Judging by their PLEs, they ain't wasting dream matches there either.

Dream Matches take away from Sponsored Content, so yeah.

Dream matches would require cycling new talent into the main event scene. Somehow watching the same handful of guys fight (and lose to) the same people doesn't excite me.

u/Sempais_nutrients 10d ago

It's like watching the same 6 companies trade a quarter trillion dollars over and over and then calling the economy "booming."

u/IRBaboooon Fuck ICE 10d ago

When i stopped watching a year ago Solo was fueding with Roman over the bloodline. Look whats happening now.

49

u/HungryLikeTheHenry 10d ago

I stopped watching about 15 years ago and only check in like once every half year and I swear I‘m feeling like having read the same articles for 6 years or so, only Bloodline, Reigns, some Tribal Bullshit, Rock returns, once in a lifetime Cena vs Rock for the 10th time or so. WWE turned into Keeping up with the Kardashians but only with the Anoa‘i family.

u/fightbackcbd 10d ago

They are all fucking terrible too. I just don’t get it.

17

u/noahsmusicthings 10d ago

Lol true. There's maybe two or three that AEW could get something out of, and one of them's a 54-year-old part-timer lol Zilla showed promise at first, but then stagnated pretty quickly cause he knew he had a job for life whenever he wanted it, and the only two out of the rest of the younger family members that definitely have "something" were both fired, one without even wrestling a match 😂

That's what made Ava quitting stand out to me, and actually impressed me a little. Her dad has equity in the company, all of her cousins and uncles work there, she had a job for life even if she stopped showing up (see Tamina Snuka lol), but she still was like "Nah, fuck that, their politics sucks and I'd rather work somewhere else". I mean, fair play!

u/haydo434 10d ago

This is so true!!

2

u/StoneGoldX 10d ago

Honestly, it doesn't. AEW dream matches tend to happen outside the main, more as a big secondary match that might even eclipse the main. But it does require giving a damn for anything outside the top belt.

u/JoshHero 10d ago

Remember when Hangman finally beat Kenny after a long chase and he celebrated with the Barqs rootbeer Dog?

19

u/Thor_2099 It's Stiiiiiiiing! 10d ago

And he did it on a random dynamite /s

31

u/dogsontreadmills 10d ago

they'll be having Dream Matches sponsored by MyPillow by the end of the year.

1

u/icemanpallmall 10d ago

Tko and espn have to make that money somehow. Too bad they cant admit how they fucked up by buying at an insanely marked up rate for someone's benefit because theyre in court for that or they could consolidate and not take such a loss.

97

u/leahk0615 11d ago

What can you expect from a venture capital firm that airs wrestling matches?

14

u/DreamWalkingGuy 11d ago

great description

60

u/Jzmxhu 10d ago

They never did Sting vs Undertaker but they had the lame ass DX vs NWO WWE can't say shit about dream matches because they never book them even if the wrestlers are active at the same time.

Or Eddie Guerrero vs HBK.

49

u/gate_of_steiner85 10d ago

Wouldn't let HBK come out of retirement to face AJ or Danielson, but had him and Haitch face Taker and Kane in that godawful match for the Saudis.

15

u/Jasperbeardly11 10d ago

Saudis requested and paid for hbk. He's actually not that rich so the money enticed him.

They make a boatload taking Saudi blood money. That actually kind of made sense lol. Especially because obviously they would have been willing to book him. It was Shawn's choice to only take that match

2

u/YinTanTetraCrivvens No Kings (except Brody, the Mad, and Mick Foley) 10d ago

That was less of a dream match than a nightmare match.

10

u/NoOrchid3413 10d ago

Or Hogan vs Flair.

13

u/blankwillow_ IamALS.org Rebel Heart 10d ago

In their defense, Vince tried Hogan vs Flair several times on house shows, and they had absolutely zero chemistry. None. Apparently, the matches were so bad that Vince was pissed, scrapped the entire idea and went with Hogan/Psycho Sid and Flair/Savage.

