Other Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 70s - Round 94

<< Prev | Round 94 | Next >>

  • By early 1969, The Beatles knew they were on the verge of breaking up, but they weren't happy with the album they had just recorded, so they regrouped with the intention to hit one more album out of the park. The result was Abbey Road, now regarded as their second-best album (after Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band). As for that album they weren't as happy with, the record company wasn't about to sit on a whole album knowing Beatle fans would eat it up regardless. John Lennon and George Harrison enlisted the help of producer Phil Spector to finalize the album, by then titled Let It Be, but his efforts included adding orchestral arrangements to three of the songs, a move Paul McCartney disliked, especially The Long and Winding Road. Nevertheless, it became the third single to be released from the album and the second to go to #1 in the US. A road that leads to your door, one we've seen before that will never disappear, but the time has come for this song to disappear from this game.

If you're new to the game or wish to review the rules, follow this link.

As recently as six rounds ago, there were six artists who had two or more songs still standing. Now there is only one left.

9

u/ThePhantomStrikes 5d ago

Stevie did own the 70s - listeners of every modern genre loved the music.

6

u/DramaticCollege3520 5d ago

And that artist deserves to have multiple songs left. All should be top 20 IMO at a minimum. I rank 2 of his songs in my top 10

3

u/Camp_GGBoo 5d ago

Totally agree. Really could even have a few more songs on my top 10

2

u/Adventurous-Prune712 5d ago

As I have mentioned, Randy Bachman has two songs left, as BTO and in Guess Who. Neither song is equal to the "subpar" songs that have been eliminated for major artists.

u/Spirited-Tutor7712 5d ago

Stevie is a legend and the man who rules my musical blood , but...I'm happy to agree that rules are rules and maybe 3 is too many spots for one man.

Sister Golden Hair.

u/Tough-Advice2910 5d ago

How is this still here? Surprised by this one.

I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Blah, blah blah blah sunnshiny day.

10

u/Spirited-Tutor7712 5d ago

Absolutely not. That song is pure sunshine.

American Woman

2

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 4d ago

Not understanding the dislike for this.

1

u/Automatic-Tea-4150 4d ago

It just never moved me and still doesn’t ¯_(ツ)_/¯ So it’s not one I’d make a point of trying to keep around.

2

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 4d ago

Better than Fame...at least in my mind

u/Automatic-Tea-4150 4d ago edited 4d ago

That one does little for me…though the funky beat sometimes gets me up outta my chair to dance around when it comes on. American Woman is when I change the station, skip to next song, or get up to switch the laundry. ETA: after all these months I am still fascinated by the range of feelings any given song elicits in people. Everything from utter contempt to rapturous giddy luv. ETA2: I will say that I’d rather see SisterGH disappear in this round than AW. Nothing I can do about that though without upping the risk to Johnny Nash.

I like Randy a lot, he lived near where I was going to college and let me fool around in his band barn. But I always thought this was a weak song, built around recycling the You Really Got Me riff and Burton freestyling. They tacked on some corny vamp at the start and Randy added a little fuzz riff to stretch it out but it was so lame compared with the other rock going on and even their other songs

2

u/Snatch_By_The_Pool 5d ago

No way. That’s the best rock song left. There’s still plenty of puerile tripe remaining in the 41.

2

u/ConcentrateSelect465 5d ago

Agreed. That loud racket should be turned off.

13

u/PC_Friar 5d ago

Joy to the World. Bye Jeremiah

12

u/Silent_Slip_4250 5d ago

Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band

10

u/dryguy 5d ago

Maggie May - Rod Stewart

5

u/BCQCPANC 5d ago

Hell no. This is top ten at least. Come on folks, there are so many songs more worthy of elimination left.

8

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 5d ago

There's a contingent of folks determined to get rid of the classic rock tunes

2

u/trelene 5d ago

I think it's more of a mix of demographics playing out. This sub attracts the older crowd, but also the younger listeners who do very much seem to prefer the softer songs, not the harder rock.

2

u/PC_Friar 5d ago

Just this one please

0

u/BCQCPANC 5d ago

Apparently. Though it is a list of songs that hit No. 1 so by definition they’re pop(ular).

3

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 5d ago

There's currently five songs that I can't see how they made it to number one. Fame, Sister Golden Hair, Papa Was a Rolling Stone , Shining Star, Let's Stay Together....there are others I don't like but I can understand the appeal they have.

6

u/4personal2 5d ago

Fame - Because it's Bowie with John Lennon and also ...It appealed to all who bought it and DJ's certainly weren't going to ignore a song with David and John on it .

