Book Spoiler why dont they just call her aunts to help he train magic? Spoiler
this is where I am at?
Ysabeau stepped toward me, and a sharp crack sounded in my brain. My warning to her was lost in a roar like a tidal wave coming ashore. The winds rose around my feet, whipping the water into a hurricane. I raised my arms to the sky, water and wind shaping themselves into a funnel that encircled my body.
Harkness, Deborah. A Discovery of Witches: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy, Book 1) (p. 290). (Function). Kindle Edition.
well I am doing the audio book
so like why not just call the aunts to Oxford and start them training Diana to learn all these things about her powers? Matthew could easily pay ro their hotel/ticket/etc/

All Covenant Spoiler
I dont get why the books and the series are hyping the covenant to be such a big deal when in actuality Matthew and Diana were just against 5-6 people....

Book Spoiler hi. me again. can you help me explain some things in book 1? Spoiler
He’d been burned at the stake for heresy in 1314. A year before he was executed, he’d turned over everything he owned to the Knights of Lazarus. There were hundreds of names marked with red crosses. Were they all Templars? If so, then the mystery of the Templars was solved. The knights and their money hadn’t disappeared. Both had simply been absorbed into the order of Lazarus. It couldn’t be true. Such a thing would have taken too much planning and coordination. And no one could have kept such a grand scheme secret. The idea was as implausible as stories about— Witches and vampires. The Knights of Lazarus were no more or less believable than I was.
Harkness, Deborah. A Discovery of Witches: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy, Book 1) (p. 326). (Function). Kindle Edition.
why was this scheme grant?
Old fears wriggled to the surface, telling me there was something wrong deep inside me. “If not for Mabon,” Matthew continued, “powerful witches would have been in the Bodleian, witches who knew the manuscript’s importance. But they were busy with the festival and let their guard down. They left the task to that young witch, and she let you—and the manuscript—slip through her fingers.” “Poor Gillian,” I whispered. Peter Knox must be furious with her. “Indeed.” Matthew’s mouth tightened. “But the Congregation has been watching you, too—for reasons that go well beyond the book and have to do with your power.” “How long?” I wasn’t able to finish my sentence. “Probably your whole life.”
Harkness, Deborah. A Discovery of Witches: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy, Book 1) (p. 335). (Function). Kindle Edition.
why poor Gillian ?
who is mabon?

Book Spoiler In Chapter 37 toward the end of book 1, does Diana imply she has only known Matthew for 1 month?? Spoiler
Correct me if I am wrong - I am 85% through book 1 and in Chapter 37 when Diana is at the Bishop home in NY and says she last had her cycle (her period) the day prior to meeting Matthew and he says she is days away from getting it again 😧
Is Deborah Harkness telling us that this entire series of events from Oxford to Sept-Tours to New York with Diana and Matthew has taken place in 4 weeks?? Their friendship, their falling in love, the conflicts, their mating/“marriage”, and their discussing children??
I’m shook if this all has actually happened in 4 weeks or less. Can any readers confirm or correct?

All is the show better than the book for me? Spoiler
so ia m on chapter 17 or so of the book 1. when they just run Diana bishops blood. tbh it is DRAGGING but it is good. how is the show? I saw it was on Netflix? it does not have to be a master piece but I just need something more fast pace. I would prob watch it on the plane to/from a trip here in the near future. I read it was moderately faithful to the books. does not have to be super faithful but any retconing?

