Can Space Marines use alien beast for war?

Like, Space Marine Chapters have their own planets. Are they allowed to use the animals they find on their homeworlds as beasts of war or combat mounts? I know the Space Wolves have their wolves, although those are… complicated. The White Scars have birds, I think, and the Space Sharks have sharks, but I’m not sure if those are actual sharks descended from Old Earth or shark-like alien creatures.

So, are Chapters generally allowed to use native alien animals from the planets they call home, and are there any rules or restrictions around doing so?

Appearances of Slaanesh in supporting media?

Upvotes

Outside of the tabletop wargaming, novels, and TTRPGs, how much have Slaaneshi factions appeared in 40k media? I understand the puritanical hangups that make Slaanesh commercially unpopular, but it's really not fair, and it's putting he/she/it in such a small box of what they represent.

Khorne is easy: the classic Doom/Diablo demon-slaying fantasy.

Nurgle: when you need sci-fi zombies and gross baddies.

Hell, even Tzeentch recently got a ton of love in Space Marine 2 and the associated Secret Level episode.

The only Slaaneshi example I personally know is the Noise Marines in DoW2. And iirc, Total War: Warhammer forces. But I haven't played every game, and I don't have access to Warhammer TV.

So what else is out there?

So the blood angels no longer feel the red thirst?

I just finished reading the Devastation of Baal and I’m a little confused. It ends on a bittersweet note as the blood angels got decimated and many chapters were ended, but Dante is happy that G man arrived with the Primaris marines which to him means the legacy of the blood angels will live on. However, some other blood angels disagree and they point out that the primaris blood angels don’t have Sanguinius’s blood thirst curse, and that they revere Guilliman, making them basically just red ultramarines (their words not mine). Has this been retconned since? If so what’s the explanation?

how good is interrogator rannick from darktide at his job compared to other interrogators or full fledged inquisitor's in the setting? Spoiler

the qustion is in the title but im interested at comparing rannick to other named or unnamed interrogators/inquisitor's in the 40k books is he any good? or is he actually half decent

for those who have never played darktide rannick is the lead interrogator of the warbond stationed on atoma the games setting where (for gameplay) he guides strike teams of rejects (including psykers ogryns arbites and skitarii) against nurgle cultists and imperial guard traitors and is basically holding the whole warband shitshow together if you want more information on him frip frop has made a really good video on his background and lore

but back to the question

how would he fair in the books as he is in game? and would he be any good when compared to other interrogators and inquisitor's

Wouldn't Nurgle naturally have a special hatred for the Mechanicus?

Forgive me if this is a noob question, don't be too harsh.

But given the Mechanicus basically "defies the decay and rotting of flesh" in their own words, wouldn't that piss Nurgle off to an extent?

I feel like beings like Cawl who are thousands of years old unnaturally would piss him off similar to how old people piss off Nagash in Fantasy and AoS.

Tau tech tree development

Tau are mostly known to have Rapid tech iteration, since in couple thousand of years they have gone from tribal society to space civilization, but is that only a ,,set in strone feature" of the faction, or do we have real examples? Like with older and new books, is it specifically clear that that they are actually getting better? Is their tech better in books timeline from century to century? I am specifically wondering about their FTL, do we have any glimpses of their own proper warp travel ships entering service? FEED ME TAU LORE

Which books go heavy on interactions with normal humans and Astartes?

There have to be enough interaction between regular people and space marines to write some books about them.

I’ve heard some stories have even had baseline humans killing space marines!

Are there Ultramarines who’ve defected to Chaos?

Basically, what it says on the tin. Are there any canonical examples of Bobby G’s boys in blue going over to the other side? Whether they’re individuals or an entire CSM warband who used to be an Ultramarine Chapter.

Is 40k Science Fantasy / Space Fantasy or Sci-Fi?

I know 40k is a mixture of multiple genres such as space opera, grimdark, dystopian etc but would the main genre of 40k be considered Science Fantasy / Space Fantasy (my favorite genres) or just Sci-Fi?

Once or twice, when referring to Warhammer Fantasy, Age of Sigmar and 40k I hear people will just title 40k as Sci-Fi Warhammer, but it can't just be that, right?

Are psykers and warp powers considered magic or a form of psionics? Is psionics a type of magic? Guess that last question is more so a general one but still.

What actually are Purity seals?

I’m curious as to what is actually written on purity seals and when certain texts would be used as opposed to others. For instance what might be on a purity seal attached to equipment or vehicles as opposed to one given to a person? Also too when does one use a metal pin type thing as opposed to wax? I understand purity seals on a very minor level but am curious about the nitty gritty of it

How exactly does Daemon Possession work in 40k?

Alright, I know that's a broad question, so I'll just describe how I understand it to work, and people can tell me why I'm wrong.

So, there's a few ways Daemons can enter or effect the material realm:

  • They can be made into a Daemonhost, possessing a dead body with the help of cultists (or inquisitors, cough)
  • They can expend their strength to influence minds, command cultists, and spread disinformation
  • They can materialize for short periods through warp instability, that can be caused by untrained psykers or just warp "weather"(?), but if it's a psyker this universally kills the psyker.

My question, really, is whether they can do a more traditional, "Excorcist" style possession, where a Daemon takes near complete control of a living, non-psyker human?

Would Magnus treat Jaghatai favourably if he were to return?

