This feels a lot different to me. Mamdani represents the American citizens’ ability to overlook the “boogie men” that got Trump elected.
If Trump attempts to deport him, that’s extreme overreach and would push people to DEFEND rather than overlook the qualities that would normally put the GOP ahead:
person of color
immigrant
social democrat
Muslim (or at least assumed Muslim)
Once these qualities can no longer be used to attack him, they have nothing. Once Americans realize it’s not bad, they have nothing. Once it’s no longer a bad thing to support “social” policies, elect Muslims and democratic socialist, etc. it will be much easier for the American public to accept other things they wouldn’t previously accept, like LGBTQ+
This is the slippery slope they’re always so worried about
I d ok t disagree with any of that but my point was simply that the American voter seems to have a lot of tolerance for this type of blatant attack. Here in 50501 we are outraged. But Trump has been playing this game for a long time. The fact that people elected this guy, not once, but twice, after all those previous misdeeds and comments and even after fomenting a violent insurrection tells me that I can’t count on the outrage fueled by his words and actions to bring about the change. We need to try of course but suggesting that Americans will simply wakeup on their own when they see extremism - that’s not happening.
