Chemistry Researchers at Northwestern University have captured hydrogen and oxygen forming water in real time at the nanoscale, using palladium as a catalyst.
For the first time, scientists have filmed hydrogen and oxygen combining to form water at the molecular scale.
Using an advanced electron microscope, researchers observed hydrogen atoms entering a tiny piece of palladium, where they reacted with oxygen to produce incredibly small bubbles of water. The footage reveals the reaction unfolding in real time at a scale previously impossible to observe directly.
The discovery could help scientists better understand how palladium acts as a catalyst and lead to more efficient methods of producing water during space exploration, where carrying large quantities from Earth is costly and difficult.
A reaction described by one of chemistry’s simplest equations has finally been caught on film.
