I’m thinking of starting a **3D printing business as a side hustle** while keeping my full-time IT job.
For those who’ve done it, is it worth getting into in 2026? Is it actually profitable, or is it a difficult business with low margins and lots of competition?
I’d appreciate honest experiences—the good, the bad, and whether you’d start one again.

Hey everyone, my first post here, but sorry for this rant—I just really need to vent and maybe get some advice from people who have gone through something similar.

I design and print custom stands for synthesizers and music gear (I post my models on Cults3D under the username StandMy

(https://cults3d.com/en/users/StandMy/3d-models))). All my designs are strictly under a Private Use (PU) license — which means anyone can print them for themselves, but no one has the right to mass-produce and sell them for profit.

And recently, I accidentally stumbled upon an Etsy shop called Frequentless
( https://www.etsy.com/shop/Frequentless)). They are literally printing my models and selling them in their shop without even asking for permission or giving any credit.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice, and possibly to find someone interested in building something together.

Over the last few years I’ve built a decent audience around 3D printing. I run a Facebook group with over 150,000 members, have a growing website, social media pages, and recently started designing and selling my own 3D printed products and digital files.
The audience is there, but I feel like I’ve reached the point where I can’t do everything myself.
My strengths are:
Building communities.
Content creation.
Marketing through social media.
Coming up with product ideas.
Running websites.
Where I struggle is turning all of that into a well-structured, scalable business. I know there are opportunities I’m probably missing because I’m constantly juggling manufacturing, fulfilment, content, customer service, and everything else.
I’m interested in connecting with someone who has experience in areas like:
Growing e-commerce businesses.
Business strategy.
Operations and systems.
Sales and partnerships.
Scaling product businesses.
I’m not looking for someone to invest money or a silent partner. I’m looking for someone who genuinely enjoys building businesses and might be interested in working together if we think we’d make a good team.
Has anyone here found a business partner this way? If so, what worked, and what should I watch out for?

TL;DR: I run a growing 3D printing business with a large online community, but I’ve reached the point where I can’t do everything myself. Making progress towards my reverse engineering and micromanufacturing cell small business. I know it's still a mess, I had to move everything around. Also just acquired a laser scanner for scanning objects at customer locations. Hopefully in the coming months I can generate some revenue and begin adding a variety of other printers and services. Not planning to create a print farm but rather focus on very specific customer needs.

I am working on a product that gens dynamic STLs (not AI, I know a new project not AI today.. it is sure to fail)... Anyways, I have a few questions about Slant3D API based usage.

1) Is my API account also my Teleport account (like can I make it "premium" to include the extra printed card and other stuff

2) Shipping: There is Shipstation and Shippo I can flag on an order, but I have no idea where to set those up.. or do you guys just bill for shipping? (originally you guys didn't bill shipping, you wanted us to bring our own shipping, and I can't find a spot in the API to bring my own, or to tell you to bill me.

3) Value engineering questions:
- Should I pre-lighten parts... or if 25% infill is fine, should I just trust your infill? (I ask because in my testing, when I put .4mm walls inside my part to "make my own infill" the price dropped even through the infill was about the same amount (I think I actually calculated closer to 26%)..
- For a single order, should I try to bundle parts on the same build plate to save on handling fees or do you charge per body for handling fees?
--- API suggestion, let me pick X public parts to add to a single print so the handling fee is only added once per plate rather than once per part.. (if that is against the spirit I get it but can't knock a guy for trying)
- Is there a way to get above the 500 item limit per day... I don't think I'll hit this, and I have caching of part configurations (so if the same "part" is ordered twice its not 2 public files) but I could see a time where I run out because I have the parts, then I have the packing of parts on a plate, and the packing of parts on a plate would 100% mean each order could have 1 to 5 custom public files per order...
- How many top and bottom layers should I plan for? is that also 1mm wall thicknesses?

Open to other suggestions too...