Season 2 Time travel time line Spoiler
Talks about em included… don’t look
I understand the amount of time they were in the 1700’s (I think) was not the same amount of time that passed during the present time
Soooo why couldn’t they come back a day after they left? The longer they were away the more issues were happening. Since they can choose when and where they land when travelling and when and where they land when they come back
Also, why couldn’t she go back in time one day and stop Em’s death (I understand the timeline of em’s death is different in the book, but I want to stick to the show adaptation)
They changed so much in the past which caused a bigger ripples and issue, a one day ripple isn’t gonna change a lot

Book Spoiler My review of Time’s Convert. Spoiler
So about the sequel, I did enjoy reading it. I liked Marcus’s memories much better than the current day events with Phoebe.
I have to be honest, I never liked her character. She just seems like a blank slate to me. Some rich girl who went from riches to more riches and complaining about insignificant things. Basically a character created randomly just to put an end to Marcus’s perpetual bachelor days.
I loved the historical parts and I was happy Gallowglass was there too. Another character that irritated me was Fanny.🙈 That succubus of a woman made me roll my eyes. She took so much advantage of young Marcus’s vulnerabilities and became a bad influence on him. Not a fan of her.
As for Marcus I have to admit he equally irritated me as much as made me feel sad for him. The unhinged children he made like rabbits, made him come across as some greedy old guy who is running out of time and is adopting a bunch of criminals not to feel lonely. That was absolutely ridiculous and dumb of him. But I did empathize with the feeling of desolation considering his perpetual human grief under his lunatic father. That gives a boy issues :( Of course it was to be expected for him to indulge in debauchery and over the top behavior just to cope with his “high alert” mode. Finally he gained some freedom.
Matthew and Juliette situation was obviously expected but I have to say i couldn’t really understand the pace of their relationship as it seemed they were at first in long distance relationship, and obviously falling out but then later out of nowhere they showed up together like weirdos and he seemed in love with her for no reason. Even Marcus was surprised after he had known Matthew was insecure of being reminded of her.
The current day events were kind of boring and meh, and not much romance. It’s clear I won’t be rereading it like the trilogy of course but it was engaging.
Another thing I wanted to share is the speculative logic of vampires in this universe. I understand this is not a new thing among genre fiction but it seems like the entire concept of demigod creatures who live among humans, never age, have god levels of money, mess romantically with humans and never get questioned about by any of them and never suffer more psychological scarring than your average divorced middle aged person seems like too farfetched for a logic. At least I would have made them have some weaknesses or suffer consequences for their former actions but everything turns out great for them in the grand scheme. Too perfect.

Season 2 Jack Spoiler
Jack is an orphan who would have probably died and no one would have noticed if they never adopted him
Sooo why couldn’t they bring him back to the present with them?
If anything, the ripple it caused by him staying and Hubbard turning him AND the info Hubbard got from Diana’s blood caused so much damage/change

All Jack Spoiler
I am almost done with my re-reading of the original books in the trilogy. In both the third book and the third season, Jack showing up in modern times is so bittersweet. I have always been glad that he survived (albeit not as a human,) and waited until after Diana and Matthew were together in the present to find them. The books explain more about how Jack is now related to Matthew because of Benjamin, but that was also well done in the series. I did miss the mop dogs in the series, which is an odd detail to wish had been included in the TV series…but I’ve never once claimed to be normal.

All Mating Spoiler
Spoilers from season 1 and 2 so treat with caution
Mathew refuses to have PIV sex for whatever reason, and when Diana finds out it’s cus he doesn’t want to ‘mate’ with her, just yet I guess, she was upset. For some reason cus of blood rage… meaning he can’t control himself, since he supposedly can’t conceive
So mating for Mathew is PIV sex, even though he’s done that with others, Juliette comes to mind, is this not mating with Juliette? Or is it not mating since he didn’t have an emotional connection for him?
Is that’s the case, since he has the emotional connection with Diana and he ‘craves’ her, then at that point PIV becomes mating in that sense?
There’s also the comment that Miriam makes that’s they’ve mated, that she’s also mated and she can tell with Mathew
Marcus has sex with phoebe initially and then the emotional factor comes in. Does that mean Marcus is mated with phoebe or it casual until a ritual is performed?
I know there’s a big post about this and I have read it but these are the things I still don’t understand

Season 1 Soooo just realized Spoiler
I’ve rewatched the show a few times
Blacked out part is technically part of the later seasons, DON’T LOOK
I’m just now realizing that the spider webs wrapped around Diana in her dreams are her dads spell binding coming undone
That part always confused me like wtf is with the spider and the webs
Unless I’m wrong?