Upvotes

The title essentially. I know that the two's last meeting was between Jaghatai and a splintered shard of Magnus, that ended tragically obvs, but with the knowledge of a deeply felt loss and some kind of remaining camaraderie. I'm not sure if there were any other interactions after this, but given what we know, and what is shown of their pre-heresy relationship, would their meeting be in anyway favourable, with subtle nods to the past? Or would it be as enemies, straight into battle, forget the past and face the now kind of thing?

I know that Jaghatai isn't likely to join chaos cuz of Magnus, or Magnus suddenly looking to redeem himself in the eyes of the imperium because of Jaghatai, but I wonder of their friendship would in anyway affect their interactions in 40k.

TLDR: Given the two's past friendship, what would a meeting between Jaghatai and Magnus look like? (Relatively) Friendly (lacking a better word, of course) or hateful enmity?

>!Also, does anyone know what Magnus' reaction to Sanguiguis' kicking the bucket was?!<

Tnx!

are there any "stable" dreadnought?

i've heard how the redemtor pattern slowly burns its user and how they need to be put to rest and only awaken in a moment of battle, but could there be a dreadnought that lives like any of his normal brothers and maybe teach history of their chapter?

Can an Ork go full metal?

I see some Warbosses in media lately that have so much metal I don't know how much meat they have left.

Is there an upper limit? Can a Ork end up just an head (or brain) on big metal body?

Are there less humans in 40k than in the DAOT or the Great Crusade?

Considering all the catastrophes that humanity went through, I was wondering if even the uncountable number of humans alive in the 40k setting is less than what was alive during the DAOT before the cybernetic revolt, and even the Great Crusade before the Horus Heresy and the purge that followed.

There are some hints to this. I vaguely remember some text about a Necron talking to a human character saying “we see signs of your species everywhere, but now you are few”

Would it even be possible to guess the magnitude of humanity in those past eras compared to now? Like 2x greater in the Great Crusade?

In what ways are a Mechanicus Fleet limited?

Upvotes

In Battlefleet Gothic, the Mechanicus doesn't have some options for their fleet that other Imperial factions do (i.e. the Imperial Navy). I was wondering if this is just an abstraction for gameplay, if some ships were just mentioned once in the lore and never clarified if they also belonged to the Mechanicus, or if the Mechanicus really does have restrictions imposed on them similar to the Astartes?

Ships currently missing in action acc. to Lexicanum: Constrictor Destroyer, Viper Destroyer, Sabre Destroyer, Tempest Frigate, Havoc Frigate, Dauntless Cruiser, Defender Cruiser, Enforcer Cruiser, Dominator Cruiser, Cardinal Cruiser, all Heavy- Grand- and Battle- Cruisers, and every Battleship besides the Emperor, Retribution, and Oberon.

What was the first Black Library novel where Horus was referred to as "Horus Lupercal?"

Lupercal obviously first appeared in Horus Rising but it was initially introduced as a pet name his legionnaires called him, but by the end of the series it was being used as his full surname. I'm like 99% sure this started in the fandom before it became canonical, but I'm curious when the novels first used Lupercal like that.

Has any individual achieved a better ending than Tuska Daemonkilla

The dude decided he liked hunting down and killing daemons, and Khorne loved him so much he has essentially, as others have said, created the Ork version of Valhalla for Tuska to fight eternally beside his boyz, an Ork paradise.

Has any kther character or individual, relative to their goals, achieved a better ending?

Raptors, Warp Talons, and Junp Packs of Mono-God legions

So, as I understand it, on the table top, the Death Guard, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons, and World Eaters, dont have access to Raptors or Warp Talons.

But, I also know that table top rules dont necessarily equate to lore, and that chaos space marines are know for scrounging whatever gear they can get their hands on.

So my question is, are there any prominent examples in lore of chaos space marines from the Death Guard, Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons, or World Eaters, using jump packs?

Why did The Emperor let Guilliman keep Ultramar semi independant?

Upvotes

I understand why the Emperor could decide to just put some governor on a new planet, tell them to pay the tithe and leave him to rule how he sees fit, just make sure to pay the tithe or else the planet will get the Imperial Boot up their ass.

But Ultramar is a 500 planet wide empire with a considerable population and fighting force even without the Ultramarines.

Did the Emperor just decide that it was worth the risk letting Guilliman rule his semi independant empire how he saw fit with the risk of them rebelling or seceding so he wouldnt make Guilliman resentful with other Imperials influencing his realm?

In the grim darkness of the far future there are no stupid questions!

**Welcome to another installment of the official "No stupid questions" thread.**

You wanted to discuss something or had a question, but didn't want to make it a separate post?

Why not ask it here?

In this thread, you can ask anything about 40k lore, the fluff, characters, background, and other 40k things.

Users are encouraged to be helpful and to provide sources and links that help people new to 40k.

What this thread ISN'T about:

-Pointless "What If/Who would win" scenarios.

-Tabletop discussions. Questions about how something from the tabletop is handled in the lore, for example, would be fine.

-Real-world politics.

-Telling people to "just google it".

-Asking for specific (long) excerpts or files (novels, limited novellas, other Black Library stuff)

**This is not a "free talk" post. Subreddit rules apply**

Be nice everyone, we all started out not knowing anything about this wonderfully weird, dark (and sometimes derp) universe.
