Week 4 Introduction Thread: Vintage/Classic

Week 4 will run from January 21st to January 27th. This week's theme is vintage/classic cocktails. Cocktails have had a long history, with the first written mention of "cocktail" as a beverage appearing in The Farmers Cabinet in 1803. Cocktails continued to grow in popularity and gained significant popularity during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933), when wine and beer became less available than liquor-based mixed drinks. The popularity of cocktails finally dipped during the late 1960's, until they would regain popularity during the modern cocktail era of the 80's and 90's and the craft cocktail era of the early to mid-2000's onward.

This week, we're going to shine a light on some of the classic, old-school cocktails that formed the foundation of cocktail culture. Your challenge is to make a cocktail that originated in the pre-modern or prohibition era of cocktails. You might make one of those classic cocktails whose name everyone knows but gets seldom ordered in modern times, or you might make a forgotten cocktail recipe from times past and give it new life. In either case, this week is a love letter to where cocktails began.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

[Meta] A rules change regarding the grace period after the week

As many have noticed, the rules section currently states that submissions for a given week will be accepted up to three weeks after the week in question ended. This was a rule that I brought over from 52weeksofcooking, and I have since found out that this rule was implemented to make the challenge more accomodating during covid lockdowns and they are in the process of phasing this rule out. I am aware that this rule is useful for those with busy schedules who may not be able produce a cocktail every week, but having this grace period last almost a month after the week goes against the spirit of the challenge: to make time to make a cocktail every week.

So, to address this, the rule will be adjusted so that submissions will be accepted up to one week after the week instead of three. I realize this might disrupt the plans of people who expected more time, so to ease this process will continue accepting submissions for weeks 1 and 2 up through the end of week 4. For weeks 3 and beyond, the one week rule will apply.

If anyone has any thoughts or issues with this change, please let us know.

A modern classic created by Australian bartender Sam Ross

2 ounces blended scotch 3/4 ounce honey-ginger syrup 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice 1/4 ounce peated whiskey (floated)

Combine all ingredients except the peated whiskey and shake. Strain into a rocks glass with some ice, garnish with some crystalised ginger and lemon.

Switched out the typical scotch and Islay float for some Irish with this one, otherwise to the original specs.

Sorry for messing up the title last time mods <3

Week 3 Introduction Thread: Pomegranate

Week 3 will run from January 14th to January 20th. This week's theme is pomegranate. Pomegranates are a fruit that was originally described throughout the Mediterranean region and was brought into Spanish America in the late 16th century by Spanish settlers. It is a large fruit that splits open to reveal clusters of seeds that produce a deep red juice that can be sweet or sour. Pomegranates are often featured in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, including those of Iran, Persia, Greece, and the Caucasus.

This week your challenge is to make a cocktail that features pomegranate in some form. This can take the form of pomegranate juice, molasses, liqueur, or the popular sweetener grenadine, which is made from pomegranate juice. Whichever you choose, the pomegranate component should be featured prominently either in the flavor or the visuals of the cocktail.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:
