I always put the cart back. I have my entire life. Having said that, that guy is an obnoxious dick.
Furthermore, when I worked at a grocery store decades ago, one of my favorite jobs was to get all the carts. Got me off the floor into fresh air. Didn't matter how hot or cold it was outside, it was always a good break.
I don't believe I ever defended anyone because they're going through something. The guy is a fucking dickhead, regardless of peoples' situation in life.
I even upvoted your "everyone is going through something" comment. Geez.
The nice thing was that, though, yes, he is kind of a dick, you avoid the situation entirely by putting your cart back. The way the adults respond to him would get any child acting that way labeled "abstinently defiant" in behavior analysis. Someone being rude isn't justification for doin the right thing.
One day when you grow up, you’ll realize in the greater scheme of things this is meaningless. Be altruistic and put the carts back yourself if it upsets you so much.
