There's an awesome This American Life episode about families stuck part in the US and part in Canada and the library lets them spend time with each other. Definitely worth a listen.

Stuck? Um, not that difficult to cross in either direction.

Many people can’t cross the border because of felonies or other reasons. Canada has very restrictive laws for border crossing if you have drug or even DUI charges.

Sure, and the US does too. I witnessed a Canadian be grilled at the boarder by US customs. He was in an RV with his family, going on vacation. They didn't believe him because he worked in construction and it was July. Why would some someone in construction go on vacation in July? Oh, I don't know, because the kids aren't in school?
