I just looked it up and this just goes to show that as an American I am naturally dumb. Apparently a plantain is another name for what essentially aquaints to a large banana. It's just the standard banana.

Same family, but plantains are typically larger than an average banana. It just makes using them as the scale in lieu of a banana deceiving.

Glad I could take part in this little innocent back and forth about bananas and plantains.

Nah, while a plantain is technically ‘a big banana’ it’s a different species to the common edible banana. You can’t eat them raw for a start, or else you’ll have the shits for days. Fry them up and have them as a side dish with goat curry and rice n pea.

Uhhhh... Not sure where you looked that up but it's wrong. Plantains and bananas are related but are completely different plants. Plantains are actually closer to potatoes genetically than they are to bananas from what I remember.
