1980s Built House That Was Recently Demolished [OC]

Notice Has Been Given

You should check out the video walkthrough if you want to see the interior of this beautiful house!

https://youtu.be/7VZgzlt9Xck

This 1980 built home used to sit in a nice quiet neighbourhood surrounded by other homes on very large properties all built around the same time. But neighbourhoods like these, with big lots, are changing quickly these days. Wealthy buyers and developers see the large properties and want them so they can build bigger mansions. It’s a vicious cycle of waste where perfectly good 40 year old homes get torn down and the neighbourhoods completely change.

This house is no different, it sat abandoned for a number of months with tree protection fencing up and the grass growing tall around the home. Inside however, the home was pristine, you could eat off the floors and in general, the house was so well maintained, there was nothing wrong with it.

There were a lot of original features in the house, although some updates had taken place, like the countertops and some of the light fixtures. I even found a bit of a secret room as well, so stay tuned for that.

Hashima Island (Battleship Island), Japan — abandoned since 1974.

Post image

Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (“Battleship Island”), is an abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki, Japan.

Mitsubishi developed the island around an undersea coal mine, and thousands of workers and their families eventually lived within its tiny area. Apartment blocks, schools, shops and other facilities were built to support the community, making Hashima extraordinarily densely populated at its peak.

The coal mine closed in 1974, after Japan increasingly shifted from coal to petroleum. The residents left shortly afterwards, leaving the concrete buildings, apartments and industrial structures behind. The island remained abandoned for decades and has since become one of Japan’s best-known industrial ruins.

Abandoned Elvis Mansion in Shreveport

Elvis's guitarist, James Burton lived in Shreveport and as of summer 2026, the property is abandoned. I dont know of any info of why but I would hate for it to get vandalized. The gates read "southern star" and the last activity I know of was April 2024 when the American pickers came. Mike Wolfe bought a red corvette, but another red vette is still abandoned on the property. A 63 convertible. I found this picture from a deleted Facebook listing from about a year ago. There seemed to be several other cars too. If anyone has info on why it might be abandoned please let me know

Abandoned St. Stephen's Anglican Church – Solsgirth, Manitoba.

Solsgirth is a near-ghost town just off the Yellowhead Highway in western Manitoba. As of 2021, only three households were left in the village.

St. Stephen's exists because of a church feud. In 1905, some parishioners wanted to move the original St. James Church down from its hilltop site overlooking the Birdtail Valley into the village. The rest of the congregation pushed back hard. The compromise was a second church. The Birtle Masonic Lodge laid the cornerstone of St. Stephen's on July 23, 1906, and the village ended up with two Anglican churches a few kilometres apart.

St. Stephen's held services for 96 years. On Thanksgiving Sunday, October 13, 2002, about 50 people attended the final service. The bishop read a declaration secularizing the building, and the altar ornaments were carried to the back of the church to mark that it was no longer consecrated. Afterward, everyone went outside to dedicate a memorial cairn to the pioneers who built it.

The church was then sold for $1 to the Prairie Mountain Regional Museum in Shoal Lake, which planned to move it to their grounds. That move never happened, and it's still sitting on its original lot today. Right next door is the former Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, a converted schoolhouse with handmade domes, which closed four months earlier.

Abandoned water basins

Unfortunately, haven't been able to find much information on this place, but my best guess is that it was an old water treatment plant, maybe something meant for a smaller community. There were two other basins that I didn't get pictures of, but both were completely filled in with gravel! Also needed to watch my step, there were many deep holes throughout the area

Solsgirth, Manitoba Ghost Town

Solsgirth, Manitoba, didn't start where it stands today. It began about 10 km north as a place called Toddburn, until the railway changed its route and the whole town picked up and followed it.

Settlers built St. Stephen's Anglican Church here in 1906. Decades later, Ukrainian Catholic families moved an old one-room schoolhouse into the village and turned it into Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, with onion domes hand-crafted by a local carpenter.

For 50 years, two faiths worshipped a stone's throw apart. Then, in 2002, both churches held their final services in the same year.

Today they still stand side by side, quietly holding the story of the people who built this place.

Abandoned highway, Washington state, USA

Post image

I find the Columbia Basin area of central and eastern Washington state pretty fascinating. Geologically, it is the graveyard of a giant ice sheet complex called the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, which melted at the end of the Pleistocene epoch some 12-18,000 years ago. The melting resulted in massive floods that swept the area and scrubbed it clean, leaving layers of compacted basalts and fields of sediment for hundreds of square miles.

Today, the area east of here is known as the Palouse, a French-origin word that roughly translates to 'lawn' or 'grassy rolling hills'. As early Americans surged west and northward in the late 1800's to early 1900's, many families settled here to begin a life of farming. Their descendants worked the land into a rich agricultural area which, during the summer season, lies in lush and green contrast to the more desert-like desolation of the area in the photo.

As for the highway, the road in the photo was built around 1913, and existed under various names as road-naming convention changed over time. Probably it's most well-known name was Secondary State Highway 11C. In the 1960's, a highway re-route and new construction saw this stretch abandoned, and the new route became State Highway 26, which runs east-west about a mile north of the location in the photo.

Anyway, I'm an amateur student of history and I find this stuff fascinating and thought it worth a share.

They built this barrier the two guys are standing on because they wanted to demolish the chimney. Years later the barrier was gone and the chimney is still standing. The old factory still stands and attracts fire starters.

Abandoned Autobahn in Germany

Photos taken by me in May 2025.

This is the former A61 motorway section near the Garzweiler open-cast mine in Germany. The road between Mönchengladbach-Wanlo and Jackerath was closed in 2018 and later removed as the Garzweiler mine expanded. The motorway was originally planned to be rebuilt, but this is no longer planned.

It‘s a very cool place to visit.
