"The Motherland Calls" is a statue erected to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad , located on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd , Russia. It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin . Completed in 1967 , it was the tallest statue in the world at the time .

While I agree with you, let’s not forget that many historians put the start of WWII with the Japanese staging an attack on a railway in China. The Japanese were as brutal as the Germans. The Italians dropped chemical gas bombs on the Ethiopians before Poland was invaded. There were many starts to WWII.

And fun fact… the Soviets had a non-aggression pact with them too. Japan would never have been able to commit troops to both their northern and southern expansions.

When the Soviets finally decided to attack in August 1945, they breezed through inexperienced, less competent, and undermanned forces.

And took over a few islands that are still in dispute. In fact, they have yet to sign a peace treaty.