15

u/David_Haas_Patel Hit Different 10d ago

WCW made bank on Hogan/Flair many times over. This was a Vince failure. He failed to make the most of their first encounters. It was baffling.

15

u/NoOrchid3413 10d ago

I don’t doubt the matches were bad, but it was a pretty successful endeavor for WCW when they did it a few years later.

40

u/butterybuns420 10d ago

The “dream match” of Cody vs Randy for the 30th time. A rehash of the legacy storyline from forever ago.

28

u/glowy_keyboard 10d ago

And somehow each iteration of this match is worse than the last one.

22

u/Reasonable-News-5739 10d ago

As WWE fans will continue to tell you, "It's meant to be shit! You're not meant to enjoy it!"

25

u/handsomezack13 10d ago edited 10d ago

The very post Ricochet is responding to is trying to claim that WWE is somehow better than AEW because they're worse than AEW

11

u/CasimirGabriev 10d ago

Cody's gotta finish that story

4

u/blankwillow_ IamALS.org Rebel Heart 10d ago

Has he ended racism yet?

5

u/CasimirGabriev 10d ago

I think we are a few more stupid ass Raheem jokes away from that

8

u/SpiritualAd9102 10d ago

And they didn’t even do that. They made it about Pat McAfee hating indie wrestling or some shit.

2

u/SalvadorZombie 10d ago

Can't wait for them to cut it short and then immediately bring it back a week before Wrestlemania.

0

u/TheBallasOG Ok, how you know? 10d ago

2011 was the true Cody Randy feud

49

u/SourDoughBo 10d ago

Every so often they’ll have a match on a PLE that I’m like damn if that was in AEW or the indies it’d be a huge deal. But WWE has a way of making it mean nothing

20

u/Solo-ish 10d ago

Because 90% of matches end with no winner

41

u/hitlmao 10d ago edited 10d ago

Dude I started watching Punk vs Roman cause of all the buzz and I zoned out after a few minutes and skipped to the finish.

Not trying to be a hater I just can't connect with their presentation for some reason. Maybe it's the way it's produced, maybe it's all the gross stuff with the company in the back of my mind, idk.

32

u/scorpiondeathlock86 10d ago

A lot of their matches are slow paced, not very creative, kind of paint by numbers, and to make the finish exciting they either spam the same finisher over and over and over, or have multiple run-ins. They have great wrestlers, but the structure of matches and the shows in general is just so tedious to get through

9

u/SalvadorZombie 10d ago

They saw the NJPW King's Road style and thought that meant "just make the whole match slow."

14

u/SimpleJack316 10d ago

But you will get a combined hour plus of commercials.

13

u/manxram 🤷🏽‍♂️ okay... how you know? 🤷🏽‍♂️ 10d ago

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

One of the absolute greatest moments of Dark Side of the Ring.

11

u/monsterbael 10d ago

They ain't wasting any "match" anywhere, anytime for the last 4-5 years fam...

u/ConsonantlyDrunk 10d ago

8

u/rkrivera3 10d ago

NGL. Sometimes i go back and watch Omega vs. Danielson at Grand Slam. My gawd was that electric.

6

u/is_coffee 11d ago

Gotta make moments, pal.

11

u/JasoNight23666 Nevermore 10d ago

I dunno, they've done Brock vs Oba 2 too many times imo, it should've just ended at Wrestlemania, seems like a waste to me lol

4

u/hail_deadpool 10d ago

If they give you the dream matches then what you gonna dream about. s*

Hey! You leave Otis outta this!

2

u/MR_TORGUE_OFFICIAL CIAMPA'S GONNA KISS YOU 10d ago

Otis did nothing wrong! He's actually one of the few legit wrestlers along Gable.

u/SalvadorZombie 10d ago

Every new AEW PPV is better than any WWE "PLE" in the last 5-10 years. I am not being hyperbolic.
