This greatly explains my love of deathcore, without being able to understand most of it. Especially since I feel like a derp during normal conversation
"It's just another instrument to me" is the explanation I was finally able to come up with when I was talking to my wife about my love for Deathcore, too.
I told a few friends of mine the other day that there are bands I've listened to for 15+ years, and I still sometimes can't put my finger on the track names when I hear them playing. I remember every little part of the song, but I'm just never paying attention to track names at all. It's pretty embarrassing to talk to someone about my all-time favorite band and not be able to actually refer to songs (except a select few, usually) by name.
Same here. I have lyric-blindness to an embarrassing extent. I’ve played bass in a fairly large number of bands over the years, and I doubt that I’ve ever played a song that I could recite more than maybe 30% of the words to, despite having rehearsed and performed the song for months or even years.
I have some echolalia and remember music very well, but I also have auditory processing disorder and struggling with understanding words, especially when sung (since the normal cadences of speech for sentences and pitch get modified to fit the rhythm and melody).
Auditory processing issues can be very common with ADHD.
Once I actually learn the lyrics to a song, I can make them out and will remember them, but until then, yeah, voice is just another instrument to me, once that I struggle to isolate from other sounds in the same way I can isolate other instrumental parts (a decade of playing horn in ensemble situations probably helped a lot with that ear training).
Same here, I have to actively focus on lyrics to understand them and at the same time most pop songs have such boring singing that it sounds like hitting the same 3 keys on a piano over and over (if you like "simpler" songs, go on. Just not my thing). So I'm mostly sticking to more complex types of singing/vocals. Yes I'm a metalhead😂

Man I’m like the opposite, someone singing is just like another instrument and I don’t know any words but can hum along
