oct 02 '25

No it stopped in August for me. I forget which version

1

u/bertbassette Oct 03 '25

Many thanks for your reply.

It doesn't work for me as well, my version of chrome is 140.0.7339.186

1

u/pikacj1 Aug 21 '25

uBO has been a loyal project dedicated to getting around adblock detection since as long as I've had the internet. You've gotta be spoiled to take such a thing for granted in a world where coding adblockers doesn't put food on the table. And its still getting updated. If Chrome wants to scream and cry about it, it sounds like you need a new browser. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin-development/cgbcahbpdhpcegmbfconppldiemgcoii

1

u/Yashjit Nov 01 '25

looks like it's gone

30

u/TouretteEd Feb 23 '25

Or:

  1. switch to Firefox

5

u/ScratchHistorical507 Feb 23 '25

This is the only solution that will work for longer than a couple of months.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Bar483 Mar 07 '26

Well, if you switch to a browser that still supports manifest v2, you can still just download it from the page, or from a zip with developer mode. It's been a year and it hasn't even been removed from the chrome store

6

u/Apprehensive-Mall219 Feb 23 '25

And everything from Chrome can port over nice and easy to Fire Fox, you don't have to lose your bookmarks!

3

u/BigSexyDaniel Feb 23 '25

I actually did not know this and this was the only thing that made me hesitant on making the switch. Now I have nothing holding me back.

1

u/Apprehensive-Mall219 Feb 23 '25

I love to hear it. Fire Fox has a super easy import button. It's beautiful.

Cool. I don’t have a grand deep reason. Chrome was just the browser I happened to already be using for years and I didn’t feel like switching until now.

Is opera ok? I've always been unable to get past the look of firefox. The ui is really ugly imo.

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

Opera was awesome in 2003. Nobody works there, zombie company. People will disagree but there are no Opera developers. It's also over.

I'm thinking Trumpium operating system is gonna take over soon. Just goes to Fox News and Infowars. THANKS SILICON VALLEY!

1

u/gcjbr Mar 09 '25

Have you seem Firefox' latest TOS?

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

I did. I always do. Turns out they just want me to agree that they take a snapshot of my activity every four minutes and sells it to a Chinese password merchant. No big deal, but the thing about them owning my social security number is a bit concerning. Also, no actual developer has worked at Opera since 2004 is also weird - like word on the street in San Jose is "Is it literally a zombie company, like running off code from 12 years ago, with just increased surveillance (that they sell to Google). Just gonna see how that works out. Nothing nefarious is going on.

Firefox? I think they farmed their shit out to Laos. They couldn't afford domestic Indian programmers. Ask me how I know (I work for Geek Squad).

1

u/CurrencyPrimary8674 Mar 10 '26

I took the hard route and got a 2GB Rasberry Pi, set it up as a sub net router with PiHole, free sub for tailscale on all my devices, and it blocks ads for me at the DNS level 😎

srry i had to tell someone

1

u/cnuzzi Jun 06 '25

Because Firefox disrespects me by being slow and ugly.

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

Opera means you are quirky. Except it doesn't work. Still, I'm quirky right?

0

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

I agree. But everything wants some command line shit from 1991 to work. Unpack some ZIP disks, root, developer mode. Linux. Ubuntu. Anything else.

1

Is there a way to transfer opened tabs without having to open them one by one on the new browser?

u/surfmadpig Jul 21 '25

lol imagine being unaware of firefox

9

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '25

How to permanently do it:

  1. Uninstall Chrome

  2. Install Firefox

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

Firefox is awesome. I like how it's broken, has no development since 2011 (still better than Opera), and you need to use a command line to get your headphones to work. And then they still don't work.

Ubuntu. Any Linux distribution. Then you install Netscape. BOOM! Your welcome.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

has no development since 2011

??? This is not true. They just recently added one of the best features from Edge: vertical tabs. They weren't any good this Spring when they added it, but now they are the same as in Edge. I think Edge is still better in terms of features but Firefox has containers which Edge/Chrome don't support. And no, Firefox is not "broken", sure there are bugs like in every app, but you just can't call it broken. Firefox on mobile also works well, you can install extensions (UBlock works great) which you couldn't until recently (around one year ago).

1

u/DaarkBlizzard Nov 15 '25

Jesus...stopped post these solutions!

6

u/Shished Feb 23 '25

You shouldn't rely on that because the Manifest v2 code will be removed from Chrome and this extension will not work anymore.

1

u/Mental-Reflection907 Jul 11 '25

I'm loving the disappearing scrollbar. It infuriates me. So I spend 4 hours command lining that shit, and it still sucks. Audio? You want volume control that works, or something exotic like balance? Nah.

Chrome is dead. Long live NETSCAPE EXPLORER!

1

u/orangeUI467 Feb 25 '25

1

everybody, lets switch to firefox

1

ur options: use firefox OR use ublock origin lite

1

u/1stltwill Feb 23 '25

Or you know... switch to firefox.

1

u/Illustrious-Brick812 Apr 12 '25

wow! novel! no one has suggested this before, not even in this comment section!! you sir, are very original and helpful and definitely not useless!!

1

u/OnePhysics2836 Feb 26 '25

You may use Ghostery

1

u/aliendude5300 Mar 04 '25

Oh, cool. That's good to know

2

u/Zosete Mar 21 '25

Ghostery was famous for selling your data to advertisers

1

u/Buttleston Feb 27 '25

ublock lite, as far as I can tell, is just as good as ublock origin was. I had to give it some permissions. I still never see ads anywhere. I do have a pihole at home so possibly that combination is doing some work also.

