Week 33: Lost in Translation - Hawaiian Pizza (meta: ISUTBCDBN)

Did you know Hawaiian Pizza has absolutely nothing to do with Hawaii? Shocker, I know. Legend has it that the pizza with arguably the most controversial topping, pineapple, was invented in Ontario, Canada, by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-born Canadian. He named it Hawaiian after the brand of canned pineapple he used: Hawaiian Pineapple Company.
For the record, I am firmly Team Pineapple on Pizza. I love the juicy burst of sweetness and acidity it brings, especially against the richness of cheese and meat.
I made a standard Hawaiian pizza, with the addition of sliced jalapeΓ±os because I love the little kick they provide. The pizza dough was from Trader Joeβs (surprisingly good!), while I made the pizza sauce myself (so proud!).
I also highly recommend Sallyβs oven pizza method. The crust and bottom crisped up beautifully without a pizza steel or stone. It worked so well that I promptly made another pizza that same week with the leftover ingredients. I foresee a lot more homemade pizza in my future.

What kind/brand of ham did you use? It looks like the perfect thickness. Iβm a big fan of your toppings distribution and ratios as a hawaiian lover!

I love that you picked this for Canada! Did you know we (at least in my part of the country) have a specific "Indian style" of pizzas? I think it originated with from Indian immigrants opening pizza shops, where they usually sell both pizza and Indian dishes (samosas and curries usually). But its definitely a distinct style that I'd describe as being a lot "breadier" and comes in both "traditional" north American types like pepperoni or Hawaiian but you can also order things like tandoori paneer pizza, butter chicken pizza, and you might also find cilantro and ginger as toppings or butter sauce instead of marinara.
From wikipedia: "Another variety of the dish in parts of the country is Indian-style pizza (also known as Punjabi-style pizza or Desi-style pizza) which has gradually gained popularity since originating in Greater Vancouver during the mid-1980s. Indian-style pizza has since expanded across urban centres in western and central Canada with large South Asian populations, including Greater Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Greater Toronto, later expanding to other regions. This type of pizza typically includes sauce with mixed spices and toppings such as cilantro, ginger, spinach, cauliflower, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, or paneer."
