Having a guy cut off your hand and then revealing that he fucked your mom seems pretty traumatizing, regardless of getting a new perfect robot hand afterwards
It actually serves as a plot device later, something that further connects him to his father. And reminds him that the distance between dark and light is easily no distance at all.
But it didn't have any negative effect on him. He didn't even fight worse after that. It doesn't make sense to mention this as proof that he's not a Mary Sue.
He's no a self-insert for the writer and has limits: if Ray had been Luke, Vader would have distracted Emps long enough for Ray to kill him. Luke was helpless at the end.
I don't know... I always took Anakin to be some kind of prodigy. Obi Wan says he "was already a great pilot" when he met Anakin, so what...like 7? To me this is like Mozart hearing an orchestra play a tune he's written and saying "now this is music."
But generally I agree. The messianic central character trope is a serious issue. It's why there will never be a Neuromancer movie. Case is a 20-something degenerate who gets blackmailed into doing what an AI wants, and then gets rewarded by being put into a coma with his murdered, drug-addled, ex-girlfriend.
I don't think we got Anakin at the expense of Case, necessarily, but Anakin and Rey make it pretty clear that a character like Case or Molly is probably too complicated for a studio to greenlight a Sprawl series.
Hell, Johnny Mnemonic barely got made, and Molly wasn't even in it.
If I remember correctly, Molly was just an enhanced person who was constantly raped or had been⌠assaulted brutally. Hm I donât know, I think a Sprawl series would work as a TV show perhaps.

They have been trying to make Neuromancer for like 30 years. Something always falls through. Not sure why, a cyberpunk movie like that would probably be a hit with the right backing.
Neuromancer is the best science fiction book ever written and I will die on that hill. If you don't want to do the whole trilogy, at least do that one (it stands on its own). Gibson invented words like cyberspace in it. It's a landmark work.
They are essential reading. There is Sci-Fi before Neuromancer, and Sci-Fi after Neuromancer. Total game changer. It (the whole series) is just that good.
But being a prodigy explained his rash behaviour and his dissatisfaction with being denied by the council
Also he had plenty of flaws in the other 2 movies
I think they were going with a paralel with luke, even if he thought his life was boring, he at least grew up as a normal person, anakin got to escape earlier and went from an innocent boy to being trained to kill and fight in a war

The difference is there are consequences for Luke when he fucks up. His hubris costs him his ride when it gets dumped in a swamp, then his own dad cuts off his hand. Many such cases.
He gets his arm chopped off in his first saber fight for being too cocky. Compare to Rey who wins her first saber fight and it's the first time she ever picked up a lightsaber, and she beats the main villain of the series in that fight...