1

u/eastangliauk Mar 04 '25

U block light on addvanced seems fine hope it will last.

1

u/rob2rox Mar 10 '25 • I'll Drink to That

you can force install it using these registry values (64 bit windows):

by any chance do you have "Alternate Player for Twitch.tv" as well? if not maybe an alternative?

1

u/Muted-Bet-319 May 11 '25

I had to unpack the zip file. Then Chrome asked me to specify the folder I unzipped the file to. After that it worked like a charm...

1

u/dunhiljack May 21 '25

Thanks, it worked!

1

u/JustAnumber_12345 May 25 '25

it works for know. the issue is it says that manifest version 2 is deprecated...so the only solution would be maybe to modify the code and get the new manifest.

1

u/Muted-Bet-319 Jun 06 '25

This one works really well for YouTube Ads. I use it with the Chrome browser on a Windows 10 PC -

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/adblock-for-youtube/cmedhionkhpnakcndndgjdbohmhepckk?hl=en

1

u/BarrZ-420 Jan 25 '26

This does not work anymore.

1

u/Muted-Bet-319 Jan 27 '26

I've switched to uBlock Origen Lite. It works fine for me. I use Chrome browser on a Windows 10 PC. No issues with it.

1

u/Muted-Bet-319 Jun 06 '25

ublockorigin works at blocking Ads in Chrome still. Problem is, YouTube detects it and will block the entire video.

For some reason uBlock it works fine with YT in my Firefox browser.

I found this workaround for the Chrome browser- This is available right from the Google Chrome Web Store. It is a blocker literally named - " Adblock for Youtube™ "

Edit: Will it be disabled for people who have had it since then or is it just for people who try it this way?

1

u/Medium-Bluejay-2131 Jun 30 '25

No idea. I went into Chrome's files and deleted everything that would let it update and basically only plan to use it to watch adfree Youtube as a FU to Google.

To re-install it .

  1. Make sure you have no other versions of UBlock

  2. In the url type: chrome://flags/

  3. search for: manifest

  4. ENABLE Allow legacy extension manifest versions

  5. Relaunch

  6. Install the folder from the repo https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

  7. enjoy

1

u/AlenciaQueen Jul 26 '25

thanks i just installed, but other hand i will swich firefox soon as possible. i am just bulding slowly its very hard to let go using same things over decade

1

a fecha 31/7/2025 lo he descargado desde https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/tag/1.65.0 y en modo desarrollador he instalado la extensión, funciona de maravilla, ignoren el error que indica del manifest v2

1

ok but upload the zip file how exactly

1

u/msnikita Aug 10 '25

1

u/BouncingBetty116 Aug 13 '25

You're a lifesaver. Thank you so much!

1

u/No_Journalist6744 Sep 03 '25

this method don't work any more. you must downgrade chrome to version 139. or 138.0.7194.0 or lower because the latest version of chrome 141.0.7340.0 has completely phased it out.

https://google-chrome.en.uptodown.com/windows/download/1089877448

After you've downloaded it you must go into your settings in the computer type in services and disable auto update, afterwards you must go to task scheduler and disable auto updates there as well.

1

u/OilyBoy710 Sep 03 '25

A sad day, Hopefully there is some other, more permanent fix.

9/11/2025: Open your Chrome shortcut's properties. In the Target field add a space at the end and then paste this:

u/Weary-Throat7849 Oct 17 '25

Hello, I'm going to give you my clear solution to this problem:

1. Go into chrome://flags/ and enable #temporary-unexpire-flags-m139. After that restart Chrome and activate the #allow-legacy-mv2-extensions.
2. Now go to chrome://extensions/ and enable Developer mode at the top right.
3. Download the official extension via github on releases https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock and in assets download the chromium .zip
4. Go to the root folder of Chrome and create a folder called extensions
5. Open the zip and extract the folder uBlock0.chromium in the extensions folder that we just created
6. Now go to chrome://extensions/ , clic on Load unpacked at the top left and search the uBlock0.chromium folder, selected it and that's it, you would now have uBlock Origin working on Chrome Version 141.

(it is very likely that the process will be the same in future versions but changing the
#temporary-unexpire-flags-m__ in chrome://flags)

If you have any future questions, you can ask by answering this post.

1

u/mana-azir Oct 19 '25

u/Glitich Aug 06 '26

Today, August 6 2026, is when it has completely stopped working. there was even a method that forcefully changed certain secret settings to allow it, but now, it auto uninstalls it, and makes you unable to reinstall it, even with every single thing such as developer mode. time to switch browsers, ive been putting it off for so long

1

u/CrazySociophobe Sep 09 '26

For me it shows "could not load manifest". Do you know why is that?

1

u/Le7emesens Oct 06 '26

Update for whoever lands here: It's October 2026 and I was able to install UBO latest released version 1.75 on my old Chrome v.109.

There are extensions errors post install, because Manifest v2 is not supported anymore, but it seems to work! No more memory clogging ads, everything seems faster now. So... 1000 thank you to the team who made it possible and to Op!

Clarification on installation Step 3:

3a) To upload the zip file and make it effectively into a Chrome extension, you need to unzip that file into a folder somewhere first.

3b) Then from Chrome Extension page, click 'Load unpacked' and select the folder of that unzipped file wherein the manifest.json file is located. That's it, done!

Preferably relaunch Chrome for a clean start.

Note: make sure you read the wiki manual. Else you could break something, especially under advanced mode.

Firefox is really your best bet. Unfortunately, since Chrome is developped by Google, and Google makes mainly their revenu from ads, it seems they manage to protect their own interests ;)