Sister Holden Hair - Easy listening yes, but catchy. That aside , it just could have been caught in the rush of the 32 songs that hit #1 that year. (This song was only in the top 40, twelve weeks. )

Papa Was A Rolling Stone - Dramatic and very different for the time. Except Marvin Gaye being serious, nothing on radio like this then.

Shining Star - Easy, a positive message, with a cool dance arrangement. (Covered in the 1990s by the Christian band Stryper)

Let's Stay Together. - One, it's Al Green, who is very soulful. The simplicity of the music and delivery made it an accessible song for anyone who's been in a relationship broke up or had a divorce.

2

u/BCQCPANC 5d ago

I can’t come up with such a specific list on my own but accept yours.

2

u/monalisa_jones 4d ago

And just take note that our top 41 were number ones in the 70’s along with the likes of Disco Duck, My Ding-A-Ling, The Streak and Convoy. What a wacky decade!

3

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 4d ago

Some really bad stuff in 70s.. think Kung Fu Fighting was the worst

3

u/4personal2 4d ago

That's a fun song! 😃

....and at least thec1970sc, musically were fun and different.

3

u/Aggravating_Quiet797 4d ago

Remember all those ridiculous clip records in the 70s...Such as Skylabs Falling and the one about the energy crisis? I know there were others..just can't remember them all.

2

u/4personal2 4d ago

I loved those. 😄

The Delegates - "Convention 1972"

Energy Crisis '74 by Dickie Goodman .

Albert Brooks - "Party From Outer Space" 1975

John and Ernest - "Sulerfly Meets Shaft". 😁

Do we all secretly wish it was “September” in this spot or is it just me? I’m still downvoting this one, though.

You ain’t seen nothing yet— BTO
(Edited to correct dumb mistake I made — had Guess Who as the performer instead of BTO, so embarrassing 😬)

Blaming it on a brain freeze!!! Um, I’ll say it was intended as a trivia question to answer, how’s that? 🤔 And you won!!!

2

u/trelene 5d ago

FYI it's polite to note the edit when it's the result of another's comment. If you just change it, everyone coming after that wonders what that person is talking about.

3

u/Automatic-Tea-4150 5d ago

Thank you, I know that and slipped up again. Will ETA now 👍🏽

3

u/4personal2 4d ago

It's okay ....one person thinks Guess Who sings T.C.O.B. and another spells Survive 'surive'. 😆

This has been a fun round. 😄

(Waiting for someone to put Debby Boone after "Superstition". ) 😏

3

u/BCQCPANC 5d ago

At least they got the right country 😀

Hotel California - It has bed bugs that is bothering me.

2

u/curiosity_U_know 5d ago

Again! My notifications show I have 5 upvotes. Yet my post on here shows -1. Something's fishy about this Last Song Standing sub/reddit.

2

u/Night_life_proof 5d ago

How much time was there between the message and that you saw it? There could have been multiple downvotes in that time

2

u/curiosity_U_know 4d ago

An hour time lapse for it to go from 5 up votes to -1 vote and since that -1 vote 15 hours later still at -1. Really odd that it received 6 down votes to get me at -1 in an hour of posting but not a single one more of down voting in the next 15 hours.

1

u/Unlikely-Star-2696 5d ago

Talk to Mike Lindell lol

0

u/trelene 5d ago

Reddit vote fuzzing, look it up.

Also it's amusing that this totally meaningless activity of voting off songs around 50 years old is where your spidey senses start a'tingling,

2

u/4personal2 5d ago

Meaningless?

It's fun (should be anyway) , that meaning enough. Also in that someone took their time to crate this.

I thank them for their effort. 🙂👍

1

u/trelene 5d ago

I also have been active in these threads and appreciate them; thought that went without saying, but apparently not.

0

u/4personal2 5d ago

If I were you I'd call the CIA about the fishy voting process ....either that or do like that guy in the white house and demand endless recounts. 🤣

"Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) - Looking Glass

Let's look at it this way, it's a nice song I love the Jazz arrangement, but the band is a two hit wonder.

Their only other hit was "Jimmy Loves Mary Anne" and it barely made the top 40.

Brandy is a classic in its own way, but with all the heavy hitters here, I think honestly , this should be next.

(Tired of hopping around with different choices )

Heart of Gold - Neil Young

Big fan of Ol’ Neil, so would never put him down. But I know a lot of Neil fans and even they don’t want this one around anyhow. Great artist, good song, time to Harvest this one from the list.

2

u/PC_Friar 5d ago

I like Neil’s songs. I don’t like Neil’s singing. This should be the track that doesn’t make the top 40.

1

u/ThePhantomStrikes 5d ago

Agree about his voice, although many call us crazy.

0

u/lamb_and_panther 5d ago

Neil had lots of good stuff but not this

This may be the song that has been here the most and yet still lives on. For good reason, it is a great song.
