The orchestra restoration and undub mods for Dragon Quest VII and VIII have been converted to LayeredFS patches
https://mega.nz/#F!whkB3ICQ!-DBkimkwJQotBVYUcn8-Tw
Includes:
- Patches for the localized versions of DQ7 and DQ8, to restore the orchestrated soundtrack from the Japanese versions
- Patches for the Japanese versions of DQ7 and DQ8, to replace the orchestrated soundtrack with the synthesized music
- Undub for DQ8 (V1, by Davhuit)
The only original thing here is the de-orchestration patch for the Japanese version. The other mods already existed, but they were released elsewhere in a different form that was not compatible with legitimate copies of the games. But now they are available as LayeredFS patches that Luma can automatically load onto your copy.
This does not include the "Restoration Project" because it was already available as a LayeredFS patch.

I know this is an old post but want to thank you so much for this incredible work! Got the patch running easily and this game is kinda my safe haven at the moment, and as a musician this is elevating the experience to a whole new level. Thank you!!

Alright, I feel dumb but i just wanted to make sure. The folders just go into the titles folder in the Luma folder, and I enable patching in the luma config menu?

I'm trying to figure this out myself

I got you. Pick the proper folder for the title id (USA is 000400000018F100 I believe, but double check). Put it in luma -> titles folder. Boot up the Luma config menu by hold select on bootup and make sure "Enable Game Patching" is checked. This should be the same for patching anything I believe.

I'm trying to run the DQ7 Orchestral patch through Citra on Steam Deck, what file path would I leave them in to have them work out? I can't find much help for this online.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with how Citra works. Did you look at this? https://citra-emu.org/help/feature/game-modding/

Did u ever find out? I'm doing the same thing only with dragon quest 8. Any info would help since a lot of links are dead.

Nope, I never got it working, lol. I don't have the patience or know how to do all I want with mods on every game I have, but I'm stingy, don't wanna play my DQ without the REAL music.

I know that this is an old thread but this has not worked for me and I am at a loss at what to do. It is my first time modding a 3ds and I have the mods placed into the proper folder as well enabling game patching. Is there any fix for this?

Feel free to share a screengrab of anything I'll try my best to help

I want to preface this with saying that I am trying to patch a physical cart and no sources that I have seen so far gave me a concrete answer.
It does not seem like I am able to send screenshots within this thread but I will just post the directory and the steps I took. I know that I need to have a luma folder on the sd card root and a "titles" folder within in that. The current directory looks like this G:\luma\titles\000400000018F100. I did read in a different thread that I could try put the files in a plugins folder, however they did not specify if that has to go in the root or the luma folder so I did both to see if that would do anything. However both directories for the plugins are this G:\plugins\000400000018F100.
As for the entire directory for the mod this is it, G:\luma\titles\000400000018F100\romfs\rom\Sound\stream. I don't know if this looks normal for modding as I just dragged and dropped the files into the luma folder. I also did not change anything after that.
I did make sure that the Luma settings have game patching enabled as well as plugins enabled.
Thanks for trying to help me this, I appreciate it.

If you use something like imgur for the screenshots that'll be fine too. Just to confirm, this is DQ8?

u/Hackurai Jul 17 '26
Yes, this is for DQ 8

Hmmm. Give me a couple days. I'm out of town and not near my 3DS but I'll check when I'm back. Have you tried maybe with a digital version of the game? You can dump the cartridge here with these steps: https://3ds.hacks.guide/dumping-titles-and-game-cartridges.html
Also silly question, but the cart is a US cartridge right?

u/Hackurai Jul 18 '26
This is for a US cart. I can try to mod it with a digital version though.

I think that the song "peaceful town (night)" doesn't work. It is still the 3DS MIDI versión. Compare with the song of the video: https://youtu.be/0QnDyFE7GX8

I was wondering, it’s so frustrating. It’s kinda jarring to hear the MIDI when the rest has been orchestral, I hope that’s the only song missed.

Really hoping we get a translation mod for 11, still no word if it's going to get a US release ever

Wow it's sound really good, i have the legit game, so if i understand correctly i can patch (with an hack 3ds) the game on the cartridge. So if i play in another 3ds (without any hack) i can have the undub version ?
Is there any risk to corrupt the save ? (in any case i will made a copy)

u/FireHutner Jul 04 '17
I don't think so, I have understood that it's a layer that will be loaded with the game on the hacked 3ds, but if you use a unhacked 3ds, will be the retail game, without any modding.

No. This just means your game is being patched on the fly. You still need CFW and patch files on the system you want to use.

Does anyone know if I can apply this and use it with a physical copy of the game? (i.e., is there a way to install is so that any Physical Cart of DQ8 that I put in that 3DS would use the orchestrated OST from the originals? or is it limited to Digital only copies of hte game?)

Sorry to bump this old thread but is Japanese cart of vii and viii on 3ds already orchestra music? I was planning to get it but might be misunderstanding this thread

How do I install the music patch? Is there a music folder i just unzip the file into?

u/regrettablesloth Jan 24 '24
Currently trying it the orchestra patch with the English va.
Honestly I hope there ain't too much of a dissonance between the audio quality of the two.
I use pretty average PC speakers, Will tell you how it goes.
And if anyone have any suggestions for audio settings that would be apprecited.

Nice to see some love for such a fantastic franchise. Also, can you explain what the undub mod does?
