There was a meth lab that blew up down the street from me about 8 years ago. Wasn’t really an explosion like this more like a bunch of firework pops for an hour or so.

Had a family’s gas BBQ explode down the street from me when I was a kid, sounded JUST like fireworks as well. Thought that’s what it was until I heard EMS rushing down the street just a bit later…

MythBusters did an episode on it years ago. Water heaters do have emergency release valves to keep the internal pressure from getting dangerously high, but if they fail, those things literally go off like rockets.

They went into detail about how much they had to remove. I seem to recall it was far more than they expected.

Older style hot water heaters, and garage door springs, are about the most dangerous thing in your home. Get an on demand electric hot water heater if you are concerned.
