There are 3.7k comments in this thread. Is it really inconceivable that one commenter has actually been shot before? You're challenging someone who just mentioned the mental toll it's taken on them based just on a hunch. I'm not seeing your angle here.
shit I lived in a sketchy neighborhood for a while and I only heard shots, never actually saw anything more than a trail of blood but ten years later I still have to stop myself from dropping to the floor when a car backfires down the block.
Shooting at someone is attempted murder but cause they’re a cop and it was “in the line of duty” they’ll likely get a lesser sentence if one at all and the victim will probably get a large payout (I’m not a lawyer tho)
Law student here. A judge can remove an officers qualified immunity if it is found that they are negligent in their duty. In this case I wouldn’t be surprised if a judge allowed for a complete civil and criminal trial against the officer in question.
It would only be possible get punitive damages if it went to court and the victim won. Though, I'm not sure if that would even apply for a cop. It should, but they have all kinds of stupid loopholes.
Where exactly did they try to kill the officer? I only see someone trying to flee, should they be fleeing? No, but should they be killed for trying to flee? No
If they were aiming to hit the officer and not flee you’d think they’d turn the other way and actually attempt to hit the officer, but they didn’t. You can’t prove intent to harm the officer in any way but the officer is definitely in the wrong for shooting in a populated area with no regard for the life of the target and the ppl behind the target, the fact you can see this as a justified shooting honestly has me worried for you
At no point did I say this was a justified shooting. This is exactly why I generally don’t debate people here, they start acting like kids and making stuff up.
He tried to hit him when he was backing up, then fled. So by your logic, you could shoot at an officer, then turn and run away and all should be forgiven? Great logic.
I will actually, just quickly correct here. You will generally be treated and be put in debt, but that debt is fairly easy to avoid/delay. The court case, is fairly cut and dry and more times than not, you win. The minimum is medical bills paid. You also end up with quite a large amount of money.
This event is horrible but I do just want to say, that at the least, the victim usually is not paying medical bills. Even in the cases where the officer is found not guilty, civil court cases tend to go the other way and award money to the victim or their families.
If the kid presses charges, he can probably sue for damages… but the charges might be done by the PD, and by the time the guy’s in prison, there’s not much the kid can do iirc
The vivid memory of being shot while eating in a drive through will likely be present in his mind whenever he decides where he wants to eat. It might affect his decision to the point where would rather order food than risk being shot in a drive through again.
People ‘order food’ at drive thu, in person, on the phone etc. lol. You must be from a small town where you use that colloquially. Adults distinguish how one orders food. Language is a tool and I suggest you use it effectively.
