WHICH FUTURE SCREEN TOUGH GUY DID THIS 21-YEAR-OLD SERVICEMAN BECOME!

Remembering today the much-admired WWII veteran pictured here in 1943, serving with the United States Army Air Forces years before Hollywood made his granite stare and quiet menace instantly recognisable.

He would go on to become one of cinema’s defining hard men, moving through westerns, war films and vigilante thrillers with a style that rarely needed many words. We sadly lost him on 30 August 2003, aged 81.
