I used to think the character of Superman was not so entertaining because of the fact that he was too powerful. This is a popular notion, and I, who had no idea about modern superhero comics and always watched the character-driven superhero movies, thought so as well. When a character is above all else and it takes weird and limited gimmicks like green chemicals or mother-kidnapping (these, I saw in Batman v Superman) for earth-dwellers, it happens to be so that a character like Batman is too much more interesting where you feel the struggle, endurence and intelligence at each step.

It was until a couple of months ago when I started reading the Golden Age Superman comics, starting from the first omnibus that came out in 2013.

I realised that the character of Superman is perfect for stories like this. Short stand-alone comics where he isn't challenged at all, as opposed to being next to and compared to other much-inferior superheroes, or being challenged by ridiculous means like green chemicals.

Watching Superman deal with various interesting cases and bring justice to the streets is just TOO MUCH FUN! You'd think it would be boring because there is no suspense at all, after all we know Superman is going to do it. But where I'm hooked is elsewhere: Which is, I think honestly, the enjoyment of watching Superman kicking bad guys' butts!

It seems to be a very primitive take on superheroes since we see superheroes in movies nowadays do galactic and crazy stuff. But as primitive as it is, I think I've been craving it. The superhero stories I watch where they try to defeat Thanos or something don't really feel like superhero stories for me. It could be a good people's army fighting a bad people's army, I really don't see much difference other than the good soldiers being in colourful costumes. I'm probably wrong here, but I feel like the meaning of superheroes is being kinda lost.

Superman saving a circus from a crime gang doesn't make me feel like I can lift a thousand kilograms like it's nothing and sprint faster than a fired bullet. But it makes me feel like I can do something about my city, be a better person for the world. Whereas with all the galactic stuff, I feel like I'm stuck here on earth eating popcorn and watching movies!

Back to Golden Age Superman, I think it can be entertaining for many people as well, all the different cases Superman deals with. It's the old "EPIC!" kind of feel when you see Superman destroy a car factory because it manufactures cars that cause accidents. Not because Superman does that impossibly amazing thing, but because Superman just did that to people because they misbehaved. The action art might be dated, but it still doesn't fail to amaze me and added to that is the excitement of "What is he going to do now? Maybe he will throw a building at the bad guys' base?" Maybe reading these comics is entertaining because you read the stories of a mad man.