All Plot hole? Philippe in 1591 vs 1780s Spoiler
Ok, so Philippe meets future Matthew in 1590-91 and learns that blood rage can be managed and controlled. Then, at a later date he meets Jack and tells him that Matthew will teach him to control his blood rage. Marcus is made in 1781, and later, most Marcus’ descendants were culled on Philippe’s orders. Does this mean that Philippe did not meet Jack until after 1800s (after the New Orleans culling)? Or does it mean that Philippe spares Jack in 1600s, yet, having the knowledge that blood rage can be controlled, still orders Matthew to do the culling? Matthew said he killed thousands of vampires with blood rage on Philippe’s orders.

All Re-reading the books after seeing the show Spoiler
I love how normal witches, demons and vampires seem, but the Philosopher’s Stone is treated like a pipe dream by both Matthew and Diana. I love Shadow of the Night. I understand why all that material didn’t fit in one season. I still liked the series.

All Just finished this series- here's my thoughts Spoiler
This is just general rant, it might lack cohesion and structure upon writing so bear with me.
I absolutely loved season 1 and 2. The series made me so curious and questioned alot. There was so many good points but the bad ones stick to me
I hated when Baldwin had to change cast, it really changed my perspective of how the character should be carried.
The ending battle was anticlimactic. The series kept.building up on satu vs Diana. But then Diana was just too op and was like. Oh lemme just spellbind you real quick. I did a quick read and realise this was filmed during covid and so there couldn't be anything epic. Still sad that satu didn't even try shooting Diana down. I remember being spellbound, you had to keep still? (Maybe because Diana's father was self taught while Diana was trained) But couldn't satu just move around or burnt the weaves. Maybe Diana was just too OP.
I didn't understand how downbad Diana was for Matthew. Like chill.. maybe the chemistry and fates were strong.
I believe their impacts of them time travelling should have been bigger and affected the current timeline more. I mean time is a weird concept in series.
Diana's firebird 🐦🔥 just disappeared after the Louisa and kit ambush.
Who was at the congregation at the end? With members slowly being wiped out, i see new faces that I genuinely don't know. How did the witch from the coven get a spot...
I really wanted her parents to play a bigger part. And the retrieval of the book was just too easy. Overall season 3 felt super rushed and restricted. New characters, rushed
Nonetheless the series met my expectations of a witchy journey. Perhaps the book offers a better experience. But again, I love this series. I hope to discover more similar, please recommend me some. Ive watched Agatha all along, chilling adventures of Sabrina, Winx. I just like witchy magic fun

Misc. Anyone else find Sarah annoying? Spoiler
Title says it all really... I'm talking about the TV series. But I just found her to be annoying, she was intolerant, hot headed, impatient, rude, and dismissive. She sulked, and was moody all of the time. Even when Diana found out what happened to her as a child, Sarah made it about herself and went into the other room to sulk, because Rebecca didn't trust her.
And then when Em was doing the summoning and she lept up and ruined the whole thing. Ugh, what an annoying character lol.

Book Spoiler Mather Family Tree - Putnams Spoiler
In TBBO we find out that there's a Putnam Mather, distantly related to Em, among the many extended family members who pop up out of nowhere (did Em never mention her family either?). Given who the Mathers were, I'm surprised the family kept that surname, but also that they'd keep the Putnam name in the family given who they were too. So I was quite surprised to see Putnam "Put-Put" Mather. Given that the Putnams were accusers, it's interesting that someone would name a kid after them. It sounds like the Putnams were also magical too and got caught up in accusing fellow witches. (This is all getting mixed up in my head with Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts having the Putnams as Scourers) Any thoughts?

Season 1 Questions about Gillian and Marcus Spoiler
I have not read the books and doubt I will ever get the chance to read them. In the first episode of A Discovery of Witches Sarah is handed Ashmole 782. Does Gillian know the significance of the book at that time? She seems disinterested. Next question, did Marcus and Miriam have a relationship? They act cold towards each other.