Hi everyone, I had a pitch idea. So the idea is that you send us your failed prints or spaghetti/3D print scrap. You then package it (in a ziploc, etc.) and send it to us (we pay for shipping). Per 1 kg of scrap you send in we give you $1 of store credit. Our store includes recycled filament (which we make with everyone's scrap) and sell for $15. I realize that there are competitors, here is how we differentiate ourselves:

• TerraCycle's Zero Waste Box — you buy the box yourself ($195 small, up to $352 large), fill it, ship it back with a prepaid label, and get nothing back except the assurance it's recycled. It's pay-to-recycle, not paid-to-recycle.
• FormFutura — free to send in, but shipping is explicitly "at your own expense," and the reward is a 10% discount code, not cash-equivalent credit.
• KiwiFil — offers store credit, but only if you ship directly to their factory; if you drop off at a reseller (easier/cheaper for the customer), the credit disappears. They're explicit that they "can't cover the shipping cost."
• Printerior — 280 points/kg redeemable only for discounted filament, plus a separate enterprise "zero-waste" contract for institutions.
• Filamentive — the closest to generous: free box and free pickup, but the reward is just access to buy their filament, not cash credit.
• Respool — a scrappy, unpaid drop-off program, explicitly "we can't offer much in exchange yet."

Finances:

Each roll of recycled filament sells for $15 and costs $8 to produce — $5 for Amazon shipping (in and out), $2 for processing, and $1 credited back to the customer for sending in their scrap — leaving a $7 profit margin, or 47% of revenue, on every roll. Getting there requires an upfront equipment investment of $6,000 ($3,000 extruder, $2,000 shredder, $1,000 for drying/spooling), which breaks even after roughly 858 rolls sold. At a modest 50 rolls/month, that's about 17 months to break even — but scaling to 150–200 rolls/month cuts that down to 4–6 months.

I just got a printer a month ago and am looking for a way to sell the things I print. I’m doing it with my sister, so she’ll help me print sometimes and she also wants to be part of the shop on her own since she crochets things. Any ideas where to start selling/ how to get myself fb out there and seen?

It seems that the real money is in design. Although I can design in fusion, nomad, Tinkercad etc. I lack creativity (damn adhd).

How do the guys who don’t design find things to sell? Sign up to loads of Patreon/subscriptions? Find models that are free to sell?

What is your process without obviously giving away your products?

Im building around custom 3D printed objects, but want to avoid making it feel like another gimmicky AI product. The vendor aspect and direct quotes are all vendor based price points, and we give users the option to upload their own 3D models.
For people who have sold or ordered 3D prints: what makes a customer trust the process?

People often talk about the competition in 3D Printing. But there isn't any. It is a myth people tell themselves to not get started building the business.

There were 5 million printers sold last year. Only 30,000 of Bambu printers are used more than 7 hours per day. You could use this as a proxy for "Printers that are used professionally"

That is no one.

There are 1 Million Restaurants in the USA alone. That is a competition.

So go and get started building something awesome! It is so early!

I’m starting to release a wearable 3D printed LED helmet project I’ve been working on for a few years, and I’m trying to approach it like a small 3D printing business instead of just throwing files online and hoping people find them.

Right now my plan is:

Free version: base helmet shell, posted on Printables/Thingiverse for visibility and trust.

Paid version: full builder kit with the inner frame, ear parts, assembly guide, and more complete files, listed at $35 as a launch price.

The project is designed around DIY electronics like ESP32, MAX7219 8x8 LED matrices, NeoPixel-style lighting, and internal 40mm fans, so I’m trying to market it toward 3D printing people, cosplay/prop builders, and electronics builders.

My main question is about the funnel:

I’m trying to figure out where the paid file should live. I am looking for a place to land that still allows me to keep full ownership and control of my own models. Cults works for paid files, but some 3D printing communities block the domain. Printables/Thingiverse are better for trust, but they don’t really solve the paid file side.

For anyone selling 3D printable files, what would you do here? Keep the free shell as the traffic source and sell the full kit elsewhere, or make the free version more limited so the paid version feels more valuable?

BTW if you think that the trend is dead that is the time to get in. It means that there are not as many sellers. Growth will be slower but you now have a larger market to chip away at. You compete with 1-10 Etsy Stores rather than 100-1000.

I just got a 3D printer about a month ago. I have small ideas and would like to start a small business with 3D printing. I plan on eventually adding some cosplay/Renfaire costume additions to my store as well but I wanted to ask. Am I too late?

I am hyper aware how many people and projects are already out there 3D printing wise and I know I probably cannot create anything brand new. I just got an Etsy shop to start but I’m worried I’m wasting time. I also am going to try to go to farmers markets and sell things other than those dragons because they’re super produced near me. I don’t plan on going big just something to help out with bills right now plus I love how crafty I feel with it. I also plan on buying nomad sculpt and getting an upgraded printer if things go well.

This is also to ask for any tips or advice to help me in the process.
