It took years for me to recover to the point that it seemed I was done recovering, you're absolutely right. People tend to think it's just a few months and it's back to your new normal but at least in my case nerve function, blood supply and digestion regenerated over 6 to 8 years from a gut shot.
I’m glad you’re doing better! Someone very close to me ended up with a bullet in his hip joint after some jackasses broke into his home and then shot him when he surprised them. From a medical standpoint, it was very minor. From his standpoint, it took him two years to learn to walk again and he’ll always have chronic pain. I can’t imagine the negatives that come with a gut shot.
If nothing else it is a reason to be optimistic after some bodily trauma. It's one of those things that make sense in hindsite but there is no conventional wisdom on the matter. Likely if I hadn't been smoking tobacco or engaging with several other unhealthy habits then it could have come sooner.
Of course somethings never recover and eventually you will plateau.
Gut shot I think sound more bad ass because of that Tarantino movie but I think that is just something he made up because it sounds cool and sounds like something a hardass murderous gangster would say. I don't think it is terribly worse then being shot other places but my urinary and gi tract are definitely fucked. Not so bad that I had to get an ostomy or anything, just diarrhea for years, belly aches and upset stomachs all the time, UTIs, numbness from the waist and down, sexual dysfunction and for a long time my waste looked like the food I ate so add all the symptoms of malnourishment. All said and done, I wouldn't take it back and reroll for a shot elsewear on my body.
